Copa del Rey! Copa del Rrrrrreeeeyyyyyyy!!!!

By: Isaiah | February 27th, 2008

Remember this is what happened last time we played a Copa del Rey semifinal at the Camp Nou:

Tot el camp
és un clam
som la gent blaugrana
tant se val d’on venim
si del sud o del nord
ara estem d’acord, estem d’acord
una bandera ens agermana
blaugrana al vent,
un crit valent
tenim un nom,
el sap tothom
BARÇA ! BARÇA ! BAAAARÇA !

Jugadors,
seguidors,
tots units fem força
son molts anys plens d’afanys
son molts gols que hem cridat
i s’ha demostrat, s’ha demostrat
que mai ningú no ens podrà tòrcer
blaugrana al vent,
un crit valent
tenim un nom,
el sap tothom

BARÇA ! BARÇA ! BAAAARÇA !

i didn’t think anyone played terrible (deco was fairly invisible and xavi obviously redeemed himself again), but i attribute most of it to valencia packing the box and great keeping. i do think we tried to pass the ball into the goal a tad too much, but i guess it’s better than jacking 30 yard shots.

i thought toure and eto’o were phenomenal, as was messi and for the most part the back line. zambrotta looked better than he has in a while

Yea it was a fairly good game for us. Just couldnt get the ball in the net. Im a little worried with Milito. Last couple of games hes given the ball up in dangerous spots.

I’m happy with the result, but we still need to score at Valencia. It took us 93 minutes to score one in the Camp Nou…

Marca, merengue rag, is claiming that Eto’o handled the ball right before Xavi scored. Did anyone else see this?

Valencia had a force field around their goal today, too bad for them the automatic time shut off in the 93rd minute. Oh yeah, and then there’s the Xavi thing. I’ll say no more. No actually I will, I thought he defended superbly in the 2nd half and overall played a great game. Henry and Deco were pretty much ineffective. I think the game would have had a different result with Iniesta on the pitch at the start. Overall I think Eto’o, Yaya, Xavi and Abidal were brillant. Not the best result, but it could be worst(and almost was)!

I think we are far more direct with Bojan on the pitch. Why does Rijkaard always leave it until the last 20mins to make any changes? Its one thing to give the starters a chance to play but I think most subs should get most part of half an hour.
I was screaming for Iniesta and Bojan for most of the second half. I think its becoming obvious what our best eleven is Valdes, Zambrotta, Puyol, Milito, Abidal, Xavi, Toure, Iniesta, Messi, Eto’o and Ronnie.
Now I dont think that Ronnie is as good as he was but Henry isn’t good starting on the left and Bojan isn’t a ninety minute man just yet. I’d love to see a real winger on the left, like Mancini, Ronaldo or Quaresma

The only thing that kept Valencia in that match was an amazing keeper, and our offense, that conveniently kept hitting the shots directly at him. If anyone puts a little bit of bend on that first half ball, if Messi decides to lift his shot instead of keeping it on the ground, if, if, if….

Valencia packed the box. I’m sure they’re proud of the way they played. You do what you have to do to get a result. Now all they have to do at the Mestalla is what they did this time: keep everyone behind the ball and hope for a counterattack goal. Clearly, they can’t play with us. Matches such as this one are one of the things that disappoint me about our beautiful game. A team can decide that they aren’t going to play, and that’s that. Ugh.

As has already been said, Yaya was spectacular, and Abidal’s great form continues. Zambrotta’s second-half cross was sublime, and Xavi just continues to force me to subsist on a diet of crow, doesn’t he?

Milito was curiously off today, but Puyol was always, always right there. Deco should have come off before the end of the first half. He’s the kind of player who either has it, or he doesn’t, and you know right away. He’s just flailing out there, always a step slow.

I got pretty excited about our front line today, and they showed why, except for the fact that if you keep that many men in the box, it’s impossible to score a goal, particularly with a keeper as sharp as Valencia’s was today. Valdes was furious after the goal, and he should have been. Inexcusable. I know we don’t play like that, but foul the guy with the ball, and quit messing about. A free kick is better than what transpired, I think.

And yes, we were trying to pass the ball into the net, but as I said, the keeper was standing on his head. If Xavi puts a little bend on that first half ball, it’s a completely different affair, because Valencia has already conceded.

But after that bright start, the back and lateral passing began, and the edge went away. Henry needs to start running at goal and using his pace, instead of that little Pepe Le Pew hopping business that he does on the wing. When the ball stops, that helps a team determined not to concede do precisely that. Ball movement created the best chances.

I do think that the side has something when Iniesta is in there that it doesn’t have when it’s the Deco/Xavi combo. I would think that having Yaya back there would encourage Rijkaard to take all kinds of chances, unless he was trying to save Iniesta for the league and Champions League matches.

Now, he came close. But still: Messi, Eto’o, Henry and Ronaldinho. Turn ‘em loose. Notice how the Valencia goal came up the wing, because NOTHING was happening through the middle for them, not as long as Yaya was in the house.

I’m a little disappointed and elated at the same time. Xavi’s goal means a lot, but we still have to score against a team, at home, that doesn’t have to score at all. All they have to do is keep nine men behind the ball, one in the pocket for the possible counterattack, but really playing like an advanced defensive midfielder, and off they go to the final.

But I still think that the beautiful game has to win.

Bummer with the transmission difficulties for GolTV. When that happens with digital transmissions, the default shots are just stored, which was why we kept getting the same cutaways when the feed broke up.

And now, permit me a moment to swoon in pure man-crush joy over Yaya. As Hudson said, he is changing the way the game is played. Ball control, strength, always the right pass, and defensive skills. Add to it great balance, and you have a man who is going to go down in history as the greatest holding mid to ever play the game. Notice how much better everything has been since his return from the ACN. Suddenly, the middle is closed.

Except for Messi, there isn’t a player on the side whom I wouldn’t unload to keep him. This game is played in the midfield, and to have such a creative, brilliant Rock of Gibraltar out there is worth another couple of players.

Oh, yeah. You were right on about David Villa, ballbeav. It was a very nice goal, even thought it ripped my heart out.

And kudos to the ref for letting them play, even if that style works for the defense rather than the offense.

Does anyone know a place in San Francisco where I’ll be able to watch Saturday’s match?

we beat valencia 3-0 in mestalla earlier this year when etoo had just come back from injury, but valencia were in turmoil at that point, they didnt have david villa and they didnt have this teutonic keeper either. the first goal is friggin huge in that match. but i think we can get 2, either way.

i think deco will refind his touch — he was playing great before he got injured earlier in the season — but today he wasnt defending well and gave away too many poor passes.

valdes barely touched the ball today. unfortunately one of those non-touches was a goal.

regarding eto’o, i didnt see it clearly, but i know that the valencia players all raised their arms before he put the shot into the keeper in the 93rd. i think they were claiming a hand ball. the ball popped up and hit him at the edge of the box, i couldnt see where. afterwards they were talking to the ref and he was shaking his finger “no,” either he didnt see it, didnt think it hit his arm, or thought it was unintentional enough to play on.

i feel all puffed up, now that xavi is making y’all think again. heh heh.

I’m with ballbeav. Nothing there. He out-battled a defender to get the ball, and the rest is history. If there was a hand ball, it was next to impossible to see, and the ref justifiably let them play on. I even tried frame-by-frame with my DVR.

But no way a ref calls that one even if anything did happen, particularly a ref who has let the players decide the match to that point. Had there been a clear hand ball, he would have called it. Remember the earlier hand ball called on Eto’o.

you know what, Hildebrand is probably the worst goalie, i had ever seen in La Liga. But I was surprised to see him play so well against us…
what a day for injury time goals, first zanetti scores for inter and then xavi for us…..

If we had scored early it could have finished any score. It’s amazing that it took 26 shots to score a goal for us and only one for them. It’s horrible to think that anti-football could have won this tie.
I don’t worry that we didn’t win because rhe difference in quality will surely result in us scoring a few goals in the Mestalla. I just want us to be top of the league at that point

It’s ok, It’s allright…After Xavi’s goal, I think that was our winning signal for the next match up in the leg return. I think it will give them such a big emotional boost that they will crush them next game. Messi; a brilliant performnace once again except for the last shot he took on the goal. But if it’s messi who took it and lost it, it’s ok in my book…I know he will make it up. Yaya, hard rock haie chested lion dominating the midfield..Militi; disagreeing with everybody proved to be a true marchal and has an excellent view of the field and the opponent team movement. I think it was a perfect line up for the game…Can’t say nothin on Rikkard..Luck just was on their side actin as a shield between the ball and the net through an awesome performance of their goal keeper.
I gotta say, their goal was a piece of art. Still, the game should have been won by us by not less than a 2 goal difference.
However, Xavi’s goal was equivelent to winning the match in my humbled opinion. I do believe crushing Valencia on their field after damaging Atletico in inevitable. With such great display of dominance and football you can’t but to win. I am all filled in confidence and beware Real…It’s barcelona’s era to shine..Just watch and admire

Ah, rumours. The Daily Telegraph cites a source “close to Frank Rijkaard” saying that Rijkaard is definitely resigning at the end of this season. Hmmmm.

Wonder if that’s why Laporta said we would never fire him? Because he’s leaving on his own.
