Vacation!
By: Isaiah | September 6th, 2007My long awaited vacation is now here and even though it’s only 10 days (6 working days), it will certainly be awesome, relaxing, and extremely hard on my liver. Destination: Heróica Puebla de Zaragoza, a little hamlet of about 2 million a couple hours southwest of Mexico City.
Anyway, here are highlights of Barcelona’s 2-3 win over Girona:
Note that until Sylvinho scored, Barcelona still hadn’t scored from open play. And that own goal: wow, what a ridiculous flubber.

Isaiah, when you get back I hope you’ll adress this:
“It’s shameful that the clubs have to hand over the players to the national teams without any compensation. The national teams make money with our players and I think that measures have to be taken. This matter is being discussed in UEFA and in FIFA but I don’t see the willingness to solve it, when it could be done straight away. If it isn’t sorted out, we’ll have to consider, in some way or the other, not handing over players to the national teams”.
This from Laporta on a rant, posted on Barce’s website, about Unity. He also rants about how Spain won’t allow Catalonia to play as a national side in fixtures. (And why won’t the USA let Texas play, for that matter?) Wouldn’t it be just great if even national teams had to buy their talent? I know as a Madrid fan, with the whole Diarra situation at the end of last season, every time I criticize Barce I’m being at best slightly hypocritical, but… Yeah, Laporta, it would be great if even national sides had to buy their talent. After all, the Ivory Coast is starting to look a bit threatening in international play.

I don’t think a province or region should be allowed to field a team in international tournaments — but by the same yardstick, there should not be FOUR teams from the UK. It is absurd that there are separate teams for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. As long as that anomaly remains, folks from Catalunya, Galicia, the Basque Country (and other such regions across Europe) will be able to say, “Hey, we want that, too.”Posted from

Wow Bobby G, that’s actually a really good point. But I can’t help but feel that the case is a bit different in the nature of the four constituant countries of Britain (especially scotland) and the autonomous regions of Spain. With Scotland, it was a seperate nation until the 18th century, as opposed to Catalonia, which was first recognized as an autonomous region during the advent of the Republic in the 1930’s, and regained it’s status 1979. Point being - Scotland was a seperate nation for centuries, Catalonia has been an autonoumous region for less than fifty years. Not that these numbers really matter; I wouldn’t argue that the Republic of Ghana should be denied Nation status simply because they became a free state in the 1950’s, but my point is that saying that Scots and Englishmen are one and the same nationality is a bit more of a stretch than saying the same of Catalans and Andalusians.
Once again, though, you raise an excellent point (and seeing how Northern Ireland is threatening to oust Spain from Euro 2008 in the group stages, at the moment I’m especially tempted to argue their legitamacy).

Sorry, I’m not buying the whole “they’ve been a separate nation for centuries” argument. Lots of former “nations” are now part of different countries — and lots of today’s countries used to be (for centuries) parts of other countries.
Nor should it matter that N. Ireland is strong enough to beat Spain, or Scotland strong enough to beat France. After all, virtually every state in the U.S. can probably field a world-class basketball team in the Olympics, and I’m pretty sure several Brazilian provinces (perhaps even towns!) can put together a soccer side good enough to make the World Cup.
If you don’t have a separate seat in the United Nations, then you should not be entitled to a separate FIFA membership. Can’t get simpler than that, really.

Well, Bobby, I really can’t argue with you there. However, should Scotland’s National side be taken away from them (especially when they’re doing well), than they would probably secede from the Union. It would certainly stir things up!
