Brazil v Argentina in Olympic footy, a.k.a. The Granddaddy of Them All (until El Clasico, that is)

By: Kevin | August 18th, 2008

Okay, we have some down time before we put Wisla to the sword on the 27th, and what better way to spend it than cheering for a homeboy, the Argy Bargy, the Fleet Fireplug, the Little Midfielder That Could, Lionel Messi.

As we’ve all been witnessing, he’s been tearing it up for Argentina, almost single-handedly getting them over the hump into the semi-finals v Brazil, for what anybody but the most insane wouldn’t dub the “Real Gold Medal Match.” It’s pretty widely believed that the winner here will have an easy time in the final match.

The pundits are probably right. We have lots of rooting interests in this go-round, and because you can’t tell the rooting interests without a scorecard, here ya go:

Lionel Messi: I know. Duh, right? Of course we’re all rooting for him. He’s Barca through and through, a product of our youth system, his career owed to our support of him in a time of need, from coaching to medical care. He is as thorough a Blaugrana as someone who had sprouted, “Jason and the Argonauts” like, from the Camp Nou pitch.

We’re rooting for two things in this match, actually. That our wunderkind not get hurt, and that he rip some shit to shreds, building worldwide fame and glory, and selling lots of Messi No. 10 Barca shirts. Yee-haa!

That last thing is one very cool benefit to his Olympic success. And also, who here hasn’t speculated that Guardiola and the boys breathed a huge sigh of relief that the team continued its dominant play even after the Wee One went to the Olympics. “See? We can play without you. We wouldn’t want to, but we can.”

Ronaldinho: The “Yay!” or “Boo!” for this bloke will depend on one’s view of his culpability for last season’s debacle. Personally, I’m sitting on my hands, but I won’t be exactly disheartened if an Argentine defender puts the boot in. He’s ex-Barca, as the whole world knows, and is said to be playing his way into shape, and will be “better than ever” after the Olympics. Guess he got all his partying out of the way in Barcelona.

Okay, I’ve figured it out now. “Boo!”

Thiago Neves (Brazil): We sort of want him to have the stank for this match, kids. Things have been awfully, awfully quiet on that front. He was on our want list before the Olympics, and I’m betting that he still is. His club, Fluminense, wouldn’t negotiate until after the games. They’re hoping he raises hell and his price skyrockets. So if he has the stank, he stays cheap. He’s definitely talented, and would make a solid Ronaldinho Lite.

So: “Boo!”

Blah, Blah, Hernanes, Blah, Blah: Not only is this talented midfielder rockin’ one of those interminable Brazilian names, but he’s another one of those wish list players. His side, Sao Paulo, took a different tack than Fluminense. They set an insane valuation of a player who is essentially untested in top-flight football. But make no mistake, they too are waiting to see what happens to his value at the Games. So far, I think the price should be going down. Let’s get it down even further with a big, fat, lusty “Booooooo!”

Fernando Gago (Argentina): He plays for that other team that goes by the moniker Evil Empire. So I’m hoping for Chinese carrion birds to swoop down and carry him away, to feed their young.

I can’t see Brazil winning this one, not with our collective (and admittedly a bit negative) rooting interest. You high road folks can just cheer for Argentina because Messi is ours, and he must triumph.

Lord knows what time the match will be shown, as there are still half-naked female asses frolicking on sandy beaches to be shown. Some call it Beach Volleyball. I call it overexposed. On the up side, NBC is all out of Michael Phelps baby pictures, and might actually take an interest in this clash of the titans. Ronaldinho v Messi? What’s not to like.

On the down side, we’ll get some jackassed commentators.

This is why I say make mine Telemundo.

Any thoughts on the General Assembly tomorrow? I really hope Laporta doesn’t get ousted, that would be a big distraction and step backwards considering this pre-season and over all “re-building has stayed pretty positive thus far. It’s the last thing we need.

Well, the Godó media group (EMD, RAC-1 radio, the local station 8TV, among other media) has been reactivating the anti-Laporta campaign these last 3-4 days. But I doubt they’ll get their own way.

Very good basketball final match Esp-USA, although it’s a pity that every time a USA player received the ball while running, he made traveling according to FIBA rules but went unpunished (not only today, but the whole tournament)… Kobe, today, made five steps to score! And those two technical fouls with less tan 30 secs to go because the spanish bench and Ricky Rubio (18 years) protested another unpunished clear traveling…

But, whatever: for those who care, congratulations! And also for those who care, remember that Navarro is back from NBA and staying with Barça for life…

Genis, are there more votes to come? I’m assuming all 3000 members of the General Assembly didn’t show up.

Charlie, only showed up 900+ (those that voted), although the number expected was around 500-600…

Anyway, don’t expect that the influential Godó Media Group will cease hostilities against Laporta, Txiki, Cruyff (and Eto’o). Remember, this group owns:

    - El Mundo Deportivo
    - RAC-1 radio, with 4.5 hours of sports programs each end every day, 90% about Barça, with a lot of opinion-making by el Mundo Deportivo journalists and others like them, and with the biggest audiences in Catalonia.
    - 8TV, seen in half Catalonia, with programs about Barça that follow the lead of those of RAC-1, and,
    - (I forgot before) La Vanguardia, one of the most sold and prestigious dailies in Spain (not just Catalonia).

Why all this grudge against Laporta by this group? Frankly, it’s a real mistery. Of course it has to be related to €€€ and/or politics. But, apart from them, no one knows for sure.

Nope. That’s it, Charlie. Laporta stays. Frankly, the preseason goodness by the lads fixed that wagon. I’m surprised even that many “no” votes were tallied.

And now there’s some madness about us being interested in Di Maria, who has a 30 million buyout clause. Over at Pep’s space people are saying “Yes! Yes!” A few voices are saying the right thing, which is one game does not a career make. Take a chill pill on that one.

Mmmm… Take it easy, Kevin: All those people (and others) I mentioned before are just lying in wait. Everything will depend on the goodness of the season almost match by match. For the time being, it is possible that some of their straw men impugns the assembly because the order of the agenda has been changed, namely, the vote on Laporta.

I don’t know if it’s proof that EE will be good this year or that Valencia will be bad but Madrid beat Valencia 4-2 with 9 players. V.d.Vaart got sent off after a wreckless tackle and V.Nistelrooy also saw red. De La Red scored twice. He’s a good player, regardless of his affiliation.
Not that I’m overly impressed that Real beat Valencia, because Valencia are very average, but I would be happier if we had a little more upfront. I think that we still need another option should Plan A not do the job.

My mistake, Higuain actually got the last one… I just watched the highlights. Valencia are not good. No hope this season to challenge. Very much a 2 horse race. Sevilla may push and Atletico will be better than previous seasons but I can’t see anyone but the usual suspects

I hear you, Ciaran. That was awful. I was full of much hope that Valencia was going to do the business. Ah, well.

Deco is energized by the London air, as well. Two goals in as many games. We’ll see how long that lasts.

Thanks, Genis. Now that they have wrapped him up, maybe we can start negotiating with Arshavin? The only other two (currently) rumoured players are Palacio (who can’t handle the pressure) and Van Persie (who is injury-prone and has no possible chance of coming here), so Arshavin is looking likely. I hope.

Genis, the congratulations should be going to the Spanish team for creating the context for the best international game of all time. They almost pulled it off, and would have if they were just a bit deeper and more committed to defense.

I was struck by the absence of travelling calls too. Though the Spaniards also took advantage eventually. The guy who threw it down over Boozer took at least 3 steps.

You are dead right about the technicals, though. Those were ridiculous.

real cool Meet & greet questionnaire at the Juve Offside page today…I think i will spare the time later in the day too although not a big fan of any of the SerieA teams… while I don’t like copying others ideas..we should do (after acknowledging Alessio of course) something like this here too… too many just names here!

Ursus, the truth is that congratulations should be going to both teams. That long and deep hug between Kobe Bryant & Pau Gasol at the end of the match was an homage to sportsmanship.

And Mat, I second that proposal!

All right, Mat, I’ll get that going right after the review of the Wisla match. That way we’ll have something right before the start of the league season. Thanks for the suggestion.

I missed the USA-Spain game, which is too bad because I would have loved to see it, so I don’t know whether the officiating was terrible, but the Spanish press really has gone a little overboard about the supposed traveling (which is never called anywhere on earth, by the way, and as a basketball fan, it makes me crazy). One thing to remember is that refs are generally consistent in their calls (generally, I said generally!) so it’s up to the teams to adapt to those styles. The US has had to adapt to the FIBA rules, which are wildly different (moving screens, for instance) and yet they still came out on top.

But again, I didn’t see the game, so I don’t know what my opinion would be if I had seen it. The US was far superior to Spain in their first meeting (37 points better), so I’m surprised it was as close as it was. Kudos to Spain, though, for making a game of it.

Sports they should ax from the Olympics:

    Baseball/softball (they did!)
    Soccer
    Basketball

Those already have quadrennial championship tournaments and having them be parts of the Olympics is silly. The following sports are just silly and should get axed for that reason:

    Trampoline
    Synchronized swimming
    Synchronized diving
    All things equestrian
    Shooting (including archery)

    Look at me, pontificating…

So, Lyon is still saying that they are interested in Eto’o. They’re obviously kidding, since his salary structure would destroy Ligue 1. Even if they were willing to toss in Benzema, the salary stuff is still a mess.

Txiki B explains the summer signings and coaching change, as in he wanted a more committed group with more energy. This one’s firmly in the “Duh!” category.

You Capel watchers should know that Del Nido says nobody has contacted him about the left winger, so he doesn’t see anything happening.

And, Isaiah or I will have to work up a welcome post. Pedro and Victor Sanchez have been promoted. They get real numbers and everything. As everyone knows, numbers between 1 and 25 are reserved for first-teamers. There are only four available at this time: 12, 17, 19, 23.

Pedro has impressed. Victor Sanchez hasn’t done much for me, but I trust Guardiola and his “what can brown do for you” technical staff.

Genis, if you watch the NBA, you’ll see traveling taken to a whole new level. I actually thought the US players did a decent job adapting to the international rules and refs, maybe the NBA has ruined me for old school round ball forever.

    Hi Colin,

Yes, you’re right about the different travelling rules. The thing is that this facet of the play is so basic that it is practically hardwired on the brain… So it is very difficult for both sides to adapt to the rules of the other side in this respect. Anyway, that doesn’t mean that the result is the same for both sides: It’s not the same to see a 100+ kg chap coming straight to you without pausing on a counter-attack, that the same guy having to pause a moment in order to bounce the ball… But, hey, in the end both teams were practically NBA teams!
