Barcelona - Racing Santander: Sunday 3pm EST
By: Isaiah | January 19th, 2008It’s another match at the Camp Nou, the third in a row, and the hope is that Barcelona can take advantage of Real Madrid visiting the Calderon — assuming that RM slips up, of course. Racing comes calling on Sunday at 3pm EST, broadcast on GolTV as per usual. The big news, of course, is the return of Messi from injury. His return is bigger than it otherwise would be due to Samuel Eto’o joining Cameroon for the African Cup of Nations…African Nations Cup…(can’t they just figure out one name?) and Ronaldinho’s continued absence through injury.
Another bit of news is the addition of Jose Manuel Pinto to the roster. In case you aren’t aware, Pinto comes over from Celta Vigo on loan until the end of the season with an options to buy before May 31. It’s an interesting deal, I think, as the newspapers/rags are reporting that the deal cost 500,000 euros (how many billions of dollars is that?) but that the “option to buy” would be for a free transfer. Who is Pinto, though? He’s 32, a native of Cadiz, and a product of Real Betis’ youth system. With the exception of one game for Real Betis, Pinto has played his entire career at Celta Vigo. He won the Ricardo Zamora Trophy (Pichichi for goalies) for the 2005-06 season — interestingly enough that was the last year Barca won the league — allowing just 28 goals in 36 matches (0.78 goals per game).
Enough about Pinto, who has been included in the squad for the game. Here’s the rest of the squad:
Valdés, Pinto, Oleguer, Zambrotta, Puyol, Milito, Thuram, Abidal, Sylvinho, Xavi, Márquez, Deco, Gudjohnsen, Iniesta, Messi, Giovani, Henry, Bojan
Oleguer is back in the lineup, which I’m sure makes us all sigh with relief. I’m surprised I didn’t mention it earlier in the post…And now that that information is out of the way, we can look at the options available for starting lineups. There are two major decisions to be made at this moment: 1) does Messi play? and 2) is the Copa more important than the league? My answers to those two questions are: 1) yes, but only for 20 minutes and 2) no.
I’d like to see a full strength squad out there, unlike what appeared against Murcia, despite the success achieved. That lineup was Valdes, Zambrotta, Puyol, Thuram, Sylvinho, Marquez, Xavi, Eto’o, Gudjohnsen, Henry, Bojan. Replacing Sylvinho with Abidal seems like the way to go with the back line, naturally, leaving Marquez as the holding midfielder where he’s played very well. Stability in the back line will aid the counterattacks as well as the general spread of the offense. I would suggest this starting lineup:
Valdes, Zambrotta, Puyol, Thuram, Abidal, Marquez, Xavi, Iniesta, Gudjohnsen, Henry, Bojan.
My reasoning is fairly simple: win the game early and then adjust to give Messi some playing time. I realize that this puts Deco and Gio Dos Santos on the bench, but with Gio playing fairly terribly recently and Deco failing to prove he is fully fit I don’t mind that at all. Give Gudjohnsen the opportunity to play the role he seems to thrive in, behind two strikers and with the ball at his feet. Deco provides more mobility and is far superior to Guddie on his day, but Guddie has been putting fairly complete performances together while Deco has been injured.
I also would like to see Iniesta in the starting lineup, providing some of the balls to the front line. I can completely understand putting Deco in for Guddie, but I don’t think Deco can provide the defensive presence. Plus, you can always bring Deco in during the second half (as well as Gio and Messi). I want to attack Racing and I want to do it early, not be patient in the buildup and score in the 70th minute. I also don’t want to be in a situation where Messi has to come in and “save” the team, but Henry and Bojan have been playing well enough together that I don’t think that’ll be a problem. Rijkaard has claimed he’ll be sparing with Messi, but who knows what that’ll mean.
I don’t know how much Frankie will listen to me, but I prefer to get 3 points here and struggle against Villarreal than to lose more ground to RM and win the first leg of a Copa del Rey quarterfinal. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Copa and I want to win it very badly, but the league comes first. That’s just that, to me.
Some of this comes down to the opponent, obviously. Racing is not a bad club, by any means. Hearing their name conjures up visions of 3 or 4-0 thrashings, but this is a team that is 6th in the league — a European team — and isn’t going to be joking around. According to the comments in a previous post, Racing’s coach, Marcelino, claims that their Copa match is more important and that he’ll make the appropriate changes. I don’t know who they’ll start on the bench, so I’ll just look at them statistically and assume they’ll revert to form regardless of who is playing.
They are 9W-5D-5L overall, but 3W-3D-4L on the road. They go from a sterling defense at home (4 goals allowed, tied for best), to 15 goals allowed away. They score in equal measures in either place (11 at home and 9 away to be exact), so the difference is almost entirely defensive. Barcelona is devastating at home, with a record of 6W-0D-1L, scoring 26 goals (tied best) and allowing 5 (2nd). That’s pretty damning for Racing, but they are on a small winning streak, with 2 wins in a row (1 league, 1 Copa), including an 0-2 away victory at Osasuna. But Barcelona is no Osasuna — the other away victories were Almeria and Depor, meaning 2 of those victories are at relegation zone teams — and will not fold over, regardless of who starts.
My official prediction: 2-0 Barca. If Madrid stumbles, we’ll be there to take advantage. I think we can do this. I know it’s NFL Championship weekend and I know the Barca game starts at the same time as the AFC championship game, but come on people, put your laptops next to the TVs and do double duty! We could be right back in this league race with this game. That is, of course, assuming that GolTV works on TVU Player…which it doesn’t seem to be for the Sevilla game at this very moment…dammit.

Should be an easy one. As I posted in another entry, Racing has its full focus on the Copa, and won’t be taking this match all that seriously.
On another note, make sure your GolTV is working. Mine isn’t. Just a black screen. Comcast knows, and has logged “dozens” (according to the telephone person) of calls. I’ve got TVU all set up for tomorrow, just in case.

Possibility that I’ll be moving to the other side of the world next month. What is the best way to watch Barca from Oz??? I dont even know in Australia are there channels that would show it or what? This is just odd.
Back to Racing… I hope Garay doesn’t have a particularly good game. Good player though, seems a possible long-term replacement for Marquez, not just yet though. Marcelino is a very good manager, and they are a solid team. If we score early its all over but I dont want it to get to halftime at 0-0.
Poor Ronald Koeman, Valencia lost again, 3-0 to Villareal. And I thought (6months ago) that he was a possible target at some stage if Rijkaard jumped ship. We all make mistakesPosted from

Hey Kevin, good news about GOlTV! On your TVU Player channel list GOLTV is channel “65217 Football”. I have had the same problem as you but this channel is GolTV and it works for me. Hope it works for you also. Vamos Barca!!!!!!

GolTV returnted last night. Whew! Don’t know what happened, but watching TV on a computer, even a nice one, kinda sucks. I found the GolTV channel on TVU. Picture isn’t bad, either, as long as you don’t try to go full-size.

Jay, thanks so much for the channel name. I actually couldn’t find it (cerebral deficiencies? I don’t know) so now I can watch the game! Woohoo!
Visca el Barca!

NO problem. Its not the same without GolTV on TVU Player. Although the stream is a little choppy here and there. Hopefully we can pull a win out. Atletico couldnt help us out

Jake, not too sure yet. Its a work thing so nothing is confirmed yet. Its a bit of a jump from Ireland to Australia with only a couple of weeks notice. Should be cool though. Im just happy that I can still watch Barca in relative comfort

Jay, I had trouble throughout the entire first half and most of the second half, then the stream cleared up and was fine for the last 20 or so minutes.
From what I could tell, we played like ass. I mean, what the hell was that starting lineup? Messi’s appearance changed a lot, I think, and it’ll be great to have him out there from start to finish against Villarreal.
More later, when I have a chance to digest everything and the NFL stops…

Couldn’t have said it better myself, Isaiah. Like ass, indeed. And boring, dare I say. Atletico rolled over like dogs for the Evil Empire. That very early goal seemed to take the stuffing out of them.
We dwelled on the ball too long, making it easy for Racing’s defenders. Does Dos Santos even know how to pass, or is shooting his only mental option when he has the ball? He really has become Ronaldinho lite, only without the passes and free kick capability, but adding diving. Ugh.
Henry’s goal celebration was kinda perplexing. Garbage goal, garbage win, but we’ll take ‘em both. The key is not to lose ground at this point.
And a brief NFL note: It was as cold where I am in Chicago (-4 degrees F) as it was in Green Bay for the NFC Championship. I can’t imagine playing American football the way those guys were dressed. I’d have been wearing a North Face parka over my pads.

Yeah Henry’s latest celebrations could be better, couldn’t they? Messi’s appearance showed how much we miss him. He can change the game in an instant. With the hype about Gio and Bojan being so young, I keep forgetting that Leo is only 20. That is crazy for a 20 year old to be the best player in La Liga and arguably the world (2nd best, officially).
Gio pissed me off that game. He was incredibly selfish. Bojan on the other hand showed that he was 10 times more mature than his age would make it seem.
I am so happy to be seeing alot more Henry. Sure it was a scrappy goal, but his positional play during that game was phenomenal. With Samu gone, and Ronnie not in his prime, he needs to step up, and I think he’s doing it.

Dont really mind Henry’s celebration, so long as we see more of them. I would also love if Bojan went on a scoring run like he has the capability to do.
Also I think that Giovani should be given more of a chance. He’s 18 for god sake. Its his first season with the first team and he’s been thrown in head first. Messi’s first season he only played a handful of games from the bench. I dont think its fair to compare Giovani in his first season to Messi.
Giovani is playing in a team without confidence and that are not in a good run. Messi came through with Ronnie, Etoo and Deco as the best players in the world. As soon as he can learn from a Messi who is fully fit and the best player in the world then we can start to judge. He’ll learnPosted from

Okay, so seeing Messi enter onto the pitch, and watching how the game almost instantly changed: was frightening. I’d almost forgotten just how scary that kid is.

I know that it’s wrong of me to expect Dos Santos to show some humility and try to fit in, as Krkic is doing. But this is the third match where he’s been selfish, taking shots that have no way in hell of even getting past defenders, much less troubling the keeper. It’s like he still has memories of that goal he scored in the Gamper Trophy match against Inter (a humdinger, to be sure), and spends all his time trying to replicate that.
Henry is leading by example. He’s passing, getting back on defense, doing everything he can to make everyone around him better. When he does that loping, fading thing that he does, it’s deliberately to draw defenders so that he can make the pass.
Dos Santos, no matter how many times he sees it, doesn’t learn. It was insufferable enough with Ronaldinho dribbling into three defenders. Now we have the kid doing it? Ay, yi, yi….
But, unless Casillas becomes human, none of this is going to matter. He can’t stay that good the entire season, can he? I still think there are a lot of points out there, and the Evil Empire is going to drop some. Hopefully, we can capitalize when they do. I’m already planning on the three points in May, when we win at the Bernabeu, so we just need to find four points between now and then.
Hopefully, once we get everyone back (healthy, I hope), we can get back to dominating. I think that Eto’o/Henry thing will be a regular fixture, and with Messi raising heck, and Deco back on form, it will be great. I’m not counting on Ronaldinho doing anything except playing for his next contract.

Cameroon got spanked by Egypt. (Yay!) I know they’ll still qualify for the later rounds, but wouldn’t it be nice if we got Eto’o back early?

Kevin, Eto’o also scored twice and is now tied for 2nd all time in scoring at the African Nations Cup (12). I’m sure he’ll break the record (13) soon.
Let’s hope he returns fit and on form

Heck yeah! The way he grabs the ball after each goal cracks me up. Unfortunately, the way Cote D’Ivoire is going, we won’t be seeing Yaya for a while.

Oh, and as someone sage once said, there are lies, damned lies, and AS.
1. Ronaldinho to Inter or AC. (Ronnie might go, but it won’t be to Italy. He’s not that washed up yet.)
2. Drogba here for big bucks and Eto’o. (Too absurd to even comment on.)
Not in AS, Rijkaard said that he is very happy with Ronaldinho. This last one is funniest of all, and probably the biggest lie of the batch.
