Barca 2, L.A. Galaxy 1, a.k.a. “Paaaaayyydroooo!”

By: Kevin | August 2nd, 2009

Pedro! is ready. Even if the rest of the squad isn’t. Buried on the official site in a recent post, along with birthday wishes for He Who Is No Longer Pedrito, was the news that he had been promoted to the A team.

And man, is he ready.

We saw glimpses of what was possible for him last year, the way he raised hell against Fiorentina, and entered matches with a bundle of energy. But this is a new level of Pedro! Hell, if he keeps on playing like that, he might even acquire an extra exclamation point.

Our boys rolled into the Rose Bowl, in front of a crowd of almost 94,000, to take on the Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS, a club that I like think of as the Los Angeles Becks, Lannie and some other dudes.

That we won 2-1 wasn’t a surprise. It should have been more, but it’s pre-season, a time for sharing. And caring. And learning. It’s about getting in shape, not getting hurt and learning to play together at a match-winning level. They get an A for that. We kept the ball, and took it from the Galaxy when they had it, and showed it to us at all. Nice.

Guardiola first rolled out with: Pinto, Alves, Marquez, Muniesa, Maxwell, Keita, The Yaya, Dos Santos, Messi, Pedro! and Krkic. And Messi was rocking the captain’s armband, which was really cool to see.

This is a very different pre-season than last. Players are coming off injuries, Confed Cup duty and various holidays. They aren’t as sharp, and Guardiola has some kids to examine closely. And I think that he likes what he sees.

More importantly, he seems to like what he is seeing out of the club, and he should. There is great energy out there, even if it’s pre-season, so the passes are a little short, and that telepathic bond that existed at the end of last season isn’t there yet. But it isn’t supposed to be, and I’d be worried if it was. Can’t peak too early.

It was really a match of two halves. The first gave us a glimpse of a Xavi and Iniesta-less world, and I didn’t like it. We had some midfield control thanks to The Yaya, but he was moving a bit more gingerly after taking a very hard foul that should have gotten the offending player a yellow. We nabbed a scrappy goal thanks to Pedro!, who did a little dance, made a little move and blasted a shot that the keeper deflected but didn’t control. He and Messi were dancing around like hummingbirds in the box, before Pedro! finally got the rebound that put it away.

But the best part about that first goal was that it was the kids who worked the mojo. Dos Santos felt his side of the pitch getting a little crowded, so he laces a lovely cross-pitch ball that reset the offense, before Muniesa stroked the pass that turned Pedro! loose.

Remember that Gudjohnsen pass to Pedro! that everyone wall calling me harsh for labelling a pass that any professional should be able to make? Muniesa’s was better. And it demonstrated precisely what I mean, because unlike the Gudjohnsen pass that had acres of space for both passer and receiver, Muniesa’s pass was quick, precisely weighted and exactly where it needed to be to make sure that Pedro! was the only one with access.

Yes, we conceded, as Lannie showed his Greg Louganis style after a play by Adriano, who had just come on for Marquez. The replay showed that he dove, and a ref used to that sort of thing wouldn’t have called it. But he did. Beckham converted the free kick from close in, a hell of a shot, really, that caught Pinto a little flat-footed, and it was 1-1.

The second half was Xavi Time. You kind of forget how spectacular our midfield maestro is, how essential he is to our ball control attack. He kind of did a lullabye thing with the ball, that Jedi Mind Trick thing he does where he sashays about, all “I’m not going anywhere with this round thing at my feet,” before he kills you. In this case, he laced a ball to Busquets, who slotted in a perfect pass for Jeffren, who buried it.

Now, for impressions of folks who stood out, or are worthy of mention:

Pedro!: As I said above, he’s ready for regular time with the first team. His control, pace, movement and cutting ability remind me of one diminutive Argy Bargy.

Muniesa: I love this kid. He’s calm, with great positional sense and passing ability. He looked up, saw Pedro! on the move and dropped a perfect ball for him. Guardiola plucked him up at the end of last season, and now we see why. We also see why Caceres is expendable. He’s already better than the Uruguayan, and he’s only 17! I’d say I have a crush on him, but the IMBLA (International Man/Boy Love Assn.) would start spamming me.

Maxwell: Um. Wow. He had a king-sized hoseoff that allowed not one, not two, not three but four Galaxy players to crash the box with header chances. But his pace with and without the ball, passing ability and attacking skill were evident. You could see a lineup with The Yaya and Keita holding down the middle, with Maxwell and Alves raising hell on left and right. Easily. I reallyreallyreallyreally liked what I saw. Abidal looked nervous when he came in.

Marquez: Man, how I missed those passes out of the back that he does so well. In particular, that ball to Keita who seemed stunned that it got to him. I thought it was going to be the second goal, for sure. He moved very well, to boot, particularly laterally, which you always like to see after a knee injury.

Keita: He’s not in season form yet, but you can see how his emergence could make Gudjohnsen expendable. He does a lot of what Monument does, only with greater quickness and athleticism.

Dos Santos: What a passer, with a great sense of the field. Hang on to this kid, who has the knack for keeping the ball moving. He knows when to get fancy (pop lob for Alves), and when to just work the ball, a la his interactions with Messi and Alves on the right side. And his amazing pass for Krkic should have been another goal, but The Kid was unusually craptastic.

Xavi: Beauty, serenity and a sense of joy….bring a Xavi home today, for only 100.000.000 Euros. :D

Busquets: Calmer and more assured. Great pass to Jeffren, that he probably doesn’t make last year, or tries something too fancy, or too late.

Jeffren: If he keeps going at this rate, he’ll be promoted, as well. Should have had two goals. He’s fast, aggressive and fearless, with a quick shot. He’s almost ready.

Fontas: Tell me again why we’re trying to buy defenders? By the time our current crop are done, we will have Adriano, who will be playing up to his real name by then, Botia, Pique, Muniesa and Fontas. Let’s hear it for the farm! Yes, he dwelled on the ball a bit too long and got it stolen by Beckham, but he will learn. Probably already has.

Gudjohnsen: In his defense, he isn’t a forward. But dude, at LEAST stay onside! Horrifying. I kept thinking of my “bear with the car keys” analogy. His sloppy ball-handling that led to a Galaxy jailbreak was shameful. I will give him love if he stays, when he plays well. But I don’t think that even his most ardent fans can find anything good to say about his showing. Hope nobody from West Ham was watching….

Finally, my only real issue with this match, and it’s a danger of engaging lesser clubs in friendlies, is that a few players take things way too seriously. The below image is of a foul that made Henry say to the fouler, “Knock that shit off, junior.” The guy is going in, studs up, at the ball but more importantly, at Henry’s foot/ankle. It’s a friendly, jackass. The cop is looking like “If he hurts Henry, I’m going to shoot that sonofabitch.” I would have beat him to it.

Pep had this to say about Bojan:

“He’s got great movement coming inside. He does some great diagonal runs and if the ball comes to him in the box it’s half a goal”. These abilities mean he can play in a number of positions up front and Guardiola agreed “he’s got a good chance” of playing a big part this season.

I agree Kxevin, if Xavi gets injured, we should worry a lot. He is one of a kind and he commands the team like nobody. But there is a little guy called Iniesta … Iniesta-Keita – Iniesta-Yaya – Iniesta-whoever is close to fine.

I was thinking about keirrison or another top-striker to come in when ibra is out, I don’t trust titi or bojan very much, but it is only a matter of opinions. IN PEP WE TRUST.

my internet access is limited, so i may not be posting frequently, but i have it now. worth highlighting for those who didn’t think that Zlatan would be up for putting in the workrate:

“I want to get rid of this plaster. I want to go out there on the pitch and train with my team-mates, touch the ball, laugh with them…. With Guardiola I’m speaking Italian, he speaks it perfectly. He already gave me the first instructions about where he wants me to play, they will have to tie me down if they don’t want me to start training.”

great attitude. let’s hope he keeps it up.

and yeah Kxevin i think he someone put the ball in as it was on the endline. which, no, doesn’t make physical sense. but the guy is a genius, so who knows. the run leading up to it, and his first goal, were also great in that he found so much space for himself and took the goals so well.

I would certainly trust Henry at center more than Krkic. Henry is battle-tested in the Premiership. And let’s not forget his foray at the center vs Valencia at home didn’t turn out too badly, right? :D

yes henry is supposed to be a natural born 9, and he should do fine in that position. I just think that a team like FCB can afford to have two 9’s, two real 9’s. Henry and Bojan are 9’s ok… but they are with us to play in different positions I think, they are wings that “in case of emergency” can play as central striker. Doing that in some games is cool but not in too many games succesively, I think. I wanted keirrison to stay… btw… will bojan play as 9 in la copa or sub-minor games like last year? he HAS to find his position already! ;)

Bojan is an interesting case. He’s a bit like Eto’o in the sense that when you put him out on the wings you don’t get nearly as much out of him as if he plays in the middle.

But I don’t see him getting many chances to play in the middle except maybe in lesser Cups.

Keirrison staying would have been a bad option. He is not ready to play for a big club like Barça and has to develop his game more. All the pundits who watch Brazilian football say the same things, including Vickery and he eats and breathes Brazilian football. Loaning him out was the best choice.

I think Henry will be fine if he has to play their during some games. Bojan, I’m not too sure.

Like you said, Kevin, I bet their is a host of scouts and teams who saw our youngsters in the last 3 matches and are probably trying to figure out ways to get a hold of em. I wouldn’t be surprised if Muniesa, Fontas, JDS, and Jeffren have a trillion loan offers. It would be dumb to try for a transfer. I know Pedro already does.

Keirrison will do OK in Benfica. I am especially hoping that Pablito Aimar re-finds his old Valencia form. He is similar to Ronny in that he is just 29 but people already have given him up for dead. One of my favorite players when healthy and it is really sad to have seen him lose such a chunk of his prime to injury. If he can re-find himself, Keirrison will get some really high quality service which is what I am hoping for.

I’m in love with him lol. Nah, I just reference him when it comes to Keirrison, because people seem to think that Keirrison can slot into the 1st team automatically. That is not why he was bought and Pep has said as much.

once again hernane’s agent comes out and says his value is 13-14mil.
not bad considering 30mil for mascherano or 20+mil for chrgrinskiy
…his agent also said his dream is to play for milan, but i bet that could change if barca comes knocking on the door, then again, so would the price of hernanes

jnice, Keirrison isn’t ready for a Barca starting role yet, but could he be any worse than Guddy up front?

Henry & Bojan left wing & Iniesta when needed
Messi & Pedro right wing & Jeffren when needed
Ibra only for the centre… & Bojan & Henry when needed

Keirrison would get some games and I think that is why some people think that he should get a place in the squad. I still think that getting a rotation with Oscar Cardozo in Benfica is a better idea.

The Hernanes option is still not a bad one. The problem would be Sao Paulo’s valuation.
He has the tactical awareness, the long-range shooting and the long and short passing to fit in to our triangles and play switching.

Yeah, Keirrison at this stage of his development needs playing time. Its the best thing for both parties although I can’t help but think that if Zlatan stays healthy and gives us a good 4 years or so then Keirrison won’t be a starter during the remainder of his contract. This of course assumes that Zlatan will be the success we want him to be but stil…

I absolutely love Hernanes. For that money, snap him up. The problem is that either he gets really disappointed with playing time or Keita, Busi, dos Santos, and Thiago are rarely gonna start because he really is that good. If Milan sells Pirlo, they would be absolute fools not to consider Hernanes for that price.

Keirrison probably wouldn’t be any worse than Guddy up front, but if Bojan barely gets games, how much time will Keirrison get?

Not saying that he will be a starter every match for Benfica, but he surely will get more minutes than he would have had at Barça. Why not let him get a feel for Europe, develop his game, get some Europa Cup experience, then come back to us a better player?

@ BA. You come off as extremely arrogant with your comments about how you would beat us 8-1 e.t.c… first of all, that was a foul, i don’t get how you all keep saying it wasn’t fair..

As for that last picture in the opening post, his name is dema kovalenko and he has been doing dangerous shit like that his entire career. He has ended two players careers with some nasty tackles. He doesnt represent our team as a whole though and its not like your team wasnt commiting any bad tackles…the tackle against donovan for the free kick comes to mind.

Rose, the tackle against Donovan for the free kick wasn’t a bad tackle. It was a foul, sure. But you can’t compare trying to get the ball to that dude Kovalenko aka fake ass Gatusso. I’m pretty sure I read “get the fuck outta here” coming from his lips, I didn’t see that from Henrique. But if that was a foul, then surely the tackle 20 seconds before that on Jonathan dos Santos was a foul and that’s why Yaya was so irate. Good game, though.

Rose, I think that the slo-mo showed that it was more Donovan making the most out of contact than a legitimately hard foul. We’re fans, but we admit when our lads have the hatchet out. Puyol, for example, wasn’t taking any guff.

I think you all were playing very tight and physical, and much tidier in the second half. I can’t see an 8-1, but even Arena said lucky that this match was in August and not November.

Thanks for the visit, and that English cat you all have is a hell of a player.
