Schalke 0 – 1 Barcelona: HUUUUUYY edition

By: Isaiah | April 1st, 2008

Well, folks, I’m happy to be wrong here. I predicted we’d draw 1-1 and goddamn did we get close to drawing or losing, but somehow came out on top. I got home from work in what turned out to be the 10th minute of the rebroadcast and was immediately greeted with the words, “Barcelona is dominating,” coming from the commentator. Only moments later Iniesta fed Henry, I up on my feet thinking it was going to be a curler to the far post like in the Celtic game, then I saw the ball be enveloped by the keeper, it popped out, I half-mouthed half-screamed something about the back post, Henry flicked it to Bojan and it was 0-1.

And that’s all she wrote. Right?

Well…not really. After that there were really any chances for Barca and Schalke let us off the hook in the second half with some atrocious finishing. What was 0-1 could easily have been 3-1 to them and only by the grace of…well I’m not even sure what, but by the grace of something the team returns to Spain with a massive advantage as well as with its coach.

Despite being outshot 24 to 5 (holy balls!), Barcelona escapes with a victory. 59% possession didn’t translate into very many chances, though mostly because of poor first touches. I know it’s not a popular opinion, but I’m hoping for someone else to return and take Henry’s spot with a quickness. The reason isn’t anything other than that I believe Eto’o to be a more capable striker than Henry, but the two do not seem to play well together. I don’t know whose fault that is, but I think we need our best players out there and that would be Eto’o, carving up space in the middle and scoring goals, not out on the right where he seems to be a bit lost. Henry so rarely cuts into the middle, which is, of course, idiotic for a striker. I’d rather have Eto’o receiving from Iniesta and Bojan than being forced wide. I can’t wait for Messi to return not only for the obvious reasons, but also because I think that puts Henry back on the bench. Especially if Ronaldinho ever makes a strong return, which is, of course, looking more and more doubtful.

Our defense was, once again, rock solid in the first half and trash in the second. Abidal looked like he was going to be beaten by Asamoah every single time the latter got the ball, then Asamoah got taken off and Abidal was spared blushes for the second game in a row. Interestingly enough, the introduction of Sylvinho out wide created more chances for Barca than had been coming prior to a fifth defender being added. I think this is because Henry was forced in just a bit with Sylvinho bombing up the side. Maybe that will “learn” him to get his butt into the box and get some tap-ins. Or maybe it’ll teach Rijkaard to tell him to do that. I don’t know what’s the worse prior reality…

But we won. I shouldn’t pick the team apart too much, right? How about the good: Iniesta and Xavi were terrific in midfield. They won a ton of balls with superb positioning and were able to spring some counterattacks that unfortunately vanished with bad touches by the forward line or Bojan was overpowered by defenders old enough to be his great-grandfather (because he’s negative 20 years old). Valdes had little to do, in the end, couldn’t have been expected to save any of the free headers or shots that were gifted to Schalke in the final minutes, and even poked Larsen’s shot over the bar to save us. So kudos on that one, even if he did spill one ball he should really have gathered up.

It was good to see Marquez back and you just knew he was going to get a yellow from the instant he stepped on the field. Same with Milito, though. He likes to live dangerously, which is why I assume the ladies are attracted to him. Or is it the hair? Either way, we can’t get more stupid yellow cards, dammit. We don’t need to lose any players for the semifinals, if we make it that far. ManU, who defeated Roma 2-0 in Rome, will be looking to put the heel on the throat next week and I don’t think there’s anything even a saint like Francesco Totti can do about it.

Dos Santos too appeared for a brief amount, replacing Eto’o, but he did virtually nothing on that side, just as his predecessor did little. I can’t fault Rijkaard for the substitution, really, because you have to make changes at some point and short of putting Marquez on for one of the strikers, what was he going to do differently? Gudjohnsen for one of them? I mean, there were options, but nothing really that feasible considering the situation. I didn’t mind the changes and even though Sylvinho surprised me (and I wondered about the move) and meant sticking Henry alone up front, it seemed to work in the Arsenal mold, which is something to think about. If a 5-4-1 is an option, then okay, it’s good to know that that’s an attacking options available to us. I generally hate that formation, but only because most coaches use it as a defensive, park-the-bus kind of formation rather than one designed to play beautifully through the midfield. It’s almost a 4-2-4 that works fluidly and with the proper personnel a la Total Football.

All-in-all, not a terrible performance, but certainly something to work on. I like that we won and perhaps this will get us back to our winning ways. We host Getafe on Sunday and then Schalke come to town on Wednesday for another little tangle. Both are must wins, even if we can squeak by with a draw in the latter.

If you’re looking for somewhere in your town to watch those two games, look no farther than the page we’re building here at The Offside: Where to Watch: The best places to watch FC Barcelona in action. So, whose heart went into their throat when they stretchered Krkic off? Mine did. As a matter of fact, it wound up in my throat after bouncing off my brain pan.

Isaiah is right. We score, then seem to lose interest. As I said in the preview, Schalke can’t seem to score in an empty stadium, and thank the heavens for that. We should have lost that one, but we didn’t.

It was still a tale of two halves, but at least we waited until later in the second half this time to begin the cave-in.

I saw more of my beloved “when in doubt, kick it out” from the defense, which was good. They don’t scramble well, which was bad. Schalke’s best chances came from chaos. Against almost any Liga side, those chances are capitalised upon. But it was Schalke, so we go home with an important away goal, and I can say that I was at least right about the final score, though Henry certainly should have curled that ball in. Bastard. He’s been shooting too quickly of late. But his feed to Krkic was tip-top, so at least my scorer got the assist.

And no, I didn’t like a lot of what I saw in the second half, but I also saw a lot of good in that they kept playing. There were only temporary lapses. So on we go. I’d be a lot happier with a 2-0 aggregate with two away goals going into next week’s home leg, but I just can’t see Schalke scoring. If they didn’t today, I just don’t see them doing so in our house.

And how about all the falling down from the Schalke players? It was pretty annoying in the first half, and they seemed to tone it down a lot in the second, mostly because they had been let back into the match. Argh.

But it’s all about the positivity. We won. We’ll beat Getafe this weekend, take care of Schalke on Wednesday, and get ready for Man U.

ManU will screw our happiness if we keep playing the same way….this game was as bad as the Betis one….
zamby will have a hell of a tough time with Ronaldo….
we need ronaldinho, messi and deco….ronaldinho and deco mite not play that well, but their presence is enough to keep ManU on the backfoot..

It’s encouraging that we won, but little else of the performance gives reason to be happy for long. I was watching the ManU-Roma game and it looked like either team could take Barca down, playing the way they did.

But there’s always that faith… Forca Barca!

Any away win in the Champs quarterfinal is a good day to me, but yeah the team has got to play more consistently, and soon. Nice feed from Henry and Bojan going full stretch for the finish, pretty goal.

I was reading the Live Commentary on ESPN because channelsurfing.net let me down, and reading about the ref calling for the stretcher for Bojan were some very anxious moments, Kevin, man the team cannot lose another wonder kid. The Football Gods are not that cruel.

Keep the faith, everyone. As I said in a previous post, our strengths play to Man U’s weaknesses. We’ll be better against them than Roma, and we do tend to play up to better competition. It’s all going to be fine.

The positives about this match, compared to Betis: We didn’t look as fatigued. We kept playing, and didn’t get as sloppy. Yes, the lack of interest was there. I think we’re going to have to get used to that one for a while. We were also more physical, which was very good. We’ll need that against Man U. I wouldn’t worry about the yellow cards thing. That ref was handing out yellows like candy.

That goal, like the first half against Betis, was what the lads can do when they turn it loose. It was a goal that came from interplay and movement, and one that very few teams in the world could have stopped. That gutting pass from Iniesta was extraordinary, and that it came in the run of play was even more encouraging.

And, just as Schalke could have had goals against us, Roma had many chances against Roma. They just had crappy luck/finishing, kinda like Schalke. When we play, we are the best side in the world. Period. The end.

More good news: Deco is back in the side for the Getafe match. Messi returns to Barcelona tomorrow to finish off his rehab. As for Ronaldinho? Well, who the hell knows. But scuttlebutt is that he will return to the side for the next away match, since they don’t want to risk having his mellow harshed by having those pesky Camp Nou fans giving him the verbal once-over. :D

If I were there and he came back at home, I’d sure boo his ass. But what makes them think that sneaking him back into side for an away match means that the knowledgeable faithful won’t jeer him at the very NEXT home match?

    Just asking….

Oh, and Isaiah, I think Henry doesn’t cut into the middle because he’s very conscious of trying to fit into the team scheme, and is staying on the wing to leave the middle clear for Eto’o and Krkic. He gets fed the ball on the wing, and will drift out wide to clear space for guys to make the run at goal, so that he can make the pass or move to the edge of the box and do his thing from there.

In my ideal world, Henry would be the central striker, working with Messi and Krkic. He has a better first touch than Eto’o (particularly of late. Eto’o’s been cocking balls all over the place.), takes in the long ball better and has better ball retention with defenders on him. Eto’o is great at creating a bit of space and finishing, he’s also great at picking up loose change and converting it, and he has a lightning shot. He’s an awesome striker, no question.

Eto’o isn’t great at curling shots, or the kind of guile that a fast, strong, veteran striker such as Henry brings to the table.

I’ve been thinking a lot about why they don’t play well together, and watching them play together. They worked REALLY well together in the first half of the Betis match. I think that they both need to understand (can someone say coaching?) their roles in the overall scheme. They both want to do the same thing, and both are used to getting the ball, and finishing.

Henry and Eto’o work best if they understand the capabilities of each other, and how those capabilities work with those of Krkic. Henry has a much better understanding of that right now than Eto’o, who just wants to score goals. Period.

The reason Eto’o worked so well with the likes of Messi and Ronaldinho is that the latter two had moves that would draw defenders, freeing up Eto’o to do his thing. Henry and Krkic are both in-the-box specialists, which means that they all have to adapt. Krkic and Henry are. Henry is getting better and better at making passes and understanding his draw-and-dish role, rather than his past role as a pure striker. He’ll get better at that.

The question now is when Messi returns, who sits? I would argue that Henry should sit, for the simple reason that he brings an energy into the side off the bench that Eto’o doesn’t. Eto’o returns to the role that he’s so good at, and everything is good in the ‘hood. And Henry won’t pout as much about coming off the bench. But you HAVE to keep Krkic in the side at this point. He’s playing too well right now.
