Champions League preview: Schalke vs Barcelona, Tuesday 4 p.m. CT, ESPN Classic
By: Kevin | March 31st, 2008I know, we don’t get the high-def ESPN2 feed. Ripoff!
It’s April Fool’s Day on this matchday, everyone, but since we’ve already played our cruel trick on Saturday against Betis, t’would be my vast, vast preference if we just rolled into Schalke’s home and got knee deep in that ass.
Here’s the lineup, and you’ll note some very good news here: Valdes, Pinto, Milito, Marquez, Puyol, Xavi, Gudjohnsen, Iniesta, Eto’o, Zambrotta, Henry, Edmilson, Sylvinho, Dos Santos, Thuram, Abidal, Yaya and Krkic.
Yes, Marquez and Milito are back, which is very, very good news. Milito likes to stay home, which should solve some central defensive complexities. He also hews to my “when in doubt, kick it out” strategy of defense in the box. And Marquez….what can we say? He and Puyol seem to have a rapport, and he’s good in the air if we get some set pieces. He probably won’t be at full match fitness yet, however, but just having him and those killer long passes in the house is encouraging. I’m looking for this starting XI:
Valdes, Puyol, Milito, Marquez, Zambrotta, Yaya, Xavi, Iniesta, Eto’o, Henry, Krkic.
That front line was dynamite against Betis, and I expect them to be even better, cuz the boys are gonna be angry.
Why no Abidal? Zambrotta’s physical qualities are more in demand for this tie, I think, and Abidal could use some quality time for contemplation. I also think he’s of more value against Liga sides with his pace, than in CL ties, which are generally tighter.
Still no Ronaldinho, though I am told his nails are just lovely. Still no Deco, either. Bummer, sort of, but sort of not.
Schalke manager Mirko Slomka, referring to us and showing his gift as master of understatement, says “They are having a few problems at the moment.” Uh, yeah. Duh!
Anyone thinking that Schalke is something of a gift needs to be careful. They’re very strong in the air, will press the midfield and are very organized defensively.
And we are having a few problems at the moment.
Eto’o says “No locker room problems.” Rijkaard says “No problems.” Txiki sez “No problems.” We all know what that means, right?
There are problems.
Ronaldinho appears to be on strike. Is he injured, or isn’t he? Dunno. Good question. Some say yes, others say no, but it’s a lame-ass, halfhearted no. Last we heard, he practiced with the squad, went to Valencia for the ill-fated Copa tie, and wanted to play. But wild horses successfully held him back. Maybe battling them, to get onto the pitch resulted in the muscle strain.
Does Rijkaard have the locker room, or doesn’t he? Is Deco really injured?

Superstition all day, Jenny. But I’m thinking that today will be 1-0, good guys. Goal for Henry, who should thrive in the defense that Schalke plays. And Schalke has had great difficulties in scoring goals, not only in Champions League but in Bundesliga, as well (I have to watch something on weekends while waiting for our matches to come on). I think that we’ll be tight today, shape and formation-wise, and that will keep the score down. I expect that you’ll see Iniesta, Krkic, Henry and Eto’o moving up and attacking, along with Xavi, and a more reserved role for everyone else. It worked great that first half against Betis, then they started moving around and look what happened.
Kuranyi will be dangerous, as will Asamoah. But I think our defense will be fire-breathing lions today. Plus we have indeed had the spot in front of Valdes’ net legally declared a parking space. We won’t park the full-size team bus there, but a mini-van will fit rather nicely.
You’re right about our best back line, Isaiah. But in my role as resident crazy man, I have to offer all possibilities. I’m going to milk that 4-2-4 thing for as long as I can.

Isn’t C ronaldo the best person to replace ronaldinho?

Jay, I’m not as worried about Man U as I am a letdown at Camp Nou against Schalke. Man U’s strengths (pardon me for looking ahead) play to ours. Abidal can control Ronaldo, that up the middle stuff to Rooney just ain’t gonna happen with Yaya, Milito and Puyol in the house. We’ll also have Marquez back, which will help a lot. Man U have lost to teams who are aggressive in the box, with strong midfields that negate them being able to play with the ball. That’s us.
United thrive on ball control, but who plays better ball control than we do, when we come out to play?
They do have exceptional team speed, so the counterattack will be a worry. The wild card will be Tevez. If he’s on, I’m worried. They’re going to have their hands full with Roma, though. That isn’t the same side that rolled over at Old Trafford last season, as the Evil Empire found out.
And we should have Messi back for at least one match of the semi-finals. He’s on schedule to come back early.

Oh, and as usual, I’ll be laying low once the match starts. The DVR will be rolling at home, and I’ll watch after my loooong day at work today.

I’m going with 1-1. We can’t expect too much in an away leg. Of course I would *love* to see us bag 3 and allow zero, but that’s not likely to happen, so I’ll keep my expectations in check this time around.
If we return to Spain tied, we’ll be in a good position, if not quite a fantastic one.
I also will be laying low during this game because I watch the replays on ESPN Classic at 5pm here in NY — though today I’ll miss the first few minutes thanks to a meeting that doesn’t get out until 5pm. Thank God I live 15 minutes away.

Ballbeav and Xavi…you gotta love that devotion and optimism! Now optimism is one thing, previewing Man U. is quite another, way too jinxing. I guess I’m too superstitious to think that far ahead. I’ll focus on the game at hand, thank you. You know…take it one day at a time. Maybe cautious is a better word for it. Kxevin, sorry you have to work and to anyone else with their nose to the grindstone today. I’ll be watching, but thanks to Kxevin and Jay’s Man U. forcast I’d better pull out the lucky underwear for this one! hehehe!

Isaiah, why does this blog have such a screwy time on the posts. Is it located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? It’s noon my time, but the post registers at 10am? Last time I checked California was only an hour behind me, maybe it’s set on Alaska’s time. Just wondering?

We all know how much Ronaldo loves to flop. Abidal will have to be very careful not to be clumsy. Especially near the box where Ronaldo can pick Valdes apart from free kicks.

Im going to feel really dumb if we dont beat Schalke.

ESPN is calling Schalke’s lineup today a 5-2-3. That’s a new one to me.
I like Bojan getting Champs league seasoning already. Let’s go Boj and let’s go Barca!

Looking at that replay of the goal, keeper should of held that first shot by Henry. As always we score then just play keep away. Barca has to push forward after scoring.

If Schalke had better strikers then you would have lost that one and say Frank say goodbye to Catalonia. But they were very wasteful of the space you gave them, so you live to fight another day. Due Spain proud and beat ManU for the title!

not a pretty win…we seem to lose some fizz after scoring…

Very average performance. Bojan was lively. First touch by Eto’o wasn’t great. Henry was average but thanks for the assist. Xavi and Iniesta were better and Yaya was more reliable than at the weekend.
I am getting the feeling that we should give Abidal a “rest” at the weekend. The other defenders and Valdes were solid.
I miss Messi. He has the real spark that we still need. He is the real difference maker.
By the way, Man Utd looked like they will comfortably be waiting and right about now I’m hoping Ronaldo gets suspended or somethingPosted from
