Mind your bus windows, we know how those blue noses have an affinity for smashing teams in the Spanish league’s bus windows…

And because the Rangers wear blue, Barcelona will be in their orange kit today. I have to say, I’ve really come to like that orange jersey quite a lot. Way better than that yellow one we had before, though I bet Chelsea wears orange next year…

Barce’s formation today:
–Puyol-Milito-Thuram-Abidal
——–Iniesta-Xavi
Messi-Gudjohnson-Ronaldinho-HenryShould be dubbed “No fun for Xavi.”
Even Puyol and Adibal were playing further forward than what looked like the soul mid-fielder.Posted from

So I didn’t get to watch thanks to a faulty VCR, but a friend of mine said there was a handball in the box against Rangers that wasn’t called that probably would have made it 1-0. Is this true? It wasn’t mentioned in Soccernet’s match report, but what’s new about them being incomplete? Sport mentions it in their live blog of the game, but only in passing.
I’ll post more tomorrow.

there was a handball in the box, but it was’nt intentional. Many refree’s would have given it but I would not have given it if I was the refree.
Messi had a quiet game by his standards.
An entertaining match in the end..Posted from

yes, there was indeed a handball in the box. ronaldinho saw it immediately and hollered for the ref to call it but he didn’t. i’m sure there will be a video somewhere in the highlights so you can judge for yourself on the call. i would’ve called it. i think that it would have made the game 1-0 but it’s a moot point now.

I think that Messi summed it up best, when he said that Rangers played “antifootball.” Ugly, ugly, ugly. Our lads looked tired, and Iniesta was curiously quiet. Henry HAS to start showing more, and Gudjohnsen made me once again ask: Why? Ronaldinho spends too much time screwing around with the ball. The way to open up a side determined to not concede is to move the ball quickly and run off the ball well. They did neither, unfortunately. There were some great chances in the box that went begging, particularly from Henry. Rangers keep saying they’re proud, but they shouldn’t be. I understand the necessity of lesser teams to play like that against a better side, but it’s sure ugly to watch.

I actually found it a very exciting game. The Rangers did play ugly football - defense is usually ugly. But what is the suggestion, that they intentionally try to spread their players through Barcelona’s press leaving their defense to be eaten alive by Messi and co.? That sounds more like forfeit. Don’t forget that Barcelona shut down most of Rangers attempts to pass midfeild, forcing them back on their heels. The Rangers played the only kind of ball that could keep them in the game. Barce’s troops can fuss all they want, but Rangers earned the tie.

All true, John. But Rangers were never committed to coming past midfield, except in the last few minutes of the match. They definitely earned the tie, but it wasn’t pretty. It’s why I said I understand the necessity of playing a game like that. I just don’t think that teams at that level should play not to lose. Barcelona can be beaten at their own game. Villarreal did it on Saturday, and Rangers do have talent. For sure, who wants to be on the business end of a 7-0 thrashing such as Arsenal doled out? But Rangers are better than that, and Barca are beatable right now.

I thought it was very entertaining, actually. Barca played well and were just unlucky, while Rangers probably deserved their point. (Although that handball was a penalty, IMHO.)
Isaiah, by not seeing the game you missed Puyol’s awesome performance at rightback.

I agree, Linda. Puyol was INCREDIBLE!

Yes.. So true.. PUYOL flying at the RB.. Play great offence esp in the 1st half..
For me, Barca dominate but couldn’t create much chance.. so frustrating, they should play better and Rangers play like 15 defenders.. Great defending by Rangers but we deserved that Penalty! It was robbed from us!

I still think it would have been a harsh penalty - clearly unintentional. It would have been especially harsh if that would have decided the game.

John, I disagree. Having seen the replays, the handball was somewhat unintentional, but his arm was out away from his body and I believe the shot had a decent chance of going in directly had it not hit his arm. His arm was used defensively, as it he threw it forward in order to get it in front of the ball. That’s a hand ball and because it’s in the box, it’s a penalty. If you’re going to call it in the open field, call it in the box too.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=KXB0s7ZdgSY Here’s a clip of it for all of you who haven’t seen it. The play is at 50 seconds.
It wouldn’t have been a harsh penalty and deciding the game that way would have meant that the better team won (all the match reports I’ve read suggest Barcelona deserved to win and Rangers deserved, at most, one point, meaning they specifically didn’t deserve all 3 points).
Regardless, it’s a moot point and we’ve got Almeria to think of.

Oh, I should point out that intentional or not, that’s a handball. Unintentional handballs where the arm is pressed against the body are different than ones where the arm is extended from the body (thus creating a wider surface area to block with). You can’t remove your arms and you have to be allowed to block the ball.
But this wasn’t one of those situations. His arm is clearly not pressed against his side and he even swings it forward into the path of the ball. If he’d left it down, it would have gone by him and perhaps the keeper behind him would have blocked it, but we’ll never know because he slapped the ball.
