A quick query on the renewal of a certain Mexican’s contract.

By: Joan | November 17th, 2009

An old Mexican man, worn from years of work and the testing weight of life, once told me as I stood in (for the night) the oddly contemplative McDonalds, waiting for possibly the most time-consuming six pack of McNuggets I’d ever ordered: “The broken man comes back strong and desperate, the gently caressed comes back when he feel it’s safe to do so”

Now what could that possibly have in it that’s relevant to Rafael Marquez?

Nothing. I made it up. I just needed a way to segue into the issue of his contract renewal without being overly harsh. I dig Marquez, for a couple of reasons: he’s one of the better long-range passers in the game, he’s tough, he has a breathtaking head of hair (deceptively important), he reminds me of Adrian Grenier (also more important than you might believe), and he’s been one of the long-serving members of the club to good effort and ability. In short, the man did his job and did it well, one or two seasons notwithstanding.

Recently, there’s been a fair bit of murmur surrounding his contract renewal and how it is, according to Marquez, a matter of ‘finding a time’ to sign it. Given his track record as a winner of nine trophies since his arrival from Monaco in 2003 – suggesting, albeit immaturely, that you could argue Barcelona’s recent success could be entirely attributed to the Entourage star look-a-like. I personally suggest you try arguing this point on message boards around the internet, but please be so courteous as to link me when you do. I’m always looking for a hearty laugh.

Should Barcelona be renewing his contract? Let’s see:

• Other central defenders at the club: the mountain that is Puyol; the slightly better looking mountain that is Piqué; the Riddler, wearing a suit adorned with question marks, Chygrynskiy; the ever-maligned Milito; and in reserve, Fontás and Muniesa – two men we all have high hopes for. Come the end of this season, Marquez might also find himself battling with Henríque for a spot in the starting eleven. That’s not even (until now, pedants) highlighting the on-loan Cacéres, who none of us believe will return.
• Though stalwart in his appearances last season, Marquez has been prone to more than the occasional error, even in good form. His gaff of Super Clasico proportions last season might have been deathly had Valdés not done his “I’m underrated, watch this!” dance and shattered Drenthe’s confidence. The season before that he was unbelievably poor, though largely attributed to personal issues, and this season he has been less than stellar but injured much of the time. So maybe I’m being a cruel bastard. If so, forgive me: years of listening to Morrissey tell me that life is miserable has paid its toll on my fragile gate.
• He’ll be 31 at season’s end. His injuries will carry on snickering maliciously from behind his knee-caps, and Barcelona will sigh every time they go into another heavy-weight fixture with Guardiola slinking into the dressing room, looking at Touré and saying, “So, how about it?”

I mean, GeeWiz! There’s definitely a case against a contract renewal. On the other gloved, rhinestone coated hand, there is this:

• Marquez, as I’ve said for years, “Brings the fucking game.” He’s tough. He’s an art form of nails coated in nitroglycerin who fights rabid pitbulls every morning just to snare enough meat for breakfast. When opponents begin to get grade-school bullyish on Barcelona, Marquez is never far from a crunching “Send him off, ref!” tackle to set the record straight, “This is Barcelona, and we don’t take your shit.”
• He is quality, and has been for six years. I can’t properly describe the sordid pleasure I derive from his on point cross-field passes, flicking his famously slicked hair as he does it, before back-stepping into the center of defense again, nonchalant-as-you-please.
• Versatile. He can play as a defensive midfielder, and can play it well. See his time as a makeshift libero for Mexico at the last World Cup. Stunning play all around.

(Woo-hoo! Tasty compilation for the undecided, coupled with gravelly rock star screaming and thrashing guitars to sway your opinion – as any good compilation ignoring the blurst of times should)

So, what’s the consensus? Yay or nay? Ahoy or “Get off my ship”?

    Good post.

I think it’s probably time for him to go. Like Eto’o–it’s just kind of a feeling, and I think it’s time. But, I think it also depends on how well Txigi pans out. When he just arrived he played like a revelation, doing exactly what Marquez does (which is pretty much what Pique does, except Pique owns both), but his form since a short-term injury has been pretty unsatisfactory.

That said, I think renewing his contract at this point would be kind of a waste of money. He is undoubtedly next on the chopping block in that position.

I have never been a fan of Marquez and I wouldn’t be offering him a new contract

Barca Shirts: Why have you not been a fan of Marquez? What it is it about him that grinds your gears?

I adored and still adore Rafa, and his style of play, and his hair, and everything… but I admit I’m hesitant on seeing him renew his contract. He’s been far from his best lately (and by lately, I mean months)… but we don’t have a reliable substitute for when Puyol&Piqué are not available… and he deserves more time in the club, after all he’s done for us…
I don’t know. I think my sentimental side will win and I will celebrate the renewal of his contract, and then grumble for the next two years when he misses a pass…
On good news, Milito played his first match with the team today ever since his injury at Old Trafford, on the “friendly” Barça played against Bolívar… he might be back soon! :)

Rafa, no! Here’s the fundamental problem with him: He has a lost step that he doesn’t make up with the fire of a Puyol. The arrival of Txigrinski and the impending return of Milito makes his having a contract even more of an irrelevancy.

Personally, I think that he’s being signed just to make him easier to sell. Because out on loan right now, we also have Botia (Pique with more pace) and Adriano (who will become Henrique when he starts playing like a man). This doesn’t even take into consideration the fact that Muniesa is ready to start playing with the big boys, and we should see him more next pre-season.

So I just don’t get the Marquez renewal. This game should be bloodless. Look at Sylvinho. Everybody liked him, he was the quintessential classy veteran. But he couldn’t cut it at our level any longer. And we cut him loose.

Marquez does deserve time to come fully back from his injury. I don’t think he’s there yet. But with a healed Milito and Txigrinski, I just don’t see Marquez ever gettting playing time except in the case of injuries.

Tell you what, if you had told me we’d be getting some 6 years of proper service when he got nicked from Monaco, i would’ve had a chuckle. Yeah, he’s a bit slow and has his nefarious moments but I’ve lost count how many times he’s faked a pressing forward and then just gone and swallowed 40 meters with an inch perfect lob. Is his time up? Well, that depends on the situation of Milito, Henrique, Caceres, Muniesa, Fontas, and Botia. A bit of a log jam but i wouldn’t mind it if he’d wanted to go on and play a season or two somewhere else… it’d be easier to gulp than offering a contract extension till the end of time.

Oh, Kxevin, don’t remind me of Sylvinho! I still miss him! :( But your arguments do make sense, however much it pains me to say it…
And Pedro, let’s consider that Rafa’s contract extension would be for only two years; after that, he’s said he wants to return to Mexico. Two years are just enough time for players like Chygrynskiy, Fontàs, Botía, Muniesa or Henrique to mature and earn a proper place in the team, so…

Perhaps, Ade but you know how long and short a season is. In a year or two Henrique might not be around, Botia will have moved on and Sandrusco Rosell will be busy answering questions in the official presentation of some burly defender named Vidic or who ever else.

Well, Pedro, I like Vidic, if not Sandro Rosell, but you’re right in that we ought to tie one or two of the youngsters already. That doesn’t mean we have to let go of Rafa, though. Let’s give him another season, a time to take some of the young’uns under his wing and teach them a couple of tricks, and then give him a celebratory match and wave him goodbye as he goes to Mexico.

This guy is the biggest waste of money! I will admit he was pretty damn good a couple of years ago. But from what i’ve seen in the last 2 years the best thing he’s good at is warming the bench. He hasn’t done shit all season; either gets injured or catches a virus and if he plays he’ll either get a red card, cause a penalty, or fuck up somehting in the back. He was a good player but does not belong in Barcelona anymore. We have many top notch players back there already. No way he’s replacing any of them and I doubt he’ll even play this season.
