Racing - Barcelona, a quick rundown

By: Isaiah | August 24th, 2007

Gametime: Sunday 1pm EST (live on GolTV, unless the threatened suspension of television rights for the game happens. Let’s hope not! For an explanation of why this is happening, go read this: Spanish / Google Translator English)

It’s the first match of the new season and so it’s the first preview of the season (imagine that). The game is away in Santander, Cantabria at the Estadio el Sardinero, which actually does translate to The Sardine, though it may have some other meaning locally that I’m unaware of. Racing de Santander finished 10th in La Liga last year with 50 points, finishing with 42 goals for and 48 against (13th in both categories). In their two encounters, Barcelona won both 0-3 at Santander (Jornada 3) and 2-0 at home (Jornada 22). Eto’o, Giuly, and Ronaldinho (pen) scored in the first match, while Ronaldinho grabbed a pair in the home match.

Naturally the squads look quite different, so here’s a list of what Racing did in terms of transfers this summer:

IN
Jonatan Valle (Málaga)
Ayoze (C. de Murcia)
Samuel (Sporting)
Trevi
Duscher (Deportivo)
Jorge López (Valencia)
Jordi López (Mallorca)
Sergio Sánchez (Espanyol)
Brian Sarmiento (Estudiantes de la Plata)

OUT
Matabuena
Alfaro (retirado)
Balboa (Real Madrid)
Scaloni (Lazio)
Felipe Melo (Almería)
Antonio Tomás (Deportivo)
Momo (Deportivo)
Rubén (Celta)
Zigic (Valencia)
Vitolo (Celta)

Santander looks like it lost a lot more than it gained; Zigic will start at Valencia or at least get major playing time, while Balboa’s return to RM is also a negative, though not as much of one. Scaloni’s absence shouldn’t be too badly felt, but it’s just an extra player to replace and that’s never a good thing. They won’t match up well with Barcelona’s attack (is that a surprise?) and without Zigic, I’m not sure they’ll match up well at all against Barca’s defense, “makeshift” as it will be. [the rumors that Javier Chevanton had joined Santander seem incorrect, as the player himself has stated that he's not going, but that could change in a moment, of course.]

Now to Barcelona: Though the official list hasn’t been released yet, the starting lineup should look like this:

Valdes
Zambrotta,Thuram,Marquez,Abidal
Xavi, Toure, Iniesta
Messi, Ronaldinho
Eto’o

The only difference between that and what I want to see out there are the injured Puyol and suspended Milito, so it’s the best lineup I can think of with the currently available players. I’ll just go ahead and assume that Eto’o will be fully recovered from any jetlag incurred on his jetsetting adventure to Japan and back (and the same goes for Marquez). Everyone else stuck to Europe so if they’re not okay based on time differences, they shouldn’t be pro athletes. It should be the first test of Henry’s willingness to come off the bench, so that’s something to look forward to as well.

So my official prediction is 0-2, Ronaldinho and Messi scoring. Woohoo for that.

Don’t forget the Madrid derby on Saturday either, though GolTV looks like it’s going to broadcast the game at 6pmEST rather than live at 2pmEST. Is that right or is the GolTV official schedule often wrong?

I’m going to be pissed if none of the La Liga games are on this weekend. My friends are in from Spain and we want to watch the Sevilla-Getafe game.

JC, Milito is suspended because of yellow cards incurred at the end of last season. He’s only suspended for one game.

Here is the full squad listing:
Valdés, Jorquera, Zambrotta, Oleguer, Thuram, Márquez, Sylvinho, Abidal, Xavi, Touré, Iniesta, Deco, Marc Crosas, Messi, Eto’o, Ronaldinho, Henry and Ezquerro.

Ezquerro makes a return to the fold and Marc Crosas gets the call to sit on the bench as well. I still believe in the starting 11 that I posted above, but we’ll see.

Ryan, yeah, I’m going to be pissed if they’re not showing the games, but not as pissed as you because you have some friends in town to watch it. The Sevilla game is listed as being live on GolTV at 4pmEST; I’m just concerned about the Madrid derby not being live. We’ll see, though.

Any word on whether or not the game will be on tv in the states? I am going to be very upset if I can’t watch this game…I’ve been waiting for too long. Need to watch Messi or else!

There is no official word on whether or not this game will be aired, but as of right now I don’t think it will be. There’s always an outside chance, but if the Madrid derby is anything to go by, it won’t be on.

But don’t quote me on that. Try your local pub and ask if they know for some reason and then keep looking online. It seems the decision not to broadcast the Madrid game came at the last moment, so it’ll be up in the air until 12:59 probably.

You can always try internet feeds if you don’t get GolTV. livefooty.doctor-serv.com is one of the many (feel free to post others) and they might be able to carry the game despite GolTV’s inability.

Because unlike all other leagues on earth, La Liga’s TV rights are decided differently. Just like the system of choosing a champion (head-to-head rather than goal difference), La Liga has to be original.

As I understand it, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla sell their TV rights independent of the rest of the league and thus any disputes which may arise over them don’t affect the rest of the league, only those teams who are playing FCB, RM, and Sevilla. Remember last year (I think) when Sevilla’s games weren’t being broadcast? Same issue, different club.

It’ll get resolved, but I’m trying to find a good explanation with all the ins and outs of this terrible tragedy (ha) so that I can post it for all to read and understand.

The reason the Sevilla game was on TV was because La Sexta, who always carries the 10PM Game on Saturday night in Spain, basically said ‘a tomar por culo’ and just showed the game anyway.

and it then was picked up by GolTV, who owns the rights to the games in the states. Download TVU player and ‘alli la tienes’

Ryan, thanks for clarifying that. I had previously been thinking it was a league-wide issue, but then assumed that the same thing that happened with Sevilla’s games before was happening again, especially since I read an article (where, I can’t remember) saying that the top 3 clubs were exempt from the league-wide deal that was affecting La Sexta’s ability to show games.

Does TVU player have more options than Sopcast?

TVU is quite handy, especially for GolTV.

(Not that I am in anyway advocating any illegal activity, cough cough.)
