First annual Barca Offside war games, a.k.a. “My beauty sleep!”

By: Kevin | June 18th, 2009

We all know the idea of a war game, which is to simulate and work out a potential situation, based on an army in miniature, that is real or imagined. Yes, the real-life Messi is a miniature, but that’s entirely beside the point.

Transfer season has begun, though nothing will really start happening in La Liga until after the Spain Invitational, which won’t in any way stop us from having a bit of fun.

This is where our war games enter the picture. Here’s the scenario:

–We’re being very intelligent with our transfer strategy.
–Many speculate that we won’t many any significant signings.
–If we do make a signing, some also speculate, the market conditions are such that we can afford one good signing.
–Next season, we’re going to see parked buses in stadium after stadium, as Chelsea has shown the way.

So here’s the scenario: We get one purchased player, in the sensible Barca style. With that one player, devise a starting lineup, and a way to defeat a parked bus. The player purchase must be within the realm of possibility, and the bus-beating tactics must be workable.

Last season, we faced the ultimate bus and got through on a precious away goal. Can we resolve the problem? I think so, and here’s how.

Bought player: David Villa, for 50m, to replace Samuel Eto

Lineup:

————————————Valdes——————————————
Alves————–Pique—————————–Puyol—————-Abidal
————————————-The Yaya————————————–
—————————Xavi——————————Iniesta—————
Messi——————————Henry———————————Villa

Henry is the “9,” because of his size, strength, touch and ability to play with his back to the goal. Rather than running at a defense, we send Henry into the box, a la what Chelsea does with Drogba, and keep pumping balls in.

Villa is the non-disappearing Eto’o on the left wing, and potentially every bit as good out there as Henry, as once again we have a proven goal scorer playing on the left wing. Villa is also a very good passer.

Messi dive-bombs the box in his usual way from the right, working with Dani Alves to keep the defense honest. It’s still parked, but it must shift to deal with his danger. All that Henry needs is one good ball, in my fantasy world, and he can turn the trick. The advantage to having him as the “9″ is that he won’t have to run that much.

And that’s what I know. Now have at it, and I hope this as much fun as it has the potential to be, particularly given that it’s a very possible scenario.

Good question about the Henry free kicks. He took most of them at Arsenal, and scored some stunners. I also think, pursuant to one comment, that you can learn to take free kicks effectively, without seeking to gain them as part of an overall strategy. The way that Messi and Iniesta take fouls around the box, free kicks are part of our strategy whether we want them to be or not.

@Bill: You’re right about the Bears. I even recall some of the same conversations, about bringing in new blood, etc, and people reacted in much the same way Eto’o fans react. Interesting, because you have a team that was excellent, but was also a few lucky breaks away from NOT being excellent, if excellence is defined by titles.

I think that once the Spain Invitational is over, we’ll start to see what’s what with whom. I still believe that with this being a Cup year, and the absurd player valuations forced by the Kaka and Poo Poo sales, we just aren’t going to see a lot of big-time player movement this summer.

etoo is one hell of a 9 for sure

but changing the subject, don’t you think we need and offensive midfielder (or masche so yaya can go up) or a good left wing more than a fat bus driver? (sorry … breaker)

Kxevin, I think the Cup year will be a factor for sure. But only on Benzema type of players. Unless if it will has a domino effect on clubs well to sell, I think some hot transfer targets are already guaranteed as vital options in their national teams.

RM still has a shopping list. They spread money on other teams, and the teams spend it as well. Man Utd will need to buy at least 2 players to Cover ronaldo absence. hate him or like him, he was a wing and a striker at the same time. And now with no Tevez for man utd, they are scratching their heads for sure.

Milan will buy, or bye bye. The team is aging. The fans are upset. the money are available. and the coach is new.

Inter will by some flops. As usual. No offense for Inter fans. Alright unless if they bought Eto’o :D

    Valencia will sell.

Not sure about Roma Finincial situation. its always a mysterious situation. I am not sure if Perez will offer them a help. He may target Di rossi and Mexes. Its just a matter of time.

And Barcelona have no choice but buying. It is a Cup year, but for Barcelona it is also an Election year. And If eto’o left, we have to choice, we need to buy.

So It will be a long period…

Dont worry Hector…u will survive :D

We don’t need an offensive midfielder that much. Thiago is coming from the cantera, and he’s one to look for the future for sure, he’s a Deco-like player, I believe.

A for the winger, Bojan can play well there, but I wouldn’t mind getting one.

The bad behavioral reports originated from sport not goal.com.

I dont why people act like if eto’o leaves wewill implode and cease to exist. Better strikers have left and we are still her. heck, even ronaldinho left. We wil adapt and move on if he leaves like we always have.

    getafe :D

if he improves he can play left wing, but having messi in one side and a shadow in the other like all this year is too asymetrical for a team that wants to be a dynasty.

Yeah I was going to say, when you reading goal.com and it says “According to Sport” or “According to El Mundo Deportivo” then they are just translating what those sites say. The titles of these stories are sometimes stretched to be more dramatic than they are by goal.com Like Ibra could say “Barcelona is a great team” and the headline would be “Ibrahimovic says Barca or nothing” lol.

I don’t think Bojan is bad on the left wing at all. Especially in the last couple of games, he was our best player and gave Samu some great balls.

Yeah, Ramzi I think I will (barely, but will) but, hey, isn’t this conversation we’re all having more fun than keeping up to date and overreacting to all the latest transfer lies and rumors (mostly lies)? :D Just saying. We should do this more often to survive the silly season. Thank you, Kevin!

Shingai- That’s a very fair and valid point regarding Yaya and Mascherano both being starter quality players. You are right, which is why I think this deal won’t come to fruition but if it does I’ll be jumping up for joy :D . Dreaming is free like mku said. Almost a requisite to be a Barca player is to be able to play multiple positions. This makes it very odd that I am advocating Mascherano who only plays defensive mid but I am convinced that (1)he is the best in the world not only as a defensive mid but for our style of defending (in space) he is THE BEST hands down and (2) he will free us up to take full advantage of the versatility of players like, Iniesta, the Yaya, and Keita. Injuries happen (as to Africa Cups) and everybody will get their chances. I think that this will also let Xavi and Iniesta rest more often. The key is everybody buying in and players like Bojan, Busi, Caceres, and Keita accepting the Copa del Rey as their very own challenge. That’s were Pep comes in. Mascherano quite possibly can’t happen but having the two best DM’s in the world (and one of them can play everything from CB to attacking midfielder well) will put our depth over the edge into dynasty territory. We have wings coming out of our years in the Cantera. Look at guys like Jeffren and Gai who have first team potential (Pedrito sadly will probably go on loan or get sold). Hopefully they will start getting integrated into the squad and can give us the personnel to give the Copa another realistic shot this year and get the opportunity to fight for a first team slot. Gai and Gerard are potentially world class talents that in the coming years will get their shot at left wing.

I love this blog, and it’s the most precise and fulfilling place to go for Barca news during the season, but since Isaiah has gone to Africa, I feel it’s taken a dip.

No offense to you Kevin, you’re writing is on point, but I feel like there’s a lot more to report on that’s going un-discussed on the blog.

Anyone else thinking the same thing?

Nope. I think Kxevin has done a great job with some interesting posts. Isaiah adds his own flavor and the blog is best with both of them writing, but I don’t think it has taken a dip at all. There’s been a lot of intelligent discussion regarding transfers and what not because that is what there is to talk about. He even made a couple of Confederation Cup (Spain Invitational) posts. Props to Kxevin.

What else is there to report on right now? I know my bitching and whining about the silly season is well known but I stand by it. The transfer season news is 98% outright lies and BS. This is after years of following sport, EMD, Marca, and others almost religiously, and worrying about every single rumor that comes out. I learned that its no worth it. Every day something new comes out and odds are that it is a blatant fabrication. For US posters, European sports mags (and the BS that is goal.com) routinely blatantly fabricate news. Its not SI or ESPN, its even worse. Don’t stress out over everything. Then again maybe that’s just me. :D

If Isaiah absence will have no impact then he will not be the brilliant guy he is. The same as Kevin absence will leave an impact if Isaiah had to run this thing alone. Being not Identical give every blog visitor the chance to find what match his taste. So its all good.

Beside, this blog has more a style of a forum than a news blog. anything u wish to discuss you can throw it on the page and I guarantee you all the wolves of the blog will jump in and give it a bite :D

So feel free to make up for Isaiah absence;)

Jonathan, you’re certainly entitled to your opinion. All are welcome. But if there’s something missing, tell me what it is. We’ve recapped the season, done MVPs, best goal, best match etc, even unintentionally insulted some folks.

I’m not a big fan of reacting to every transfer rumor that is floated in the press by some player’s agent, even ones that involve our players. We only have two players who are in absolute fact for sale, Gudjohnsen and Eto’o. And really only one needs discussing. I don’t have to tell you who that one is.

We deal with Confederations Cup action in the comments spaces, as well. So if there’s something absent, tell me what it is, by way of helping the space improve. I visit the various footy sites (EMD, Sport, AS, etc) for news, as well as the aggregators such as Goal.com. There isn’t any news coming out of our club. And man, do I appreciate the fact that everybody isn’t at everybody else’s throat over the latest transfer rumor, and the merits of this player or that player.

I view a space such as Pep’s blog as a companion to this space. That’s where people can go for the rumors, gossip and transfer speculation. He does a great job over there.

Finally, the best part about this blog is that everyone is welcome to take part in it. If something is missing, tell us what it is and we’ll fix it, as long as it’s in the realm of what we do. But I can tell you that Isaiah is even less of a fan of transfer gossip than I am. :D If you want to do a guest post, my e-mail is kevvwill@yahoo.com. Fire away, and we’ll make something happen.

@Hector: Thanks. I thought it would be a lot more productive than fighting over Ashley Young rumors, what Ibrahimovic might bring to the table, etc.

@Jnice: Thanks for the props. It’s hard generating posts when there’s nothing to post about. But I have ideas, so expect something new this evening.

Quick question: Does everyone want an Italy/Brazil comments post, or should we let this excellent discussion run its course?

please name the bus breakers or the eligible 9’s that you think can come to FCB and do better than samu.

I would stick with samu and I can’t think of many better than him. I just want to know how many are there according to well informed football fans.
