Catalan Torró (Nougat) Brownies: F. C. Barcelona Audi Cup Champs

By: Ade C. | August 11th, 2011

Gearing up to the first leg of the Supercopa this weekend against Real Madrid, with worries about our defence (Busquets and Piqué suffering maybe-injuries at last night’s Italy vs Spain friendly) and with the memory of a not-particularly-great pre-season tour to fail at comforting us, what better than a good memory and even better food to make us feel better?

Our wonderful collaborator, Ishay Govender -of the delicious Food and the Fabulous- brings us a delicious brownie recipe inspired by our win at the Audi Cup and her recent visit to Barcelona and the Camp Nou

I don't know about you, but I feel better already...

I don't know about you, but I feel better already...

Our Barça boys are back, and in fine form too. I’m blocking out the defeat by Man United the other day; we played with a young squad and therefore it barely counts.

Barça played hosts Bayern Munich during the finals of the Audi Cup last week and won with not one but two classy goals from Thiago.

I dedicate these fudgey chocolate Brownies made with macadamia nuts, Spanish cacao, white and dark choc bits and rich, golden soft Catalan nougat that I brought back from our travels to our fabulous and fearsome lads- here’s to a successful season! And to Puyi recovering fully, soon.

(I understand purists will frown at my addition of nuts and other goodies- for me brownies lack the necessary flavour dimension without the comforting crunch of nuts and the melting decadence of choc bits.)

This easy brownie recipe is based on a secret one given to me by my dear friend Adelaida. I’ve amended hers, and so her secret still remains safe.

Crumbly on the outside, lush & dense on the inside...

Ingredients:

3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
200 grams sugar (I used brown)
225 grams of butter, melted
110 grams cocoa powder
2 teaspoons instant coffee, brewed in a splash of hot water. Allow to cool
130 grams flour
1 t baking powder
1/2 t salt
handful raw macadamias, chopped
80 nougat, chopped into little bits
50 g dark chocolate, chopped
50 g white chocolate, chopped (sub last four ingredients as you desire)

Method:

Preheat the oven to 180ºC.
Grease a 20 x 20 cm square baking pan.
Whisk the eggs with the vanilla extract.
In a large bowl, sieve the dry ingredients and mix the remaining ingredients together, except the last four.
Add the eggs and mix well. I had a few undissolved bits but this did not pose a problem.
Add the nuts, chocolate and nougat and mix to distribute.
Pour the batter into the pan.
Bake for 25 min or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Eat warm or leave to cool.

These brownies continue to taste fantastic for days after. You want a nice crumbly outside and a lush, dense inside.

Hey Ishay, did you ever think about opening an online food store?

I would definitely order some of your brilliant meals :)

@JuliusX:disqus : Welcome Cesc? With Cesc, the end of an era is near. I see him as an underperformer, he might disappoint us more than Ibra did. And more importantly, it will probably kill Thiago's career at Barcelona (although he has more talent than Cesc).

Who the hell is Cesc anyway? He won NOTHING with Arsenal. He never won EPL Player of the Season.

I really don't understand the hpye around him, because for me he is average. Plus he's been a wuss when he left for Arsenal, because he feared the competition at Barca. Now he wants to return, as a sort of glory-hunter. He'll have done nicely for himself there, if his plan succeeds!
For me he's a traitor, and If I was in Barcelona, I would "welcome" Cesc with a big "Go back to London, you traitor!" sign...

Funny thing is, for the 40m we could have gotten 2 very good signings, for instance a center back and a further attacker.

Cesc is no better than Thiago. It does not make sense.

One benefit I do see Cesc will bring is a more direct route to the goal. He is a much more vertical player than any in the Barca line-up now. Sure seems like this may push Iniesta more to the left wing though. Personally, I like him better in the midfield.

With Cesc's arrival though, I see the potential for Mascherano to get very impatient this year, unless he is willing to play many matches at centerback. Its going to be a big juggling act for Pep.

One thing seems clear to me, with Sanchez and Cesc this squad is stronger than last year's if the center of defense can hold on.

oh well... winning trophies year after year, does some damages indeed... spoils the fans.

  • riquelme8

gud one,i know where are you aiming at :)

i am a ARG fan,not because they won trophies year after year !! not because they won "one match out of four " played in home soil in COPA . Its not about titles, its passion !!

  • riquelme8

so? am i the only one who is excited about his arrival?

Cesc won nothing with arsenal? i don't know when zubi, rossel and barca
made the minimum transfer requirement to "wining trophies" and "counting"
player of the season awards!! with that team and clown on charge,it
impossible to win anything (more or like ARG NT).

Cesc has the highest number of assists in the past five years.in 09-10
he had 19 assists and 19 goals in just 36 appearances.even though he was
injured and sidelined in the last season,he managed to get 17 assist and
9 goals in 35 appearances in so called the best league.his passing
range is his biggest asset.considering his age and what was xavi was at
that time, cesc surely has an edge.cesc is more like a guardiola type,as a
    player

if u still think he is underrated, then watch it some more time, until u feel some kind love :P

first, let it come out as official
