And the answer is…Bayern.
By: Kevin | March 20th, 2009
This one will be brief, but the draw and the road to the finals has been decided:
We get Bayern in the quarters, Liverpool or Chelsea in the semis, and we’ll see in the finals. Is anybody else excited about this? I think that it could have been better in that we could have drawn Porto, but Bayern is right up there on my wish list.
Don’t let that 12-1 aggregate hammering of Sporting delude you. Yes, the Bundesliga is a real league now. They’ve really stepped up their game over there. But Bayern is still a notch below us, as are most teams in the world. We have better attackers, better ball movement, a better defense … we even smell better after a workout.
Not to discount the danger. Luca Toni is the real deal. We’ll need to get some elevator shoes for Pique when he is tasked with heading away any ball that they try to Route 1 to that big striker of theirs.
But another reason I’m pretty happy about drawing Bayern is that they can’t really hurt us on the wings, which will give our French Greyhound a chance to fully recover. I’ll leave everyone the chance to get more in depth in the blizzard of comments, but I just don’t see their wingers giving us that much trouble, particuarly as Ribery comes bombing at teams out of the midfield.
Oh. Yeah. Ribery. Cut off his available supply, and he founders, as he just isn’t the kind of guy (Sporting’s sieve notwithstanding) to break down a defense and knock in a goal all by his lonesome.
And lest we forget, Bayern isn’t even top of Bundesliga at present, and have had some dodgy performances, as have we.
It should present some interesting football, and one significant worry: Their lads like to shoot from the outside, particularly Altintop. Podolski and Schweinsteiger are also good at that. So Valdes had better break out the big gloves.
After that, we get the winner of the Chelsea/Liverpool tie. Anyone who is automatically thinking “Liverpool” might want to re-think some stuff. Yes, the Reds had the Blues’ number earlier this season, but Hiddink has Chelski playing with some mojo. That’s going to be a very low-scoring tie. It might even be something crazy like a 1-0 aggregate for the winner.
Frankly, I think that we can beat either team, particularly given that our defense will be whole by then, and provided we don’t sustain any other critical injuries.
Mind you, I’d also like to see a bit of distance in the Liga standings (man, could we use the 12-point cushion now) so that can rest key players, and prioritize.
Still. Be that as it may, our opponent in the final is most likely going to be Manchester United, as they are in the draw side with Porto, Arsenal and Villarreal. All should be easy wins for that side.
We have the more difficult road, which will make our eventual victory all the more sweet.

He’s a good troll, though. Great for when the team has good possession of the ball and the opposing team is frustrated. They take it out on him and that earns them yellows.

We’ve drawn once and lost 3 times against Bayern Munich. In the UEFA-Cup it was a draw and a loss, the last meeting in the CL was 98/99 (groupstage) and we lost both matches. I think it was the year of ManUtd’s incredible comeback.
If you put all 4 matches together, the scoreline is 4-7 against us.Nevertheless those matches are quite a while ago. We also faced them in the “Beckenbauer Pokal” (summer 2007) which we won 1-0 by a goal from Messi.

Well i wished we got Bayern Munich since they’re kinda easy but kinda hard.We will definitely have midfield domination and our attackers should have them to busy to attack since their defense isn’t all that but I’m glad we draw them since we can see them live on Goltv.

to be fair, the bayern team we lost to was a great team, guys like Kahn ,Matthäus, Effenberg and other scarily efficient german players were still playing. times have changed since then.

In fairness to GolTV, it might be the big-eared, braying jackasses who run the Liga and its TV rights.
For the unfamiliar, GolTV is presently negotiating with the Liga for broadcast rights again, and have rather shamefully lowballed the folks. This might (or might not) affect what matches they are allowed to show. The Liga folks know that Barca matches are very desirable. There’s also the Fox Soccer specter looming its ugly head.
If I understand it correctly, GolTV is a third-party broadcaster, which is to say they pick up the broadcast from the authorized broadcaster, if that makes sense (rather than broadcasting it themselves). It’s almost like a bar negotiating a package with an entity such as Setanta, but on a much larger scale.
Should this nonsense continue and GolTV lose out on our precious La Liga, we U.S. folks could be sucking hind teat, either seeing Barca matches delayed via BarcaTV on Fox Soccer, or via jerky, grainy Web feed. Yikes!

It seems like GolTV sucks at negotiating because they muffed their deal with Disk Network, too.
But then again, the companies from Spain aren’t much better, right? So it could be a combination of the two.
It’s probably like watching the Three Stooges, except it’s not funny and we’re watching it on a crappy web feed.

Hi all, I just discovered this site and I’m happy I finally have an English language blog devoted to FCB to help me procrastinate.
As for the tie itself, I was asking a friend of mine who’s a Bayern fan for more info on the team since I’ve only watched about 135 minutes of them this year. My first question to him was whether or not Bayern are the type of team capable of making football look like rugby, i.e. make it rough and tumble. I asked this because the only teams that have given Barca trouble all year are the teams that have taken it to them physically. His response was basically no.
My second question to him was how he anticipates Bayern reacting to be denied possession. Many top-class teams, by definition, are used to keeping the ball more than their opponents. How do they react when they are the ones who’re chasing shadows? I asked this because one of the reasons for last year’s loss to ManU was that they (Man U) did not get frustrated at not having possession and simply chose to bide their time, which teams like Lyon and Arsenal are not capable of doing. My friend was of the opinion that they would struggle in this respect too.
However, and this is the key for me, you can’t discount the second-leg-away factor. I think that point alone makes it an even tie; if the second leg was at the Camp Nou, FCB would be easy favorites.
But it should be fun either way.

It’s a pleasure to find a beautiful blog like this one, very critical and to the point, I’m a new fan that is loving it.
Getting to business, I read a few comments and realized that we are not appreciating the potential magnitude of the talent in Bayern Munich. Don’t take me wrong, I think we are a better team as individuals (most of the team) and when we play as a whole. But lets take a look at their starting roster,
Defense:
Rensing, excellent goal keeper. RB: Oddo: Italian right back international. CB: Lucio (Brazil) Demechellis (Argentine) LB: Lahm (Germany). Very strong defensive line up which is tall and has lots of experience, besides Massimo Oddo, the other three are starters and leaders in their national teams. Also, Lucio and Demechellis are very dangerous from set pieces.Midfield. RW: Schweinstenger (Germany) CM: Van Bommel (Holland) Ze Roberto (Ex Brazil) LW: Ribery (France)
Starters and stars, for both country and club, besides Van Bommel because of personal problems with the Holland coach… Van Bommel and Ze roberto are excellent holding midfielders while ribery and Schweinstenger are very strong in terms of free kicks, distant shooting, Play making, and headers for Schweinstenger too.Strikers: Luca Toni (Italy) Podolski (Germany)…Thank god Klose is out for the season as he is an excellent player which can cause huge threats.
As you see from their roster, they all have excellent resumes, have vast experiences internationally and will be very highly motivated to play against the strongest force in world football which I humbly think is FCB! We must not hide the fact that they are a good team, a team of champions that have won many things throughout the years, and can certainly spice things up for Barcelona. I also think that they can get very physical which is a problem that we have in FCB. Another obvious threat that they cause is their set pieces, they are strong and tall, and have a great return from corners and fouls in the dangerous areas. They have also been a team that scored many calls this season coming from counter attacks. Yes they are not consistent in the Bundes Liga, but they have proved otherwise in the Champions League and they are taking it very seriously. Also I think that our main threat in the game will be our selves, as I’m afraid of two things, and they are the opposite, the first is that we get very cautious because of the disillusion of Bayerns result with Sporting, and the other, is that we might pay a hefty price for having the first leg at home and that we get too anxious in attack and try to score that we might forget our backline and lose concentration. I think the build up for the game is very important, in terms of league performance and how vital it is that we get into the CL game after winning a few league games.

We face Real Valladolid away and Recreativo Huelva at home before the respective Bayern-match.
If we win against Malaga this sunday, Pep could use a kind of B+ team against both of them to save energy from the most important players for the UCL tie. I think we couldn’t have been handed a better build up and compared to Bayern Munich, we could allow to slip up in La Liga (at least one match – already assuming a win against Malaga) while Bayern are still 4 points behind and share the 2nd place with Wolfsburg and Hamburg which means they could even still fail to qualify for UCL. So, the pressure is on Munich’s side. Their build up is also going to be a lot harder as they travel to Wolfsburg on April, 4th which will be a MUST win for the Bavarians without Klose and possibly Luca Toni who travelled to Italy for rehab.
Taking all this into account, I am quite certain now that we will prevail. The only fear left is an injury crisis that might occure due to the international duties (Spain against Turkey twice… I really hope Iniesta and Xavi stay fit).Posted from

Holy crap im looking at our fixture list. If we are planning to go to the semis, then we will play 2 games a week for 6 weeks in a row.

I think this draw will be more tricky. Bayern will play more of an attacking football which makes the first leg at Camp Nou very crucial. We have to get atleast a two goal lead and ho[pefully without conceding.
I think Toni and Klose both are injured and may not be available for Barca clash. Podolski, Ribery, Schweinsteiger and Lahm then going to be the key.

@ Josh,
If you count the international matches it will be 2 games a week for 7 weeks in a row. The only week without a midweek game until the end of the season is betweeen May, 17 and May, 24 IF we make it to the CL final. In other words, the players have only the upcoming week left to reload their batteries (those who are not on international duty have one week more left)…
That’s insane, during these 7 weeks we have the CL quarter- and semi-finals, the Copa del Rey final and La Liga matches vs. Sevilla, Valencia, Real Madrid and Villarreal. If Barca wins the treble this season, it is of an unimaginable value and of the most difficult effort ever

omg, this makes 9 really tough matches in 7 weeks: 2 times against Bayern, 2 times against Liverpool (or Chelsea), Copa del Rey Final, Sevilla, Valencia, Real Madrid and Villarreal. May the god of football be with us!

yup those are some really tough games back to back but like last time when this happened Pep made the best out of it and we got full points so i believe he will do the same and this is when we will see the raw brilliance of our team.

dam, pique might be out for this one. If he is, that means we have to use caceras and maybe even sanchez.

i would rather play a team that comes out and attacks than a team that huddles in a defensive crouch and tries to hit on the break. let’s face it: we have the best attack in world club football. if Bayern wants to try to match our firepower all credit to them as that should make for a absolutely cracking game, but i don’t expect them to be up to that standard. yes they are a good side on paper, and Ribery is definitely a game-changing player, but i just can’t see them out-attacking us if we’re anything close to on form (as we have been the past couple of games).

I kinda doubt Toni will be much of a factor as hes only half-fit having been unable to train since his Achilles tendon injury

If by some miracle we manage to win the treble it will be an accomplishment beyond words because that is one crazy run of games. We have a very tough route to the CL final, we have a tough Copa final to play AND Madrid are going to chase us till the end. Would feel a hell of a lot more comfortable if we can improve on our lead by the time this run begins.
Realistically i do not expect us to win all 3, i think we have the best team in the world, but i am also a realist and there are just too many factors going against us winning everything. Maybe if all the games squeezed between the quarters, the semis and the final weren’t some of the toughest games in the league. But hey, lets give it our all and if we go get a bit of luck our way and we do manage all 3….well we will have witnessed a truly great team being born!

Looks like Utd are going through their blip at a very bad time. They just lost 2-0 to fulham, which puts them just 4 points ahead of Liverpool who play tomorrow. This is VERY VERY good for us if we can keep our lead on MAdrid healthy. It means that Chelsea, Utd and Pool will all be fighting for the league come the quarters and the semis. Which means less rest for them both mentally and physically. Utd probably have the best squad to deal with it, and i would expect them to bounce back after a few games, just like we did. If Liverpool can get their act together though and start winning in the league it keeps things tight.

If Liverpool wins tomorrow against Aston Villa – which will be everything but easy – they are 4 points behind ManUtd (assuming that Manchester wins their postponed match against Portsmouth).
Nevertheless the team that was praised as “invinvicble” by the media has shown human weaknesses during the last days. They also lost Scholes and Rooney to a red card, which means they’ll have to play without them and Vidic against Aston Villa next weekend. Imagine they don’t get 3 points out of it, THEN ManUtd is definitely in trouble.
But first of all Liverpool has to take advantage of their current low. Chelsea already failed to do so, today’s match was far away from an impressive performance and resulted in a 1-0 loss @ Tottenham…Posted from
