Barcelona win, still out of the Champions League

By: Isaiah | March 6th, 2007

Despite winning 0-1 at Anfield, Barcelona have been eliminated from the Champions League by Liverpool. Kudos to the Scousers for taking chances and defending well against a desperate and imaginative Barcelona side. Gudjohnsen grabbed the only goal, defying my criticism of him. Ronaldinho hit the post, too, but it just wasn’t to be for the Blaugrana. And to think, I got so close with the lineup! The score, on the other hand, I got wrong.

Much more later, when I’ve had a chance to digest it all. If there’s a bright side, well, we can now focus entirely on the league title, which is still very winnable. For starters, we’ve got El Clasico on Saturday!

I feel gutted. In all honesty, it could have been worse. If Riise and Sissoko had converted their chances, we’d have been two goals down in the first half.

I’m surprised at Rijkaard — he should have taken Messi off at the hour mark (the kid barely played) and brought Gudjonssen on at least 15 minutes earlier than he did.

Yes, it’s easy to second-guess the manager, but the man does have a tendency to wait too long before making changes.

We’d better thump Madrid on Saturday, or that’s the season for us.

    Barcelona shall rise again.

It’s not the first time we’ve been eliminated from the tournament, and it won’t be the last :]

Next year, the team will REALLY want it!!

Well, what else can we do but pick ourselves up and move on? A total focus on the title is now vitally important – after all, we’re still a point behind and the next few league games are pretty difficult. No more dropped points.

(I was going to express my delight at Guddy’s goal, but then he had to go and open his big mouth. No playing time for him in El Clasico, then.)
