News of the Day: Mascherano’s New Contract, Muniesa’s Surgery and more… UPDATED with injury news!By: Ade C. | July 31st, 2012
-First things first, Javier ‘Monster’ Mascherano signed his new contract today! Running until 2016, and with a modest 100 million euro buy-out clause, this contract means that Barça will have the most reliable (form- and injury-wise) of its defenders for a few years more.
-Marc Muniesa had his knee surgery this morning, to repair the ACL he torn in the friendly vs Hamburg. All the best for Muni, here’s to hoping his recovery is swift and that he stops having such cruddy luck with injuries.
ETA: Doctors Cugat and Pruna have given a press conference this afternoon. The highlights are:
-Muniesa’s surgery went well. He’s expected to be back in 6-8 months, around February if all goes well. On top of his torn ACL, the doctors also repaired an associated meniscus injury in his knee.
-Villa has medical clearance, at last! While’s not yet ready to compete, he’s now in the hands of the team physios and he could be back in a matter of ‘days’.
-Fontàs‘ estimated return date is August 7th.
-The Catalan SuperCup has become the latest matter of contention for the club. Scheduled originally for today (smack in the middle of preseason), it was cancelled when the Catalan FA got mad that Barça intended to play with the B team. After much going back and forth, it was re-scheduled for September 26th (between Granada at home and Sevilla away), but now we hear that Espanyol refuses to play during Liga season. One more point for Spain’s (and Catalunya’s) woeful football institutions.
ETA II: The Catalan SuperCup HAS BEEN CANCELLED. There. One glorified friendly less to worry about.
-We leave you with the highlights to the 0-8 dismantling of Raja Club in Morocco. Messi hat-trick, of course. I wonder how many times we’ll say those words this season.
