Welcome, Kevin!

By: Isaiah | March 27th, 2008

Our beloved Kevin is now an official member of the Offside blogging community! We haven’t yet divvied up the various regular posts, but I’m sure that we’ll be seeing an increase in news and posts in general, plus a few mega posts about whatever comes to mind. With Kevin on board, I feel more comfortable beginning a series of long posts with statistical analysis and more in depth coverage of the Barca B team and maybe a few mentions of how well the basketball team (AXA Barcelona) is doing, despite how bad the official site is at reporting on such games. Check the latest review out here.

You’ll note differing approaches to blogging from the two of us (if you haven’t already), which I hope will be a nice change of pace for everyone. Regardless, welcome once again to Kevin.

Welcome (officially), Kevin. It’s great to see you now as an official blogger of Barca. Now you can add to this already brilliant blog (even though you already kind of do). I’m looking forward to reading many more of your posts, along with Isaiah’s brilliant ones, too.

Woot! I’m as giddy as an old French striker who just helped a young’un score a goal! It’s going to be lots of fun, or I’ll die trying.

Now, to organize that Offside group meet at the Gamper match…

What the? Did anyone see the statement about Ronaldinho from the club doctors saying in effect, “Injured, my ass!” Fun little story over at Goal.com (I know….about as reliable as a 90-year-old man’s urine stream), speculating that this note was the straw that broke the camel’s back, and that Ronaldinho might NOW be going to Chelsea, for (get this….) an 18 million Euro transfer fee.

This is, of course, the day after the story, also on Goal.com, that had him going to Inter, in a deal subsidized by Nike, for a 60 million Euro transfer fee.

I dunno, but I know this, and it’s what I’ve been saying all along….he’s done at the Nou Camp. The only question is where he lands.

This, right after the Luis Fernandez book about the PSG days, and Ronaldinho’s late-night, multi-damsel booty calls. He also claims that he didn’t eat well for a professional, and didn’t mind his fitness the way that a professional should.

Get OUTTA TOWN! I’m stunned that a player with immense natural ability and an extraordinary ability to harness those gifts would be less than diligent about doing the maintenance stuff. You know, this might be the first time such a thing has EVER happened in the history of sport.

    Stop the presses.

Just posted this on the previous thread…

Bojan’s goal was Ronniesque. I propose Ronniesque as a new word to the language of football. It can be used in a multitude of ways (inventive footballing, big buck-toothed smiles or all night partying). Like, I bar hopped all night, stayed up until 6 in the morning with 10 chicas and requested 400 condoms, it was Ronniesque. It will be interesting to see what happens in the offseason this year. Who goes, Ronnie or Frank or both? And who do we bring in with the massive amount of euros recevied from Ronnie’s transfer?

I read yesterday in Sport that Cruyff said Rijkaard is staying with Barca. Is it true that when Johan Cruyff speaks people listen? I also read that the glue, the foundation so to speak, for the team this year has been Puyol, Valdes, Iniesta, Xavi and Bojan. Does anyone agree? Note the Catalan roots.

i dont know if bojan has enough minutes to be part of the glue. but the other 4, i agree. of those 4 only puyol has had any extended time out. milito and toure have been rocks as well, though the latter spent over a month in africa. but, yes, we have been fortunate that the spine (up the middle) has been pretty strong and dependable throughout the season.

It’s okay, Kevin’s mom, I mean IceMel…haha. I’m proud to have Kevin on this blog, I think he’s got some very humorous insight into things and a different approach to the team. I like that. Dialog. Which is spelled without the ue on the end cause this is Amurika.

Told you my mom would be in the house! :D

I would agree with that “glue” evaluator, Jenny, but I would add Yaya to that mucilage. Krkic hasn’t had sufficient time to be considered adequately sticky, yet.

Cruyff is speaking out of his butt about Rijkaard. Note the silence from Laporta and, more importantly, Txiki (okay, as an aside, I want a name like that. It’s SO cool. It might just be the “x” sitting at the beginning there, or the fact that it’s such fun to say, but there it is.).

If we don’t get silver this season, Rijkaard is going down faster than a low-rent ‘ho. The Copa can be forgiven, since that’s a consolation prize, and a way for teams on the edge to winnow their way into Europe without having to worry about beating up on the big boys, who don’t really take it all that seriously. He’s probably even relieved to be out of the Copa.

The league and Champions League are a whole ‘nother matter. I say he has to win at least one, but probably both, to keep his job. Further, if Villarreal leapfrog us, finishing second to the Evil Empire, and we don’t win CL, Curly Top will be run out of town on an besplintered Catalan rail, and Barcelona vendors who sell funky, verging-on-ugly sportcoats will weep into their Barca Chips.

Impossible, you say? Don’t forget that Villarreal have the advantage of not being us or the Evil Empire, so they don’t get teams’ best games. Look at Almeria. They tied us, then went down like dogs to Osasuna, a side below them in the table.

Villarreal, on the other hand, is just another Liga side. Teams will play hard against them, but not all-out. Henry was right. No more losses. Even ties are unacceptable. Puttin’ the boot in against Valladolid was one of life’s great “Duh!” moments. Betis will show how serious we are about this championship thing.

What helps is that Villarreal have a tough run of matches coming up: Atletico, Sevilla, Almeria, a respite with Valladolid, then Betis.

The EE get: Sevilla, then away to Mallorca, then Murcia and Racing and Bilbao.

We have: Betis, Getafe, Recre, Espanyol and Deportivo. Ouch. In addition, we have the Schalke matches in the Champions League mixed in there.

Now, if it comes down to the last two matches, I like our chances, v Murcia and Mallorca.

And again, thanks for the kind welcomes, everyone. Isaiah has set up a brilliant space for us all, and I’m just happy to be skating along on his coattails. :D

in the “of course it would turn out this way” department:

the league has listened to Betis’ appeal and has temporarily suspended the stadium ban, meaning that Barca will play at Betis home stadium, and the game will be open to fans.

waiting for the preview on this game, kxevin and isaiah! only 24 hours away…goodie!

Uh, oh. Watch out for flying missiles, and I’m only partly kidding.

I’ll be curious to see how Abidal will play in the central role. He’s played everywhere on the defense for Les Bleus, so I’m pretty comfortable with that notion.

Isaiah is on the preview case, I’ll be doing the review. But I’ll say this: We’d better put the boot in early, and often. Two goals before halftime, and we’re home free. I’d figure out some way to get Henry, Krkic and Eto’o out there, with an aggressive Iniesta pushing up from midfield. Not quite a 4-2-4, but no screwing around. I’ll leave the rest to Isaiah.
