Season recap pt. IV, Most Valuable Player, a.k.a. “And you thought I was crazy before!”

By: Kevin | June 7th, 2009

Aw, man! When you look at awards and personal accolades for a team that almost ran out of trophies (we left the Copa Catalunya on the table, remember?) over the course of a season, identifying recipients for individual honors can be difficult, verging on impossible.

But in this case, the man we see here is my Most Valuable Player. I expect it to be a controversial choice, to say the least. Some blog spotters here might actually track me down and kneecap me. :D

Let me make a case for Victor Valdes.

Keepers get zero love. Zero. The Messis, Xavis and Iniestas of the world get all the accolades and plaudits, but what a keeper must do is, essentially, make sure that his side is in a position to win the match by not conceding a goal. In this he relies upon his defense but really, it’s him.

All him, alone on the stage.

We ran up gaudy scorelines this season, but at the other end of it was a lot of small numbers, 1s and 0s. Valdes has conceded goals this season, some of which were his fault, but most weren’t. He’s made blunders, most notably the ridiculous clearance that led directly to an Espanyol goal.

But to me, value is what you do to put the side in position to win and match after match, time after time, Valdes has done that. If we score 3 and give up 4, it doesn’t work. People only began singing his praises late in the season, but think of the key stops he has made this season, stops that if they aren’t made, matches might have been very different. I’ll offer you just two, but they’re huge:

–His stop(s) in the first Clasico, pushing a Sneijder(?) blast over the top, then stonewalling Drenthe, who was in all alone. If either of those go in….

–Stopping Drogba not once, but twice at the Camp Nou, from point-blank range, bailing out his defense, who cocked it up.

If either of those don’t happen, the season is potentially very different. Perhaps instead of the treble, we’re looking at being consoled with the Copa. Messi, Henry and Eto’o score the goals, and Xavi sets them up. But none of it is possible without a keeper who makes the stops that he has to, when he has to.

He’s made some mistakes. Everyone has. Xavi’s missed open shots and had off matches. Messi’s gone missing. Henry and Eto’o have missed sitter after sitter, Iniesta has made like a real-life ghost, and disappeared.

The side still rolled on, because keepers can’t have off matches. When they do, their side usually loses. So for that reason, VV is my MVP. People tend to point to his errors rather than his excellence, which is easy to do, even if the excellence far, far outstrips the errors. His overall season rating won’t reflect his MVP status, because there have been matches where he didn’t have a whole lot to do, but when called upon, almost every time, he did the trick.

Laporta just called Valdes the best keeper in the world. I wouldn’t go that far. But he’s definitely in the Top 10. And when people talk about bringing in other people, Asenjo, Buffon, you name it, pop in that Barca highlights reel, and think about what might have happened if Valdes hadn’t been as good as he was.

Messi or Xavi would have been easy, and obvious. The matches that Messi have won with heroics are the stuff of legend. And Xavi has been inch-perfect almost every moment he’s been on the pitch. But none of it is possible without a goose egg on the other end of the scoreline. Defense had a lot to do with it, but most of the time when they broke down, Valdes was there.

Henceforth, we’ll be trying to sort out transfer nonsense, and boy is there a lot of it to sort out.

i dont agree, but i wouldn’t blame you for the picking VV.

I think other than Xavi, VV what won us the Champion’s League. AGAIN, the CL is NOT ours if it wernt for Valdes.

    But um,

    1.Xavi
    2.Messi/Iniesta
    4.Valdes/Alves.
    6. Henry/ Puyol/ Pique/ The YAYA
    10. Eto’o/Abidal
    13. Bojan/Busi/Keita

no need to kneecap people. we had 15 MVPs, Valdes was GREAT this season. I’m glad we are so spoiled with talent that we need to quibble over MMMMMVPs

Hey, I told you all it would be controversial. And it’s just my pick. Perhaps a better way of thinking about it is this: We were a little clunky, but got along okay without Iniesta. We rolled along fine with Eto’o stone-footing everything in sight. Henry was great in the side, but it kept going without him. When Messi was being rested, except for a couple of matches that he had to don the cape and save, we were okay.

Now, here’s the question: Does anyone think we would be treble champions with Pinto in the nets for the side all season?

Every player made errors this season. They’re all forgiven except for Valdes’. The man has a tough row to hoe, yet everyone here would replace him with Casillas in about two seconds. So no, Alexinho, I don’t believe that keepers get love. If they make saves, it’s because “they’re supposed to.” But if they make an error that costs a goal, it’s “let’s sign a new keeper, dammit!”

And that’s the life of Valdes. But I say this: Whether you cost a goal by not making a pass or let one past you, it’s still a goal against for the side.

David, thanks so much for the kind words, but they should really be reserved for Isaiah. This is his space, and I just help him run it. He’s set the tone of writing, the mood and this community was rocking when I showed up.

But again, thanks for the good words, and welcome. We have a good community here, in part because of the spirited and informed debate that we all like so much.

And actually, Xavi was ahead of Messi in my admittedly informal, unscientific MVP balloting. So was Pique. My list (or just the top 8):

    Valdes
    Xavi
    Messi/Iniesta
    Pique
    The Yaya
    Eto’o
    Henry
    Puyol

I completely agree with you. The Classico, Drogba (in both legs), his game against Villarreal (the 1st one) where he won 2-3 1v1s, and numerous other times where he saved the day. In second place, I’d put Xavi.

But it is a very difficult decision because everyone had moments of individual brilliance.

I don’t think that you can just use the ‘Pinto instead of Valdes’ argument.
If Hleb (our second choice right winger) played all season instead of Messi we wouldn’t have won shit. Absolutely fuck all.

Kevin… even I have to come out of my hibernation on this one.. Xavi by far was the MVP .. Valdes did his job excellently in the latter part of CL, but there was a part in the season where everything could’ve just unraveled cause of him .. agree with Ciaran’s argument above .. i think the same holds for Xavi..put someone else in the midfield and we will know the true genius of Xavi ..We’ve just gotten spoiled by his constant excellence

Long time no hear, Mat. Don’t be such a stranger, sir. And hmmm, Xavi was by far the MVP? But what about the folks who say Messi was by far the MVP? :D

It’s all our opinions, folks. For example, Xavi was awarded official MOTM in the CL Final. I thought it was Puyol, others probably could have made a case for Pique. That’s how it goes.

–Ciaran, it depends on which Hleb. If the Hleb that got off to such a good start played instead of Messi, with all else being the same, would we have won something? Good question. Xavi and Iniesta would still have been themselves, as would Henry and Eto’o, and the rest of the starting XI. Would we have been forced to find different ways to win? Probably. The treble? No way. The Liga? Quite possibly. Certainly some of those 4-0 and 6-1 scorelines would have been closer. That’s a good question, though.

It would have meant an even bigger role for Iniesta and almost certainly Krkic, with Henry as central striker occasionally as with Valencia, when Hleb provided the ball that got Henry off to the races.

–Speaking of Hleb, I hope that Jason’s right about Hleb, for his own sake. Not sure what happened to him, but it was brutal. As simple as confidence? Maybe. Trying too hard to do something great? For sure. Unfortunate, in any instance, because he was a good buy on paper. I remember Arsenal fans saying “He won’t score any goals, neener, neener!” I figured that much, but I hoped to see the passing and ball control skills that made us buy him, more in evidence.

By the by, what do people think about Aguero’s ‘come and get me’ plea by saying that he hopes that Messi will take him with him to Barca.
I don’t think that he would be the new no.9 but he certainly would be interesting in the second striker role that Henry has made his own.
Maybe 12 months too soon for Kun?

definitely xavi hands down, he’s the obvious answer but like alexinho said, the answer should come easily. he is the heart of the team and gels the squad together. his contributions are subtle, he doesn’t do any flashy runs like iniesta and messi but his role is massive. hes played in 90% of all the games and was equally impressive for both the big and small matches. valdes is probably the reason we made it to the finals but xavi played a huge part in our entire CL campaign

I totally saw this coming Kevin, :) but in all honesty i believe our MVP must be The General of our midfield, Mat saying we have been spoiled by his constant brilliance is very true. This is very much like The Yaya’s case, only Xavi IS recognized as one of the best in the world at what he does. He makes life so easy. His ability to adapt a create chemistry with literally every player around him makes him so amazing as a footballer. He can single-handedly make a striker a “genius finisher” by just offering his service. Xavi is one of the main reasons why Eto’o is even considered transfer gold.

In saying all this i never mean to take away how much our Beloved FC Barcelona have grown and created magic TOGETHER this entire year. Im just saying that Xavi is the centerpiece, the puppeteer, the man who connects all the strings with his abilities as a person and player. Xavi is without a doubt, my MVP of this season.

on another note, did you guys hear about what Aguero said? i didn’t want to rely on goal.com(for obvious reasons) so i checked out other sites too. He wants to play for the Blaugrana. I would DEFINITELY take him in as our first eleven striker, despite his age and other problems. Our midfield will allow him to score as much as he wants, the sky is the limit for that Argentine. Imagine him and Messi teaming up every game! Im getting too excited. Anyone agree or disagree?

I saw that, Ciaran. Very interesting. I think you’re absolutely right about Aguero. He definitely isn’t our main striker. But would we pay that much for a second striker? He’d be more expensive than Henry, in this market.

In other “news,” Eto’o’s agent says they have received no offers, Ribery has rejected a move to England because the weather is “too much like Germany,” this despite Bayern’s boss saying “No Ribery! No!” Oliver Kahn is warning Bayern about keeping Ribery against his will.

The Vidic rumor won’t go away, the latest number being 22m, and Eto’o’s agent (again) says that his client wouldn’t turn down a good offer from the Premiership.

And for one day, the name of our club hasn’t been linked to Ibrahimovic. :D

Xavi for me, no doubt. Take him out of the team and god knows what kind of nonsense ensues (yeah yeah, a few quiet games aside). Don’t think you can say that about any other player but open to hearing Iniesta/Messi arguments along those lines.

The goalkeeper is like the drummer in a rock band. Keith Gessen had a great article in the NYT about hockey goalies which I cannot find right now but will post when I can. To quote Ray Hudson, they’re all a bit spooky when it comes down to it. I’m kinda intrigued by your argument since I played goalkeeper for a long time, and I think Valdes has some fantastic abilities, but I can’t see him as THE one guy we couldn’t have done without.

But I have no interest in kneecapping you. I’m a lover, not a fighter.

Count me in the Xavi camp. Everything starts with him. He’s the heart of the team, the engine of the team. He masterfully controls the midfield which is central to our offense AND defense. FurthermoreM he makes everyone better.

I have to go with Xavi as well, although I can understand why you would pick VV, especially after all the critisism he has received….and I will admit I was one of those who heavily critisised him. I will gladly admit he proved me wrong and he has been improving a lot each year, especially the last 2. A lot of ppl critisize him because of his propensity for mistakes, well when I look back at the whole season I only remember one glaring mistake and that was vs Espanyol in the league when we lost. Aside from that he hasnt made any huge blunders and has made some big saves in some big games for us. In fact in the big games he never really made any mistakes so I can forgive him for his blunder against Espanyol. If you look at Casillas, Buffon, Cech and Reina, who are all cited as better keepers; they all made bigger mistakes in bigger games.

The one thing that really stands out for me with VV is his mentally and attitude which honestly cannot be faulted. He is probably our most critisized player and he handles it with grace and dignity.

The way I usually judge a keeper is simple; look back at the season, count up how many mistakes he made vs how manyt big saves he made and you have your answer. Well done VV.

On a seperate note…..what in the hell is all this talk of selling the Yaya???? Has Txiki gone mad?? Give our man crush the wages he deserves and move on dammit. He is IMO one of our most crucial players. He is our Viera. Selling him would be a HUGE mistake, even if we get Mascherano instead. Mascherano is a great player, but for us the Yaya is the man, nobody else will do. Honestly after putting in such good shifts as a CB and his ability to play more creatively when needed I am surprised they havent offered him a contract he couldnt resist. I am praying that this is just the usual negotiating tactics. Thoughts?

I have been a regular reader of this blog as it is one of the best barcelona blogs around. Thanks to Kevin/Isaiah for that.

Coming to MVP award, Valdes has been excellent but not the MVP. Barcelona won three tropies and from which, one without no involvement of Valdes.
Xavi/Iniesta have been magnificant. Xavi especially who has really pulled the strings around. But is he the one who put Barcelona on the pedastel it is on. I don’t think so.

For me, it has to be Messi as the MVP for the year. He has been the difference in so many matches and has been outstanding in League, Champions league and Copa. Take Messi out of the side and we are left with a side that is brilliant but no longer one with gods. And this year, he has delivered through the year.

I find it surprising that so many Barcelona fans are taking him for granted. After watching pretty much all the matches through the year, he has to be MVP for me.

    To ACHRAF…

Yaya isn’t on his way out, but he is one of the least paid players at the club, and he was promised an increase at the end of his first season, which he didn’t get. His agent is working hard with Barcelona to get that increase done with so he can continue, but it’s scary to think that one of our best players, my Number 3 on this list, is underrated by even our sporting directors.

He is worth every penny. We need to meet his pay increase or else our midfield looks frighteningly less intimidating.

    THE YAYA EATS BABIES haha

Amen to that, Jonathan. This is all negotiating. Guardiola and Laporta understand the value of The Yaya. Find me another center back who can score a goal like he did in the Copa Final. I won’t hold my breath while people search. Yes he’s a mid, but he was playing CB.

Kevin, do I remember correctly that you are a goalie yourself?…so I propose my own conficted-of-interest pick. As a lead-footed mid-feilder, I propose iMonument, who in staying with the team for what would undoubtably be a bit part, cemented the team chemistry that lead to the treble. Without team chemistry no treble.
…Ok I really just wanted another shot at entering “iMonument” into the Barca Offside Lexicon.

..for real, I gotta go with Messi. The come from behind victories he sparked (starting with Boca I think) showed everone this was not the same Barca.

Kevin – you’re right. You guys couldn’t have done it with out Valdes. He played an absolutely essential role in winning the treble.

    That said:
You guys couldn’t have done it with out Iniesta. He played an absolutely essential role in winning the treble.

    and

You guys couldn’t have done it with out Messi. He played an absolutely essential role in winning the treble.

    and

You guys couldn’t have done it with out Pique. He played an absolutely essential role in winning the treble.

    and

You guys couldn’t have done it with out Henry, Yaya, Puyol, Marquez, etc. They played an absolutely essential role in winning the treble.

You get my point. You can pick out moments where one player saved the team, but overall it was all of their contributions that accomplished the goal. You take a single part of the puzzle out, even Hleb, you’re not guaranteed the same result. Further more, you replace Valdes with Pinto, you’re not guaranteed the result would have been all that different. Maybe Pinto makes those saves in question. Maybe those saves and more. You’ll never know.

with all THAT said, I’d like to make my own assertion:

You guys couldn’t have done it with out Xavi. He played an absolutely essential role in winning the treble. In my estimation, he was your team’s player of the year.

    For my team? Julien Faubert.
