Season recap pt. III: Most improved player, a.k.a. “Uh, oh…”
By: Kevin | June 6th, 2009
This one is going to be a good’un, because first we have to establish parameters, and lord knows how you do that. Should they have been with the side last season, so that we have something to go on? No, because a player can improve withIN a season to become something spectacular.
And how do you really evaluate “most improved,” which is very different from “most valuable.” To me, you have to look at the effect that a player has, simply put, and the changes he has made in his game. For me, and I know that this is going to be contentious, that player is Eric “What? Red?” Abidal.
So. Why Abidal? Because last season, he went from being a player that everybody except me wanted to see on a rail out of town, to a critical part of our back line, as evinced by what happened during his 8-week injury stretch. He wasn’t quite the same when he came back, and got hosed on a couple of unfortunate red cards.
But his sideline-to-sideline range, pace, growing abilities to become part of the attack and freedom that he gives the defense, help make his case. He didn’t quite know what to do or how to do it last season, though he was very solid. Is it Guardiola? Possibly. But you could see the roaming freedom that the likes of Pique, Alves and Marquez had when Abidal was in. He also made The Yaya’s life a lot easier, and was a godsend to Iniesta for that little possession-controlling back pass, that Abidal always made himself available for.
Yes, there were lots of contenders. Pique went from a “Huh? Who? What?” member of the back line, to its best player, making critical save after critical save. Messi added passing to his bag of tricks, but let’s not kid ourselves: He was pretty spectacular already. Iniesta stepped out of the shadows, but he was always a great player. Thierry Henry was a very strong candidate, but really, all he did was become the player that he should have been from the outset of his tenure in the Blaugrana.
Iniesta was my second place, mostly because of the effect we see when he isn’t in the side. Xavi seems a little more unsettled, the midfield doesn’t flow as smoothly and the left side of the attack loses a bit of magic. You could almost declare it a draw, but we don’t do draws in these parts.
So it’s Abidal, for me. And when you all are done calling me a jackass, let’s hear your most improved players.
Ready….GO!
Next up, and the final round of the Season Recap before we start having fun with transfer rumors, will be MVP. I have a surprise for that one, as well. How ’bout that?

Laporta about new signings this summer (3 or 4 great players are planned):
“We want to sign players, though, for the right price. In a time of economic crisis we have to set an example.”Puh… that’s quite a relief for me. We are not going nuts like Real Madrid or Chelsea will. We will certainly not pay 40 Mio. for Zlatan or anybody else.

Actually a pretty good article if you speak Spanish- http://sport.es/default.asp?idpublicacio_PK=44&idioma=CAS&idnoticia_PK=619253&idseccio_PK=803
Its titled “¡Corred, cabrones, corred!” or roughly translated “Run, you bastards, run!” which is what Pep tells his players. Its him explaining in a seminar, his philosophy of ball pressuring. Another gem regarding the Yaya: “He started out as a central midfielder but I’ve been steadily moving back ever since. I already told him that next year he’s going to replace Valdés”.

Thats a good article, Hector. Though I had to translate it on Freetranslation.com , Not a quality translation.
I cant wait his lecture at the following UEFA Elite club Coaches forum. He will be there for sure. Barcelona already proved thru team tactics this season that lot of last year Forum recommendations being unnecessarily true. Which gives me lot of satisfaction mixed with pleasure.
I don’t like permanent judgments and tactical – MUST FOLLOW- receipts in football, even if it comes from the “Elite UEFA coaches”.

Same here, Ramzi. The guy’s got cojones. A large part of his philosophy at first glance seems obvious but one needs extraordinary players to execute it and the bravery to take the risk it implies. Like Pep said: “There’s no secret in football, the question is to have the ball or not to have the ball. We choose to have the ball which logically means the other team cannot have it.” Then there is his Cruijffian influence. He also says that when facing a taller team, during corner kicks, he would place three Barcelona players on the opposing side of the pitch, necessitating the opposing team to keep at least 4 defenders back and therefore reducing their numbers in the box. That’s cojones.
Hey, regarding Argentina. At least Milito played well, he did a very good job holding up the ball. He needs to keep starting IMO. Kun is not a real #9. Also, for goodness sake, give me some Burdisso, Nico Parejo or Gonzalo as a CB and play 4 in the back. Argentina does not have the creativity at midfield to play a 3-4-3. Given the available personnel, I’d want Diego to look back at his Napoli days. Play a Napoli style 4-3-1-2. Seven warriors, a genius (Maradona/Messi) and two strikers. Argentina does not have the players at this time to play Spanish tiki-taka. They have to be disciplined and play more tactical. Right now, they are doing a horrible job of holding their lines and all three lines are doing too much freelancing. Put in Cambiasso over Gago. Zanetti has to start. Heinz CANNOT. If he insists on a 4-4-2. How about Higuain (HELLO!?!?! Call him up Diego) on the left wing, Maxi on the right, with Masch and Cambiasso/Gago/Veron/Lucho next to him, Milito at the 9, and Messi in the hole?
Yeah, I’m still pissed.

“Experience is not age, it is learning how to confront and resolve problems. Defending is not just about building a wall and stopping the opposition getting close to your goal; it can also be about keeping possession and stopping them getting close to the ball. Bravery is not just launching into risky tackles, it is also remaining committed to a risky style. Playing prettily and playing to win are not necessarily mutually exclusive – certainly not when you have these players.”
Sid Lowe
Pretty nice huh?

If this was true (which i doubt), then I’ve never heard a player make such a bold statement while under contract.

Great news… Ruud van Nistelrooy is being linked with a move away from Madrid.
Thats great news. How stupid are Madrid if they let RVN go, and keep Raul. RVN is the best 18y-box striker and finisher in the world.
I hope he gets a move away from the EE.

Most Improved Player For Me:Gerard Pique. At ManUtd he was the substitute of the substitute and now he’s been our best CB.

Who cares about Kaka. Take away his space to the point where he can’t kick it and run and he’s not a threat. He doesn’t have great close control, always needs the ball to be out in front while sprinting. It’s not like his passing is so creative either. I’ve never been that impressed with Kaka to be honest and he didn’t do much in yesterdays Brazil game but score a penalty that Dani Alves created, but of course As paints him as the central figure of the demolition of Uruguay. He scored the last goal ffs. To be honest, I don’t think he will be a hit at Madrid. Like I said before, Real Madrid sign Kaka we have Iniesta, Real Madrid sign Ronaldo we have Messi.

Eto’o and Cameroon seem to be on the verge of failing to qualify for WC 2010. Their display is absolutely horrible, I don’t see any “Indomitable Lion” on the pitch

I’m watching Ivory Coast play Guinea right now and like in the African Cup of Nations, Yaya doesn’t even play defensive mid. Zokora does. Yaya is playing more of an attacking midfield role and it’s so fun to watch. He comes back on defense to help but he is almost like Ivory Coast’s “number 10″. This is the worst camera angle I have ever watched a game in, though.
