Hi Colin,

Yes, you're right about the different travelling rules. The thing is that this facet of the play is so basic that it is practically hardwired on the brain... So it is very difficult for both sides to adapt to the rules of the other side in this respect. Anyway, that doesn't mean that the result is the same for both sides: It's not the same to see a 100+ kg chap coming straight to you without pausing on a counter-attack, that the same guy having to pause a moment in order to bounce the ball... But, hey, in the end both teams were practically NBA teams!

Genis, if you watch the NBA, you'll see traveling taken to a whole new level. I actually thought the US players did a decent job adapting to the international rules and refs, maybe the NBA has ruined me for old school round ball forever.

So, Lyon is still saying that they are interested in Eto'o. They're obviously kidding, since his salary structure would destroy Ligue 1. Even if they were willing to toss in Benzema, the salary stuff is still a mess.

Txiki B explains the summer signings and coaching change, as in he wanted a more committed group with more energy. This one's firmly in the "Duh!" category.

You Capel watchers should know that Del Nido says nobody has contacted him about the left winger, so he doesn't see anything happening.

And, Isaiah or I will have to work up a welcome post. Pedro and Victor Sanchez have been promoted. They get real numbers and everything. As everyone knows, numbers between 1 and 25 are reserved for first-teamers. There are only four available at this time: 12, 17, 19, 23.

Pedro has impressed. Victor Sanchez hasn't done much for me, but I trust Guardiola and his "what can brown do for you" technical staff.

All right, Mat, I'll get that going right after the review of the Wisla match. That way we'll have something right before the start of the league season. Thanks for the suggestion.

I missed the USA-Spain game, which is too bad because I would have loved to see it, so I don't know whether the officiating was terrible, but the Spanish press really has gone a little overboard about the supposed traveling (which is never called anywhere on earth, by the way, and as a basketball fan, it makes me crazy). One thing to remember is that refs are generally consistent in their calls (<em>generally</em>, I said generally!) so it's up to the teams to adapt to those styles. The US has had to adapt to the FIBA rules, which are wildly different (moving screens, for instance) and yet they still came out on top.

But again, I didn't see the game, so I don't know what my opinion would be if I had seen it. The US was far superior to Spain in their first meeting (37 points better), so I'm surprised it was as close as it was. Kudos to Spain, though, for making a game of it.

Sports they should ax from the Olympics:

Baseball/softball (they did!)
Soccer
Basketball

Those already have quadrennial championship tournaments and having them be parts of the Olympics is silly. The following sports are just silly and should get axed for that reason:

Trampoline
Synchronized swimming
Synchronized diving
All things equestrian
Shooting (including archery)

Look at me, pontificating...

Ursus, the truth is that congratulations should be going to both teams. That long and deep hug between Kobe Bryant & Pau Gasol at the end of the match was an homage to sportsmanship.

And Mat, I second that proposal!

Genis, the congratulations should be going to the Spanish team for creating the context for the best international game of all time. They almost pulled it off, and would have if they were just a bit deeper and more committed to defense.

I was struck by the absence of travelling calls too. Though the Spaniards also took advantage eventually. The guy who threw it down over Boozer took at least 3 steps.

You are dead right about the technicals, though. Those were ridiculous.

Thanks, Genis. Now that they have wrapped him up, maybe we can start negotiating with Arshavin? The only other two (currently) rumoured players are Palacio (who can't handle the pressure) and Van Persie (who is injury-prone and has no possible chance of coming here), so Arshavin is looking likely. I hope.
