Barcelona – Celtic: Champions League Second Leg!

By: Isaiah | March 3rd, 2008

Updated version
It’s the second leg of the Champions League first round knockout stage and we’ve got a decided advantage going in. We’re up 3-2 already and we’re at home. That’s fantastic. It’s hard not to be extremely confident in a team with such an advantage, so I’m just going to go ahead and be that cocky prick everyone hates: we’re going to win this.

Celtic are good, make no mistake about it, but we’re better. At home, in front of our crowd, we’re going to have a nice night of attacking football. Celtic will be forced to press forward if they want any sort of chance and that will undoubtedly open them up to swift and merciless counterattacks. Because we’re at such an advantage, we’ll be able to sit back and soak up a bit of pressure, grab control of the ball, and use our superior midfield to stretch their already thin defense. As long as Toure plays well in the middle, we’ll be golden. I don’t expect two straight bad games from Milito and Puyol, especially since I don’t think Celtic can pick up Kun Aguero on a quick one-game loan. If they could, they would.

Here are the various scorelines that would allow us through to the next round:

1. Any win, be it 1-0 or 10-0.
2. Any draw of any scoreline.
3. A loss of 0-1 or 1-2. A 2-3 score would put us into extra time. The team cannot lose by 2 or more or we’re out.

The fear would be that the team comes out flat, knowing it is already so far ahead that it can actually lose the game and still advance. This might allow Celtic to step in and grab an early goal, which would both energize them and give us some jitters that could even allow Celtic to grab another goal. That would be unacceptable, naturally.

Here’s the squad list for tomorrow: Pinto, Valdés, Zambrotta, Puyol, MilitoEdmilson, Thuram, Sylvinho, Abidal, Touré Yaya, Xavi, Iniesta, Deco, Gudjohnsen, Henry, Bojan, Messi, Eto’o, Ronaldinho.

Expect Messi to start, even if Rijkaard is taking a belligerent stance about his decision to put Leo on the bench for the first 60 minutes of the Atleti match, saying “We’ve lost when Messi was on the pitch, too.” Which is true, but misses the point, which is that a healthy Lionel Messi should never, ever, ever be on the bench. Unless he personally requests to be taken off. Via the page that should permanently be at his disposal. Yeah.

Another thing: start Toure. Just do it. Edmilson should no longer play. With Marquez still out (yikes), it’s Toure all day all night in the middle, with perhaps a replacement for Puyol or Milito by Thuram sometime during the second half. Word from the trainer’s office is that Milito is going to miss out through sickness, meaning Thuram will get the start alongside Puyol. Interestingly, both players are right sided players, so we’ll see who had to switch to the left and how that affects their ability to mark Venegoor of Hesselink. With Zambrotta on the field, we should be able to control their dangerous left side a little better than we were with Puyol, a man who will no doubt be on the warpath thanks to his performance against Atleti on Saturday.

I apologize for the quick post, but I’ve got to run off to the Kansas game now. I’ll attempt to update it with more information tomorrow before 1pm. We won 109-51, which is just disgusting. For any neutral who watch, I apologize even though I loved every second of it. A word of warning: I will be somewhat out of commission during March Madness, though I plan on watching the Barca game as long as it doesn’t conflict with Kansas. I will probably not come up with either a preview or a review of the Valladolid home match, so if you’d like to try your hand at blogging, please send me an email and let me know you’d like to. All I ask is that you be smart, funny, a Harvard PhD, and conversational in Swahili. Being a Barcelona fan would be a positive too.

Bittersweet as possible, no? Every other team I wanted to win (Sevilla, Lyon, Milan) gets eliminated and my team, Barca, gets through… with a terrible injury.

    Again, :(

Messi OUT for six weeks. Do you reckon Messi could be a new marketable icon?

    Dummies or pacifiers?

    Nappies or diapers?

    re:messi
they wont know how long he’ll be out until tomorrow, when the medical team does tests. so i dont know how Marca, or anyone else, could know. however, its true, an injury of this type usually means 4-6 weeks out. but it depends on how bad it is. hold your breath and remember how quickly puyol returned, lets hope its the same turnaround for our boy.

@areallaticfromthesouth. if you were 20 years old and had been injured as many times as Messi, you would cry too, out of sheer frustration. so, getouttahere, we dont wanna hear it.

Why? Why now? Please let this be a quick recovery! Pray… pray real hard tonight, okay!

And areallaticfromthesouth, PISS OFF! Messi has more class and respect than someone of your intelligence will ever comprehend. He deserves our respect and concern, not your classless bullshit!

@areallaticfromthesouth: Fuck off. He is not crying because of the pain he is crying bcoz he knows he will out of action for at least a month…such a crucial time for his team and he cant be there to help them out..thats how much he loves football, and his team.

areallaticfromthesouth, you are a fucking idiot. he is 20, and just had a major blow to the best season of his career. he is one of the best players in the world, so show some respect you piece of shit. this is apparently the same injury as 2 seasons ago, when he missed us winning the champions league, so obviously he is going to be distraught over that.

Is it me, or do you’ll too feel that Roonie and Henry’s Ego gets the better of them, when they are on the field..They somehow just don’t connect..

JC, I don’t think it’s ego…I think Eto had a really bad game last nite, but the opposite applies towards Ronnie, I think he had a phenomenal game and is proving to getting back to his old fabulous Ronnie.
Ego, However might be applying to Eto because of the confidense Rikkard has in him…I think he is starting to believe he can screw up and Rikkard will always depend on him.
By the way, who cares about all of this??? What matters now is messi is injured and u can kiss CL goodbye if the draw happened to be against a toufh team like Manchester.
The league is undetermined yet but a win is always a must until the end of the season…But, last nite with messi out u could tell our offense was infertile and not effective. We just became great in holding the ball but never translated opportunities in real threats.
magic is needed without messi for us to pull through

Is it me, or is Ronaldinho ever so slightly gaining a little form? He has been flashy, smiling, and showing some strength and speed in the past few games. He has posted up for the ball and actually held off defenders in the past two games. That’s something he hasn’t done in two years. He’s made some nice moves towards goal against defenders, and his perfect pass to Sylvinho yesterday deserves a nod.

One can only hope that a great player like Ronnie will rediscover the beautiful game. It sucks to watch someone as brilliant as he play up to his potential. I hold that he has been off his form since before the World Cup because of over-playing. He burned out. He was worn out. He has been in terrible shape two years. He hasn’t been quick, strong or focused. He trips over the ball. He doesn’t have any confidence and so he isn’t moving forward with natural, instinctive genius the way only he could just two years ago.

I recently heard it commented that great players only get a few years atop the world and then it’s all downhill from there. Let’s hope not. And if the last couple of games are any indication, maybe Ronnie can make it back to the top!

Word from Barca medical team regarding Messi:

Six Weeks. Should be available around April 15…

Which means he’ll miss a slew of Liga games, the Champions League quarterfinals, and the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals (vs. Valencia).

If Barcelona make it to the Copa del Rey final, it would likely be the first game Messi would be eligible to play.

    That’s what they’re saying.

Che Bob, I think Ronnie is absolutely returning to form. He has shown moments of his brilliant old self ever since his return. Here’s a question, who do you credit for his return to from? Obviously you must credit Ronnie himself, but who else? Do you think Rijkaard played a hand in motivating him or was it the players, that is, the ones starting in his place? Maybe it was the critics in the media? Just curious how you all feel. Regardless it’s great to see him back and with our Messiah out for 6 weeks we’ll need Ronnie to shine like never before if we are to have a chance.

I don’t think it’s over yet. I’ve read some comments that say we’re screwed without Messi, but I disagree. Don’t get me wrong, Messi is by far my favorite player in the world, but this is a team loaded with super-star talent. I think the offensive game fell apart yesterday because they were upset about his injury. I think they will regroup and focus on being stronger and more determined. This is where coaching plays an important role in motivating the team. Rijkaard faces his biggest test yet. If he can pull this off, he very well may be in Barcelona another year. If not, well, you all know the answer to that.

One more thing, do you believe in women’s intuition? I’m kind of afraid to say this, but twice in the last week my gut instinct has proven correct. For some reason I didn’t want to watch the Athelitco game, I just felt like we were going to be humiliated. After Ronnie’s amazing goal, I thought, “good this was all just in your head”. Well, you all know what happened after that. And then yesterday before the game I had the overwhelming feeling that Messi was going to get hurt. I held my breath every time he touched the ball, until the 35th minute. I couldn’t believe it. Since the game wasn’t live you guys can’t blame me for negative energy. Either way, I’m a little freaked out by the whole thing.

    Jenny, I got your number…it’s 867-5309, right?

I agree with the big J. Messi is amazing and it hurts, but it doesnt mean the season is over.

When Messi got hurt in December, we promptly lost to Real Madrid. I would say though, that it was a poor showing by us, and one of RM’s best, plus a wonder goal by The Beast (were his eyes open?), that resulted in the 1-0 loss.

Other than that, we didnt lose any games with Messi out. We got through the eliminatoria against Sevilla without him (granted, on away goals). Sevilla was one of the teams I was most worried about facing in the next round of the CL.

The first game that Messi started when he got back was against Bilbao. We tied that game 1-1 and didnt look all that amazing.

I just think there are lots of factors, and while Messi makes us better, we still might be good enough to get through these 6 weeks. Lets hope that Ruud’s knock and Ramos’ two-game ban trip them up a bit, too.

Now, did anyone watch the two legs of Arsenal and AC Milan? Arsenal look pretty tough to me. They possess the ball very well. I’d like to avoid them. The Schalke-Porto winnner looks like the weakest bet, followed by Olympiakos (if they get through) and maybe Fenerbache (at least, in name — they actually look pretty good). Is the draw this friday or next?

The draw is on the 14th. I agree with ballbeav, any of the afore mentioned teams would be a blessing to draw. But at this stage it could be anyone’s game.

@ joe. true, that is the downside to real madrid’s loss. they have only the liga to focus on. but, sometimes teams slump domestically after going out of the CL. it can go either way. they really exerted themselves today, ending with only 10 men and running a ton. i can see them losing at the weekend, emotionally drained.

What to do? What to do? What to Do?
With the Messiah out injured who should take his place and more importantly when?
Examining the different options we all will have our favourites but certainly Yaya Toure will not get rested again for a while and Xavi will be guaranteed a starting place in midfield, which isn’t a bad thing considering he is our best striker at the moment.
The easy choice is to play Ronnie/Henry/Eto’o. On paper it wins hands-down, however their interplay is iffy and Eto’o is much better through the centre and neither of the others like the right. I would probably rotate Ronnie and Henry in to the side and maybe play some second halves with them together.
Of the two younsters Bojan usually get the nod at home and this trend will probably continue if they are starting. He is not where I would like him to be physically but he is certainly on his way to being one of the best strikers in the world (even if I think he would be best suited to a two man striker force).
I wouldn’t mind having Giovani in the team if it were on the left we were short but he is more like to drift in and out of the game from the right. He also shoots like he gets points for shooting more.
Iniesta is probably the best starter of the four. If he starts he can break down more resolute defenses from further up the pitch. He hasn’t been in the best form of late but seems to have moved 10yards further back as Xavi bombs into the box.
The one downside to this would be that we have more cover up front than we do in midfield. We would just have Xavi Deco and Eidur for the two slots, and Deco isn’t ever far from suspensions.
    Choices, choices, choices

Ciaran brought up a good point of playing Iniesta in a more attacking role. Put him over in Messi’s normal spot, but maybe a tiny bit farther back. If Deco stops sucking and can start being more solid in the midfield, i think this is a brilliant idea. Iniesta can create real problems, and i liked when he played there before.

At this point in the season we should not be putting the responsibility of winning cups on the shoulders of 17 and 18 year olds.

Well,at least one of my prayers was answered today. The Evil ones are out of the CL, now let’s hope this messes with their psyche. It probably won’t, but we can hope!

Ciaran, I assume all your scenarios are based on a 4-3-3, is that correct? Given the circumstances, I think I’d like to see a 4-4-2, with Abidal(Sylvinho), Milito, Puyol, and Zambrotta in the back. In the midfield play Yaya, Ronnie, Iniesta(Deco), and Xavi. Then in the two striking positions rotate Eto’o, Henry, Bojan, and possibly Dos Santos. I really don’t see Rijkaard being this bold and I know it’s still a little weak on the right, but I think Xavi and Zambrotta are the best bet. Especially if Eto’o or Bojan play the right, leaving the left for Henry or Dos Santos.

I’m with you JC. I wouldn’t be looking forward to playing them, especially on their current run of form.

A 4-4-2 would be a good option, and I think Eto-o and Henry up front. Henry plays so much better as a striker than a winger, and he has said in the past that he prefers to play with another striker by his side. The only problem with that is that Ronnie has changed so much from when he used to be a midfielder, and now he is more of a winger. We could always try to get him back to his roots, but as you said, Rijkaard won’t be that bold.

I think that Madrid will have some sort of a drastic game. I’m really not sure if they will play good or bad, but it will definately be an extreme (if you know what I’m trying to say.) They will either be so emotionally drained that they will play horrendously, or they will realise that the league is their only chance of silverware, and will destroy the opposition.

Did anyone else see Manuel Neuer in the Schalke match? He’s definately one to watch. Made some amazing saves, including two of the penalties.

Hooray …Real Madrid are out, what a match! I think they played like shit and Roma is definetly one of the candidates for the Champion’s league title winners.
Let’s just hope that we meet an average team such as Shalke, but not Man or Roma or Arsenal. This way I feel we will have a real shot in winning the CL. Passing the 8th round succesfully and then having messi back…I just can’t going to anyone else when messi is back.
Regarding the league I got faith that we will catch up to real even without messi cause we will have merely tough games except for villareal. On the other hand, real are having 3 tough games and I c them losing points especially after their confidence is down after the CL match
