Copa Preview: Barça – Benidorm, Wednesday 3pmEST [Updated]
By: Isaiah | November 11th, 2008
[Updated Version] It’s back to the Copa del Rey once again, this time in the second leg of our draw against Benidorm. My first leg preview is here (there was no review). We come in ahead 1-0 on aggregate, thanks to a Bojan goal. We’re certainly not out of the woods yet — though we could be forgiven for thinking that starting first teamers is a good idea since Schuster is apparently leaving out Guti and Casillas their match today against Real Union even though RM is down 2-3 on aggregate — so expect Guardiola to fire the boys up and get them to put the boot into the proverbial hiney.
They should be ready for the challenge after their — ahem — pep talk. Get it? A little play on words never hurt anyone. That and Benidorm is a Segunda B team that we should be able to beat in our sleep.
This match comes after a 6-0 goalfest against Valladolid, a game which was over quite early. Despite this being a Segunda B team we’re facing, I think complacency like we saw against Basel may creep in. Players like Pedro should be given time, but we’ll see because Guardiola may want to put out first team lineup in order to win it early and coast home.
I’m getting a little ticked at Guardiola for not releasing his squad lists so that I can look at them and pick the wrong starting 11. Honestly, Pepster, what are you doing to me? I’ve got this blog to run, you’ve got championships to win…they’re basically equivalent so cut me some freaking slack, will ya? It’s 8:30pm your time right now and you haven’t put out a list yet. What, am I supposed to get up at like 4am to see it? Jeez, why does it have to be about you all the time? Please make it about me from now on. Okay, thank you.
So no squad list, but do we really need one? Here’s my Guardiola-ed lineup:
Pinto, Alves, Cáceres, Márquez, Sylvinho, Victor Sanchez, Busquets, Gudjohnsen, Pedro…um…Peter Parker, John Cena
Yeah. That’s what I’m talking about. It’s not technically handball if you use a web, right? Damn you, Guardiola! But wouldn’t Spiderman be better in goal? Hell, just put Team Shaolin out there and get it over with. It’s not like they’d score more goals in the league. [And yes, by including Team Shaolin, I am definitely suggesting that Calderon is the equivalent of Hung and RM is Team Evil -- Raul is totally this striker.]
[It's now 3:30 and Real Union is up 1-0 at the Bernabeu. Oh holy christ!]
Update! Update! The starting lineup appears to be headed for a full-on first team affair. Pep Guardiola is not going to start any B-Teamers because it’s time to let the whoopass out of the can, especially after yesterday’s Real Madrid debacle. I’ll post the actual lineup as soon as I see it.
Here is the starting lineup (thanks again, Andrew): Pinto, Alves, Cáceres, Puyol, Sylvinho, Busquets, Gudjohnson, Keita, Hleb, Bojan, Messi
Also, readers Andrew and ballbave have suggested the following link as a place to stream the game: http://www.justin.tv/confutbol_com (specifically http://www.justin.tv/badtv2 )

That’s funny, IceMel. I think that sums up a lot of Messi’s runs. Maybe I’ll nickname him “Lastima.”
That’s how his runs sound on ESPN Deportes, as well.
Good question, ballbeav. I have no idea. I know he’s healthy last anyone heard. Might have just been a “He’s old, and we shouldn’t need him to put the smack down” kind of thing.

And when Barca news and action gets WAY too vexing or stressful, you can always go here. Everybody, repeat after me: “Awwwwwww!”

One example of how rumors get started. As we all know already, the real story is that we’ve said no January tranfers, unless someone gets seriously injured enough to be out for the season.
Nonetheless, tribalfootball.com, in a staggering bit of interpretative liberty tantamount to think the Biblical “eye for an eye” means an ocular swap meet, has used the Guardiola quote about Arshavin’s quality to mean that we aim to beat the EE to the Russian’s signing. They go so far as to say that Guardiola has “demanded” the Arshavin signing.
Absurd.
And ajani, you need one of my Enermax Aurora keyboards.

Brushed aluminum, slick action, quiet. But yet, it still has the same QWERTY key layout.

Wait wait wait. Why in the world are people talking about potential signings in January? What is our record, again?
8-1-1? 8 wins in a row? Knockout stage of the CL? Oh man, we need reinforcements stat. Are you kidding me? We need David Silva like we need a punch in the face. We’re the best team on the planet and we’re talking about David Silva? He’s good, yeah, but Andres Iniesta from here till eternity and back. Arshavin? Whatever. SPF45, yo.
Mario Gomes? Whatever, we’ve got Pedro and Gai Assulin waiting in the wings. Who else is there to suggest? We’ve got a team that has Yaya, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Eto’o, and Thierry Henry as a starting lineup and we have Hleb, Keita, and Busquets as backups. And we’re talking Mario Gomes?
Playoffs?
You gotta be kidding me.

i was suggesting silva as iniesta’s replacement whenever he is tired, or injured. i’d be the last person in the world to suggest sidelining Iniesta. And i wasnt calling for him to be purchased now, or ever, just merely pondering what his purchase might entail.
But yeah, after our 0-1-1 start to the season, we have been pretty eff’ing amazing. As obvious as this might sound, as long as we keep a steady pace of 3 points per jornada, we’ll be champions
BTW… in reference to Shiba Inu Puppy Cams… ; Slow day at the office there Kevin???

Watching Arsenal – Villa, I hate to say but Aresnal would be crazy not to make a big run at Yaya in January. They have no one to hold, and Villa have run them over on counters. The defense has no protection from the counters, and no pace to recover. I think they’re out of the Premiership race, but to have any chance they need a real holding midfielder ASAP.

Guys, have a look on guardiola’s conference held after today’s morning session, especially what he had to say about Ruud, schuster, and RM, this man is special in every aspect, so classy..

You always need puppies, Jason.
More impressive was that Guardiola fined the lads for being late to practice by a couple of minutes. Very good. Sure, it would have been easy to say “Oh, things are rolling along fine, I’ll just let it slide this time.”
But no. Discipline is a good thing. We saw what happened last season in that regard.
Is there a link, Waleed?

but you gota use our imagination to arrange the jigsaw translation!!

in reference to BAD GolTV commentators, if i hear “… with the shake, the bake, … and the make” one more time, I will be forced to start a petition calling for what’s-his-name to immediately tender his resignation, or for GolTV to fire him. I think I’ll start listening to the spanish broadcast if he is ever doing the game…
