CL Preview: Barça – Shakhtar, Tuesday 2:45pmEST, ESPN Deportes

By: Isaiah | December 8th, 2008

So we beat Valencia on Saturday to move 6 points clear of 2nd-placed Villarreal (35pts-29pts), pushed our goals scored to 44 in 14 games (3.14 per game), and thanks to our clean sheet dropped our goals allowed to 0.64 per game (9 in 14 games). Holy crapola. Now, before we play Real Madrid in El Clásico, we’ve got our final Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk.

We beat them last time in a Messi-inspired thriller that left even Kevin grasping at imagery and metaphors, though not words in general. I was on a business trip then and damned lucky to catch the match. This time around I think I’ll be in the comfortable confines of my home with the cat wondering why I’m home so early and disturbing her usual resting place with my yells.

As I wrote in the comments of Kevin’s preview of that game,

I thought Shaktar were being extraordinarily cynical/lame/unsporting when they asked for the ball back before Messi’s first goal. If the player who was injured was injured during the play that the ball was kicked out on, how can anyone mean to kick it out for them? It was just a clearance and it’s not Barcelona’s fault that they stopped playing. Never. Stop. Playing. All teams should be sporting, but you can’t take it too far.

2-2 going into the 80th minute would have been an acceptable scoreline for me, though; Valdes made a terrific save against Ilsinho in the first half that I was positive was going into the back of the net. Nice job, Valdes! The second is not his fault whatsoever (no more than Messi’s second was Pyatov’s fault).

If this were a real match rather than a final hurrah in the group stage, I would probably think they’d be coming in with cleats up and teeth bared and that Yaya would take those cleats and teeth and place them in the nearest Shakhtar…okay that was about get too graphic for this family-oriented site, but you get the picture. That’s the thing, though: it’s not a real match because we’re assured of first place in the group no matter what happens not only in our match, but also in the Sporting CP-Basel match. No matter that Shakhtar put 5 on Basel last time around, they’re still parachuting to UEFA.

Maybe they’ll come in hard in revenge for our win in their stadium, but I don’t know what that would get them other than red cards and ire. For our part, we’ve got a squad list that consists of a lot of subs:

Jorquera, Pinto, Cáceres, Piqué, Sylvinho, Abidal, Gudjohnsen, Busquets, Keita, Hleb, Bojan, Henry, Pedro, Víctor Sánchez, Víctor Vázquez, Botía, Abraham, Xavi Torres.

So, to put it another way, we’re resting Valdes, Alves, Puyol, Marquez, Toure, Xavi (Hernandez), Eto’o, and Messi. That’s an 8-man mega unit if there ever was one. Perhaps they’re going to start forcing us to play that way (a 3-2-2) just to make things fair.

Do you know who Botía and Xavi Torres are? I don’t. Check ‘em out in training. They’re no longer wearing their Més gear, so perhaps that thing is done. I loved seeing the billboards in the background for it during the Valencia match, by the way.

If you don’t follow Barça Atlètic, feel free to check out their official page. Apparently they’re on a 7-game unbeaten streak and are 11th in their division (18 points behind leaders Villarreal B — compare that to 11th placed Malaga being 17 points behind us in the Primera). Perhaps our famous cantera is finally getting back to form in terms of on-the-field performances rather than simply supplying us, Barnum and Bailey style, with the greatest show on earth.*

Here’s my question, though: Where is Gai Assulin? Is he still too young at 17 to bring up to the first team? He played 2 weeks ago against Alzira on November 30 (though I don’t know if he played against Ontinyent on Saturday). Perhaps Guardiola, who coached him last year, doesn’t have the confidence in him that so many others do, or perhaps he doesn’t feel the need to rush the kid into the fray simply for the sake of doing so. We do have Bojan, Pedro, Henry, and Víctor Vázquez all up front, though why not rest Henry and put in Gai as a late sub? I don’t know about that, but I know I trust in Guardiola. It’s merely some food for thought.

So we’ll have a young team out there for a meaningless game. The older guys who get stuck on the field with them might not really bother to show up, but that’s bad form. The “kids” should be out to prove themselves and get some serious match time, so hopefully we’ll see some serious talent on display. Bojan specifically needs to use the last game as a springboard to propel him into the lofty heights of awesomedom where we know he can happily reside. He needs to work hard and make his chances count rather than ineffectively balloon the ball over the bar for the hundredth time.

Who will start? I don’t know. What will happen? I don’t know. So, what use am I? Well, I’m here to tell you the official predictions.

Starting lineup: Pinto, Victor Sanchez, Pique, Caceres, Abidal, Busquets, Keita, Hleb, Bojan, Pedro, Henry.

Official score prediction: 1-1. Sorry, Kevin, your 2nd time in the Camp Nou won’t be as cool.

And just in case you were wondering, yes, tis the season to get your Barack Obama caganer. What’s a caganer? Look no farther.

—–
*For those of you who don’t know or with short memories, our cantera has brought us: Valdes, Puyol, Pique, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Bojan, Pedro, and Busquets as well as Jorquera, Víctor Sánchez, Víctor Vázquez, Botía, Abraham, and Xavi Torres. Whether or not some of those last ones are worth mentioning is up to others who have seen them play, but they’re definitely not contributors at this point (only Víctor Sánchez has played a game for the first team this season and Jorquera is the only one with any other first team experience). We also produced Cesc Fabregas and like a billion other awesome players. I’m going to take credit for LeBron James, for one. And Wayne Gretzky. We’re so cool.

as a last word on the messi thing, remember against sevilla, he seemed to be asleep for 60 mins, just lurking in the shadows, perhaps waiting for them to tire or whatever but when they were least expecting it he pounced and ripped them apart liked a starved lion.

perhaps that was what he was trying to do again but realised (to extend the metaphor) durin ghte valencia game that you can only fit so many mouths around the prey’s neck and in this case it was henry.

i can remember on a few occasions when henry even tried to play messi through on a couple of plays, perhaps for him to get a piece of the action, but messi just rushed them or pushed them wide.

remember against getafe where kevin gave bojan something like a 2 or a 3. in reality, if you put bojan in another team for example, hull city, and he played like that, it would have been a marvellous performance and people wouldnt speak badly of him. but remember he is playing for arguably the best team in the world at the moment, even alex ferguson is scared to face us (damn right, bring on manyoo!! its revenge time!). so messi is not just playing for barca who we all know have standard as high as the clouds, but he is also messi. i shenry played like that we would just say, oh well another crap performance by henry, or if it was busquets (around the same age as messi) we would say he s young and inexperienced. but we have come to expect so much from our little messiah that when he puts in a performance like this one against a seriously subdued valencia where he could have had a handful of goals, we are left with a bad taste in my mouth.

half way into the first half against valencia i actually went to the barca official site to check the lineups to see if messi was actually on the field. the first time i really noticed him he was being fouled by del horno or that other aggressive defender. sure he made a few shots on goal and he made some nice runs, but thats his job. we expect more than that, we expect many shots on goal, a few of them to go in, his runs to end in passes or shots not just tackles.
perhaps he was closed down by the valencian defence thinking he was the danger man leaving henry free to waltz his way into all cules’ hearts once and for all.
who knows what pep had said to them, what messi’s role really was that night.

but messi is judged by his own standards, not a calculated team average standard. messi underperformed and therefore if his ratings start at 5 and go up or down depending on his performance, surely then they should go down if he UNDERperformed? i, like most of you, have a very big man-crush on messi, always have, always will, and it hurts me to say these things about him, but we have to face facts. just because we won doesnt exempt the team from criticism. thats how people improve. even pep says all the time, that despite winning there are still things we can improve on, and god only help those who face us if we do improve.

but all in all, messi was underwhelming and perhaps a rating of 2 is harsh, perhaps it isnt, maybe he needs a 3 or a 4, but whatever it is it should be 5 because you could even see his frustration on his face when he left the pitch, he wanted to stay on to make up for it. he knew he was sub-par. if everyone always told messi, dont worry, it okay, here, have a nice rating so you dont feel sad or upset and go cry on the bench like bojan did, then he would think he is perfect and would not have to improve and god-forbid, he would get delusions of grandeur like one cristian ronaldo (see goal.com for his self-substitution). messi needs criticism so he realises what he needs to fix and can identify when he has had a bad game.

sorry to post so much here but i feel that i can see both sides of the argument and that both sides need to realise each others thinking and positioning.

ok so it seems drenthe is also out for el clasico, who does that leave? i am going to try to formulate their possible starting 11, feel free to add to it:

defence: ramos, cannvaro, slgado and marcelo.

now ramos is the business but he is like alves going forward all the time and leaves the other three to defend our lethal counter attacks, cannavaro is over the hill and should reitre, same with salgado and even the madridistas are calling for marcelos head, this should be a good one.

midfield: guti, van der vaart and gago

gago is hot and cold but will easily be shut down by yaya, xavi and co. van der vaart started well for EE but has lost all his form to the point of being subbed at half time yesterday. guti too is hot or cold but should be marked none the less.

    forwards: raul, higuain, saviola/buenno

bueno is their equivalent of our pedro, so i wouldnt be too concerned with him and he likley wont start. i wan t saviola so he can be booed and thereis no way he will step up, raul is also over the hill and should get out of the team and make way for new talent, he just takes up space and higuain is the one i am most, but not that much, worried about. but i think he doesnt have the experience to beat us, plus he relies on service of others and others to whom he can play to.

they are missing: sneijder, diarra, drenthe, torres, heinze (i wanted him to play so yaya could destroy him), van nistelrroy, pepe and whoever else.

Hey, Isaiah. I don’t know why but I’m getting curious about how that “graphic picture” looks like – the one just beside the Yaya with teeth out and cleats up picture. The link doesn’t seem to work so would you mind linking it again?

It’s so damn useless but I just remembered your picture of some country’s “Fall Season” comparing it to Guddy or Yaya. I’m not sure which one. Your links just crack me up and makes me wonder what goes on in your head. Lol.

The seriousness of Drenthe’s injury isn’t clear yet; he may well play. Metzelder is still there, but has also been hurt.

    So…

Pepe, Heinze, Marcelo, Robben, Drenthe, Sneijder, De la Red, Diarra, Van Nistelrooy. All currently ruled out for Saturday’s match, with Torres a question mark (he’s currently recovering from an injury he picked up in the 36th minute against Getafe).

Even as Cules, you guys have to be at least a little disappointed. I’m a Madridista, but I was pissed last year that Deco, Eto’o and Ronaldinho weren’t part of the team that Madrid played in the last clasico, and equally frustrated that Messi wasn’t fit for the previous one. When these two teams meet, I want to see full fire power on display, so that the team that wins gets full enjoyment from beating the rival’s best XI.

I don’t want to sound like I’m sandbagging or making excuses. Madrid still have plenty of talent, and if they come out to play it will still be a strongly contested match. But being without the services of Pepe, Diarra, Sneijder, Robben and van Nistelrooy means that you’ll be playing a lot of second and even third choice starters.

(If Torres is fit, I predict a back line of Salgado, Ramos, Cannavaro and Torres. Without Torres, we might see Chema Antón or even Christoph Metzelder line up as left back. Javi Garcia may be picked to pair up with Gago and add more defense to the midfield, though I doubt it.)

Here’s my guess at their line=up

    Fullbacks: Salgado and Miguel Torres
    Centerbacks: Sergio Ramos and Cannavaro

Ramos is their best fullback but, given their injuries, putting him there would mean starting Metzelder who has been horrible this year (he pretty much single handedly cost them the series against Real Union). So this line-up is pretty much their only option unless they start a raw canterano or move Drenthe (if he’s healthy) to fullback. Torres is a gritty but average player. Almost no offense, decent enough tackling but a propensity to be out of postion. Salgado is burnt toast. Messi, Alves, Abidal, and Henry are licking their chops.

    Midfield:

    Sure Starters:
Gago- He is their only still healthy defensive mid fielder besides Javi Garcia who is rawer than sushi. A good player IMO but tends to get over emotional.

Guti- Their most balanced midfielder right now. We know he is the very definition of inconsistency but he always steps up against Barcelona.

    Possible Starters

Van der Vaart or Snejider (he MIGHT be ready to go according to Marca)- They play pretty much the same style and postion. Attacking midfielders who aren’t very good defenders (VDV can put in effort sometimes but that usually just gets him a yellow).

Javi Garcia- It wouldnt surprise me to see Bernd get defensive and play ugly football. He might put in the very raw but big and strong Garcia with Gago, Guti, and VDV/Sneijder to flood the midfield instead of using a 4-3-3 with no real wingers.
    Front Line-

Higuain- Their best player right now besides Robben (who wont play). Period. I love this guy as a player but thankfully for us, Schuster’s always playing him out of his natural position. He is a pure forward but Bernd insists on trying to convert him into a winger.

Raul- Old and slow but dangerous and crafty. We know him.

    Saviola/Bueno

    Conclusion-

I would guess a 4-4-2 instead of the 4-3-3 if Drenthe’s out. They dont have enough wing players up front to play a trident with this scenario and Bernd’s gonna be scared of our offense. I see Gago/Garcia/Guti/VDV in the middle with Raul at the 9 and Higuain as the 10.

@John- Damn. You pretty much read my mind and beat me to the punch. Didn’t know Torres was injured. I would be on Metzelder and Cannavaro in the middle and Ramos and Salgado at fullback if Torres is out given Bernd’ well known “love” of inexperienced canterano. I think Anton’s not playing. Metzelder is a clumsy putz. That back line is gonna be a sieve. Makes me think RM is gonna camp out in the back an play ugly even more. Good chance of a Javi Garcia sighting IMO.

Gai can’t play for the first team until his citizenship issues get sorted out. It’s like the problem Messi had back in 2005. So it’s not a matter of Guardiola not trusting him but being stopped by bureaucracy.

(Speaking of Messi and 2005, remember those good old days? Back when we piled our unreasonable expectations on Ronnie instead of him?)

Linda, thanks for that tidbit. I thought the citizenship thing had been cleared up, but I also didn’t know we were maxed out on our non-EU roster spots.

Toure, Caceres, and Hleb…I thought you got 5? Or is it just 3?

I also didn’t consider CL rosters. Can’t you only use a certain number of players?

Hey Somebody please tell me that everything is going to be ok. Besides Barca’s current great form and madrid’s poor one I keep having recurring night mares of a madrid 5-0 win at the Camp Nou Dream Team style. And Guardiola is smoking weed on the sidelines with Rijkard, while crap face Raul does a victory dance. It’s killing me! I know that if we give our all we will win at least that is what my head says. But my gut says different and like Stephen Colbert I usually just listen to my gut.
