By: Isaiah | May 27th, 2009

Here it is, the final, the culmination of a season that has brought us 2 titles already. Barcelona versus Manchester United. This is for all the marbles in the European soccer world. This is what we play for. This. Is. It.

Bring it.

Check out my “interviews” at the Canadian Stretford End and the ManU Offside. Go read those while you “patiently” wait for the kickoff.

Barça: Valdés, Puyol, Touré, Piqué, Sylvinho, Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Etoo, Henry
ManU: Van der Sar, O’Shea, Rio Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Carrick, Anderson, Giggs, Park, Rooney, Cronaldo

just caught the game…any madridista would kill for either xavi or iniesta. you fans are insanely fortunate to have the 2 best playmakers in the world playing for you at the same time in the same team.

well done on the victory, couldn’t have taken the smugness from the EPL fans if ManU won. hopefully our summer campaign has some sort of success and we make things a bit tougher for you.

The other shoe drops (pun fully intended w/r/t messi’s goal celebration)–the non-Sid-Lowe Guardian tonight:

England’s best defence shattered by greatest attack on the planet

Barcelona’s dismantling of United highlighted the gulf between the Premier League’s best and the special abilities of Messi and his team-mates

Conventional wisdom suggests that Manchester United’s defence is the rock on which their serial title successes have been built, the reliable platform that allows all the pyrotechnics up front to take place.

That might be the case in the Premier League, though the theory was made to look as shaky as some of the United defending by the superbly mobile and bewitchingly ingenious Barcelona attack. Put simply, United do not have to defend against players as good as Lionel Messi and Andrés Iniesta back at home, and the former in particular was so hard to pin down here that he left Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic feeling like Billy Wright after meeting the Magyars.

GREAT quote. does that mean he thinks he’s 2nd, 3rd, and 4th best?

ah, that guy. he could be a supreme ass for 30 more years and i’d never get tired of hating him.

I feel a little guilty. I feel I should be jumping around in ecstasy BUT I know this pleasant glow is going to last a lot longer.

I LOVE BARÇA. I LOVE THE WAY WE PLAYED THROUGHOUT THIS SEASON. I WOULD HAVE LOVED THE TEAM HAD WE LOST. BUT WE WON AND THE PRIDE I CAN TAKE IN MY AFFECTION IS SOMETHING THAT CANNOT BE MATCHED !

Note to Puyol : Please let Xavi and Messi hold the trophy a little longer(and ok, Henry too)… coz these guys were reluctant to take credit in 2006 believing they had played little part in the truimph. Well, humble as they are, even they have to acknowledge their influence this time.

Isn’t it fitting that the goals were scored by our most regular scorers this season Eto’o and Messi, the assist were provided by the most regular in this aspect, Iniesta and Xavi ?

Forgive my vindictiveness, but where are all you Eto’o haters, Ibra lovers? Was that another tap in that he scored ?

I have been similarly critical of Valdes but I will admit that he has saved us now and before, his reflex saves are awesome even if he still could do more on crosses and corners and in organising the defence but just for the vital role he has played I will no longer advocate selling him.

Let us not knock the contributions made by each player coz when Barça wins it is no Cronaldo or Messi that is responsible but the unified effort, where each player has the humility to believe in and work for each other . Yes, dont forget that even Guddy and Sylvinho and Caceres and Bojan (though maybe not Hleb) have played vital roles this season.

Barça couldn’t have made a better decision than appointing Guardiola as manager. Hope he remains in charge until Xavi is ready to take over. Thanks to the members for electing Laporta and not backing Rosell who surely would have taken the more practical decision of appointing Mourinho.

    From the same match report:

Barcelona did succeed in lulling United into a false sense of security, however, for when they put together their first meaningful attack after 10 minutes the defensive line in front of Van der Sar crumbled alarmingly to allow the goalkeeper to be beaten at his near post. First Michael Carrick was guilty of not closing down Iniesta quickly enough, then Vidic and Carrick failed to prevent Eto’o bearing down on goal, though in fairness once Eto’o received Iniesta’s pass in a good position he was in no mood to be stopped.

And that happened not just then but throughout the game, I say, because Manchester United fundamentally did not take Iniesta all that seriously.

Alexinho, the quote is actually by Wayne Rooney:

“It is a big disappointment but Barcelona were the better team.”
“Barcelona scored two good goals and unfortunately for us, they came at good times. That made it very difficult for us.

“Barcelona are a brilliant team. Andres Iniesta is the best player in the world in my opinion. If you don’t take your chances against them, they will punish you and that is what has happened.

“It is very disappointing and the feeling at the moment is not a good one. We are hurting. But we have to forget it and look forward to next season.”

    -Wayne Rooney

oh, well that’s not as hilarious then. i’ve always appreciated rooney’s heart and passion, even if it gets him in trouble at times. i suppose ronaldo still thinks he’s the best. sigh.

“The Catalan threats trip off the tongue. Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto’o, Thierry Henry, Xavi. For a footballing scholar like Ferguson, it is enough to get the hair standing up on the back of his neck. As an opposition manager, it is the stuff of nightmares.”

“But ask the wily Red Devils chief who the dangerman is and the answer is none of the above. Instead, it is the figure who broke Chelsea hearts with his injury-time winner at Stamford Bridge last month.”

“Andres Iniesta is a fantastic footballer,” said Ferguson.
“He makes Barcelona work in midfield. I don’t think he ever gives the ball away
    ——————————————————

After SAF warned his team that Iniesta would be a big threat, United allowed Iniesta to scurry right through them and put Eto’o in a great position.

I am absolutely sure that SAF unleashed a verbal lambasting at them. Not to say that Xavi and Iniesta played out of this world (ok, yes they did), but it was more that ManU failed to stifle them, or put up any kind of resistance.

Our midfield commited one foul (commited by Busi of course.)

That should show Chelsea how real men command a midfield. With passing flair, not with brute force.
