Everybody….”Ommm, ommm.” Now breathe deep. Deeeeper….

By: Kevin | June 11th, 2009

Okay. Better now? Good.

On the other side of Spain, there’s this club that is spending money like running water. In Catalunya, there’s this club that is relaxing, and basking in the afterglow of the unprecedented triplete.

Like the meditating Buddha in this picture, that club is calm. Why?

Because it can be. We should be, as well.

Let’s take stock of where we are, really, in a transfer market that has only just begun. I’ll start from the back.

Valdes: One of the best keepers in the world
Alves: The best attacking right back in the world
Pique: Fast improving, already about the best center back on the club
Puyol: Dude. Come on. You’re kidding, right?
Abidal: Greyhound fast, still-improving but excellent left back
The Yaya:
Xavi: Best in the world at his position
Iniesta: What did I just say?
Messi: Ahem! (see above)
Henry: Still great, one good season left unless platooned
Eto’o: One of the best strikers in the world

So. What do we need to go rushing about and buying players like crazy for? We already have, at every position, a player who is the world’s best or among the world’s best. Of those players, only two, Puyol and Henry, are in their last legs of excellence.

So everyone, make like the Buddha and be calm. The transfer window has barely opened. Will we make deals? You bet. There are needs, and players that must be replaced. But the world is playing catch-up with us, kings of all that we survey.

Now, let’s have a look at what’s waiting in the wings, shall we?

Marquez: Great center back still, excellent outlet passer
Milito: Um….wait a minute….um….okay
Krkic: Fast embracing the wing, should be even better this season
Keita: Excellent defensive mid
Busquets: First-class defensive mid, should be excellent next season

And then there’s….

Caceres: Lock and load. He just needs time
Henrique: Coming home from being blooded in Germany
Botia: Will be ready for sub work this year
Pedro!!!: On the verge
Assulin: Will start the pre-season with the big boys
Thiago: Whoa, dude, the future is bright
Jeffren: (see above)

What all this means is that we’re stacked, kids. Like alphabet blocks at an OCD camp.

But we do have needs.

We need a Plan B attack. We need players who can spell Iniesta, Messi and Xavi in case of much-needed rest or injury. Note that I offer no replacement for Henry, because he is irreplacable.

The Plan B is where the bus-breaking striker comes in. We don’t need to sell Eto’o for that. But I’ve made my case for the other reasons we need to sell Eto’o. But if we renew him, buy somebody such as Llorente, and we’re done.

We do need quality subs at left and right back but not really, since Puyol can play on either side, as can Caceres. We’ve been linked with Bruno Alves and Filipe. Both would be inexpensive, and would meet needs that we have for defenders, in case of injuries, etc.

Realistically, let’s look at who’s going or already gone:

Sylvinho: An excellent career, and we wish him well
Gudjohnsen: Make an offer somebody, anybody.
Hleb: Might stay, as he knows a good thing when he has it. He can’t be any worse, right? We can play him to see how he goes, and cut bait with time left in the transfer window.

Traditionally, Barca has made smart, cost-effective purchases. We don’t run about splashing money, because we don’t have to. Particularly not with a side as stacked as it is.

So breathe deep, sit tight and wait to grok things in their fullness. Laporta, Txiki and Pep aren’t sleeping. They know what the side needs, what they have ready to go, what they can spend and how to spend it. It won’t happen in the headlines, it won’t really happen in the rumor mill.

One day, probably not as soon as most folks like, it will just. Happen. And it will all make sense, and the club will be better, and stronger. We won’t stand pat, as everyone knows what we need to improve.

And we will get it.

Ommmmm….

Achraf: Well, for a very tall striker we could get Marc Janko, he’s scored around 40 goals in Austria this year and he is 1.96, though I haven’t seen him play and cannot evaluate his technique.

Well He is 25 so thats a good age. And 40 goals is very impressive regardless of which league. But Iv never seen him play so I don’t know either.

No offense taken, Achraf, just wanted to clarify, as the integrity of the writers of this blog (and hence the blog) is important.

And your question is a good one. I think it’s a pretty small fraternity, because you need height, strength, creativity and a good first touch. He also needs a good head. Shockingly, I’m describing Didier Drogba. :D

I could even see keeping Eto’o and finding someone relatively inexpensive, such as a Llorente. I just want a Plan B attacking option, so that we can go over the top if need be.

No, I’m not advocating signing Drogba, though I wouldn’t mind having him if the price were right and he didn’t mind coming off the bench. And if he weren’t crazy. :D

The thing is Plan B is gonna become our Plan A next year because we will only play 3 or 4 “open” games next year and those are away games to our biggest rivals other than that everyone we play wih including the top teams especially in camp nou are gonna park the bus and they are gonna get good at parking bus so instead of getting a cheap replacement in case teams park bus we need to get an excellent bus breaker and a cheap replacement to play in rare games or periods in which teams actually play football. The problem is that while barcelona play games week in and week out, the teams that play us play us only twice a year so their manager has a hell of a lot of preparing for THE game. And this would lead him to the inavoidable conclusion of parking a larga ass bus.

Mikel, I was thinking the same exact thing this afternoon (about marc janko). And the best part is that his supposed asking price would be 5 million pounds. That’s pocket change for Barca. I haven’t seen him play either, and maybe he’s not as good as we would like to think considering he still plays in Austria at age 25, but why not take a 6 m euro chance on someone who definitely has the height to be that bus-breaker…

Well said Achraf. I also think that what you will find is that once we have a known bus breaking striker like Ibra teams will be less inclined to use this tactic. They only use it because it is the only thing that MIGHT work against us. I stress the word might because a lot of teams have tried to park the bus and failed, but you are right, they will get better at it. If we have a player like Ibra then a lot of teams will think twice about parking the bus because it would be even less likely to work. Teams will be forced to come out and play us because if they are going to concede anyways, even if they park the bus, then they might as well try their luck and go for it. Or at least that is the way I see it. Right now teams have no choice, they have to park the bus against us. Any team that doesn’t is foolish. So we need a plan B. Its as simple as that and if we keep Eto’o, which i really wouldnt mind so much, then we HAVE to get somebody like Llorente as a plan B. My preference is that we get Ibra, but we shouldnt pay over the market value for him and if we don’t then i would be satisfied with somebody like Llorente to complement Eto’o. I also don’t think Eto’o should get the 10mil/year he is demanding.

Damn, I guess you’re right Kxevin. I just tried ordering a shirt, just to check, and it gives me same spiel “We are unable to deliver to this country.” That sucks, how are we supposed to get all the cool stuff?

Ya I was wondering why I can’t order off the main site now? I don’t think the US site let’s you put in your Soci # to get the 10% discount.

Also, off topic as well, does anyone know where to get tickets for the game vs. the Seattle Sounders in August? I went on the Seattle Sounders website in the ticket section and the game wasn’t even listed there. Thanks in advance for any info.

Yes, and I HATE being right, Charlie and lovelymofo (best handle on the site, btw).

In other news, “reports” are that Chelsea have offered Malouda to us, as the French attacking mid doesn’t fit into Ancelotti’s plans. He fast, 29 and can play as left wing, attacking mid or second striker.

This same “report” (aggregated at Goal.com) also says that we are balking for two reasons: price (20m) and concern about his off-pitch behavior.

Placing the usual credence in this information as we customarily have, absent the character thing, not a bad move if they were willing to deal him for say, 15m. We could sit tight until Bayern came to their senses about Ribery, and Malouda would do well in the more open Liga. He would also be able to spell Henry, and work exceptionally well with Abidal.

well theres a lot of news going on today:
    http://goal.com/en/news/12/spain/2009/06/13/1322967/barcelona-offer-liverpool-etoo-in-mascherano-deal-reports

    http://goal.com/en/news/12/spain/2009/06/13/1323162/real-madrid-offer-inter-milan-sneijder-plus-cash-for-maicon
    and the usual ones:
    http://goal.com/en/news/12/spain/2009/06/13/1323313/zidane-wants-bayern-munich-playmaker-franck-ribery-at-real
    http://goal.com/en/news/553/russia/2009/06/13/1322851/i-want-to-play-for-barcelona-yuri-zhirkov

the way i see it at RM, i think they will get maicon. cuz it would be to stupid for them if they dont strengthen their defence. and maybe villa too.

and as for us, my hope is to get both ibra and ribery though it would be hard ;)
but i think we are closer to ibra than ribery (muenchen is asking crazy money), cuz ibra is being a prick at inter, not wanting to play there anymore, where as ribery if stays will still continue to work hard and respect his contract. i just hope he doesnt go to madrid. better he goes to MU both got the money to buy him..but i still dont like it.

so… for our left wing, i agree w/ kevin there bout malouda. maybe he is not as good and a prospect like david silva or ribery. but he have experience and if we can get him cheap, we could have a good LW rotation for 2-3years max (he’s 29) and he could play from the subs. and just in time for our canteras to be ready for the big league.

but still, relax, and pray..for ribery and ibra ;)

i think people are underestimating the value of ribery!

think about the versatility he could provide for our entire squad!

for arguments sake…lets say he starts on the bench while hnery stays at LW…he obviusly provides cover for the LW as his natural position but could also surely cover messi’s spot on the RW too!

furthermore…i reckon if necessary he could cover for iniesta in the midfield and distribute quite well too!!

where as with ibra…he can play where eto’o played…but like someone previously said, can you see ibra spreading out wide to the left, swapping with messi, covering in defence down the line for alves, and being OK with messi as the #9 for a while? not sure about that…or his effectiveness!

ribery will provide more cover and greater versatility…

no one is underestimating ribery. there are a lot of great comments and post about him where he could really be good for us and surely work w/ our system.
it has been said that he will work wonders w/ us and will surely give us depth as he is very versatile and can play anywhere in the midfield, even in the iniesta, and xavi role. so we can rest xavi when we need to.
the reports are saying we are already making a bid for 40mil and still negotiating. the problem is after the RM saga bayern are asking for crazy money and we are not that kind of club.
so as kevin said: “We could sit tight until Bayern came to their senses about Ribery” ;)

We definitely want us some Ribery, metzos. Henry is still a striker in a winger’s body. He had a great season, and his goals will be irreplacable when he goes, but having a winger such as Ribery who can not only lead the break but finish it, would rock our world.

Things will need to calm down a lot, however. At present, they’re saying that they will talk about Ribery if someone is willing to do something “crazy.” No way they say that a month ago.

This is either a brave new world, or temporary insanity in how the EEs, Citehs and Chelseas of the world price sensible sides out of the market. It could mean a new era of players sitting put because of absurd valuations, or prices coming down as club presidents collectively say “These prices are stupid!”

Ribery and Ibrahimovic will never happen. Not with how we buy players. It’s usually one big splash, then a lot of fill-ins such as Keita and Hleb. Perhaps if Laporta were standing for re-election, you’d see something crazy, but probably not even then.

I think barcelona need to strengthen their left wing. Bring a No 9 good in the air and hold up play. Get a genuine winger on the left wing who can consistently provide high quality crosses in the middle. Dani Alves should improve is crossing abilities. IF we do that then the teams parking the bus in front of goal will leave space on the wings and a good No 9 in the center will almost guarantee goals.

since RM are after Maicon, they’re maybe thinking of playing CR on the left and Kaka’ as a fake right wing who comes to the middle to create and still has the option of exploiting the space in front of him, with maicon doing an alves on the rigt flank when Kaka’ goes to the middle?
Still don’t see how they will fit in Ribery..

are there any south american players we’re looking into, that no other big club knows about? (so not hernanes) I would love if we fixed one of our problems with an unknown player while all the others are bidding the high numbers for solutions..

also: “a source” is suggesting mashcerano’s family don’t like liverpool and therefor he might come to barça, cause he would think his family could settle in barça..

yes you’re right, the “handling skills with both feet”, the “croqueta”, the “spoon pass”, the “bullfight of the defender”, the “dribbling 3 guys with your head up” are all moves andresito learned as a kid from pep guardiola, the dribbling devil indeed… or maybe from catherine zeta jones I don’t know :D

“pepdamentalists” wanted to make xavi and andres play as 4, good luck they realized someday that they were players that can do more harm in the opponent’s part of the court. they are a mix of a 4 and a 10, specially Iniesta… a hell of an offensive player and not just an “organiser”.

the day edgar davids “the pitbull” came to FCB, all things changed. then came some different 4’s: motta, marquez, edmilson, yaya… and the story continues.

man, this discussion is so silly… just look at the kid play!!

    http://www.elperiodico.com/blogs/blogs/johancruyff/archive/2007/10/01/iniesta-juega-en-plan-laudrup.aspx

and in cruiff everyone trusts! I don’t care what no english gentleman says. and the sentence from Iniesta is “Guardiola siempre ha sido mi ídolo, junto a Laudrup, y tenerlo como entrenador es una satisfacción” – “Guardiola as always been my idol, along with Laudrup, and having him as a coach is a satisfaction”

He was obviously being a little suck-up (internet translation of PELOTA) with pep, his coach.
