Copa Preview: Benidorm – Barça, Tuesday 3pm EST
By: Isaiah | October 27th, 2008
UpdatedSo now we’re back with our third real competition (Copa Catalunya doesn’t count) of the year: the Copa del Rey. We start out in 4th round thanks to our status as Primera Liga members and we start out away to Benidorm in the first of a two-legged affair.
“Beniwhat?” you may be asking yourself. Fair enough, but let’s see if we can do their history a little bit of justice. Benidorm is a town on the southern coast sitting on some beautiful beaches halfway between Valencia and Alicante. Will our boys be seduced by the draw of the luxurious beaches or are they bored by the whole playa thing yet? It’s not like Barcelona doesn’t have its share of beaches, after all.
The club, Benidorm Club Deportivo, was founded in 1964 and has never made it above the Segunda B, where it currently resides in Group 3 alongside our very own Barça Atlètic. Currently Benidorm sit in 9th in the group with 13points from 10 games while Barça Atlètic is in 17th with 10 points from 10 games. So they’re not the best, but they’re also not the worst. They have a 6,000 seat stadium, which should be quite a change of pace from the Camp Nou, to say the least.
But Barça cannot sleep on this team any more than they can sleep on their weekly league rivals. With that in mind, Pep has called up the following group of players: Pinto, Jorquera, Piqué, Cáceres, Sylvinho, Alves, Abidal, Touré, Busquets, Víctor Sánchez, Henry, Bojan, Eto’o, Hleb, Nolito, Abraham.
So, Valdes gets a break and either Pinto or Jorquera will appear between the pipes. Jorquera is just returning from breaking himself in a Catalonia “national team” friendly 10 months ago. Furthermore, Márquez, Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta and Messi are also not included. I’m not even sure who Nolito is, but he’s listed as a forward and he’ll probably take part in the match, if Pep’s track record of starting B-teamers is to be trusted.
Nolito’s real name is Manuel Agudo Duran and he’s 22 years old (born October 15, 1986). That is exactly all of the information I have about him (gleaned from the official site). As for Abraham González Casanovas, he’s 23 (born July 16, 1985)* and he’s a midfielder. We’ll see if either of them get playing time, but I do imagine they’ll be subbed on, especially if the game goes according to plan.
Without that midfield troika that we’ve relied on so much, the going will be a bit tougher, especially since Keita, Pedro, and Gudjohnsen are all out injured (the complete list includes Milito, but that’s a given). So how do we go about getting the points? I imagine we’ll have a very young team out there, with this as my suggestion:
Pinto, Alves, Pique, Caceres, Sylvinho, Busquets, Víctor Sánchez, Abraham, Hleb, Henry, Bojan
Here’s my reasoning behind this lineup: youth and inexperience, but a desire to prove, plus weaker opposition. That means more forgiveness for mistakes (forgiveness from our opponents, of course, not from Pep) and thus a better atmosphere to get some new legs a little bit of time on the field. Note that I did put Abraham out there, but that’s for lack of more midfielders available. Maybe Toure gets the start instead of Víctor Sánchez, but why risk him? This is leg 1 and if we’re somehow not winning after this, we’ll have leg 2 to wrap it all up using a bolstered squad.
Most of the commenters here on this board will note a general appreciation of Henry as the central striker from both myself and Kevin — at least when Eto’o is not on the field, in my case. We also agree that Bojan + Henry = fun! That’s some high level math, I know, but let’s not be fooled, complex equations or no, Henry and Bojan have generally played well when starting together.
The return leg isn’t until November 12, so there’s a small break in which to consider the options (though it’s filled with 2 league games and a CL match). Official prediction: 3-0, Barça. We’re just better than they are, especially right now.
Unfortunately it doesn’t appear that the game will be broadcast in the US except via P2P clients. Please provide links in the comments if you’ve got them and I’ll try to put them here for everyone.
Update: Thierry Henry has been removed from the squad list because of “stomach problems” — apparently he was sick all night and in the morning the team doctors called for a day of rest. Carles Puyol will take his place, meaning we now have another potential right back and our captaincy is no longer up for question (assuming Puyi will be on the field).
My new lineup: Pinto, Puyol, Pique, Caceres, Sylvinho, Busquets, Victor Sanchez, Abraham, Hleb, Bojan, Eto’o

*Of the B teamers, only Gai Assulin and Thaigo Alcantara were born in the 90s. Both of them were born in April ‘91. That fact surprised me.

Dudek, Salgado, Metzelder, Heinze, Marcelo, Diarra, De La Red, Higuain, Guti, Drenthe, Saviola started for EE. And Sneijder even got 20mins. I love seeing them lose. It’s almost as fun as watching us win. I might even say I’d rather see them lose than us win in a scappy 1-0.

I dunno, Ciaran. I’d rather see us win than anything else, even them losing.

whatever…it’s satisfying.

I didn’t see the match, but evidently de la Red collapsed on the field. Sounds like he’s okay, but hopefully it’s nothing serious.

I have always liked De La Red for some reason. It’s such a shame he came through their ranks. He has a lot of class on the ball.

The news about De La Red is really scary, considering what happened just a season ago with Puerta. I hope he’s okay.

was the EE game at home or away?
that such great news that they lost. even more so because it highlights the lack of depth in their team. hopefully they will get hit with a couple of injuries. (that sounds really mean of me, i dont wish personal injury on anyone but rather a lack options for the opposition)

Holy crap, welcome back, Linda.
1. I hope de la Red is fine, regardless of whether he’s a class act or not.
2. I can’t believe RM just lost. Though, of course they’ll fix that, as Kevin said, when it returns to the Bernabeu (andrew, the game was away).Posted from

Might as well ask about this now. Who is showing this game in the US (on TV)? i dont see that any of the pubs here in town are showing it. i might be destined to watching streaming internet again…not as satisfying…

Sorry to bother you guys with a completely unrelated question, but I have a question that wasn’t completely answered in my internet quest. From what I understand, GoltTV has La Liga rights for this season and not next season. Any chance we might get it in HD here in the states? It would be so awsome to see Barça in HD.

Does anyone in Spain broadcast in HD yet?
I’m not sure, but the Liga games we get here in Italy are not available in HD. The technology is not yet as common here as it is in North America (only selected Serie A matches and the Champions League are available in HD here).

Anyone know how long abidals gonna be out?

To answer all of your questions:
GolTV will be showing Barça-Malaga at 3pmEST on Saturday.
I doubt it will be in HD as FSC/Setanta/GolTV are not in HD. God help us all if FSC or Setanta get their hands on our precious league — as Kevin has said before, that would mean no more free Clasicos, only PPV.
Abidal is out for 2 games according to the official site. Apparently “he has a cyst on his external meniscus” says the article.

Oh, the Benidorm match will be on Fox Soccer tonight for anyone interested. I’ll be watching.
The only HD opportunities for our lads at present are via ESPN2/HD, which shows all the Champions League matches. I expect we’ll get a lot of love during the knockout phases. As you all know, the live match gets the HD feed, while the tape delay match gets ESPN Classic.
Hey, word from over at Pep’s Place (report on a Catalan radio broadcast) is that we were going to offer Xavi and Gudjohnsen/money for Hleb/Fabregas.
Before you all get all shocked and stuff, don’t forget that many of us weren’t all that into Xavi last season. Then he went to Euros and became a man and stuff.

We should have offered them Gudjohnsen for Hleb/Fabregas. Then we should have clubbed Wenger over the head, signed his name to the deal using his unconscious hand, and run away cackling gleefully.
Totally worth the FIFA wrist slap.

oops….i meant the basel match. is any TV network showing the champs league match vs basel here in the US?

xavi is mostly the same as he ever was, but the subtlety of his wizardry isnt always quickly apparent. plus last year he was playing in a deeper position that also wasnt as noticable.

Xavi for Fabergas?? Not a chance. Direct quote from Guardiola: “With me as coach Xavi remains here, that is non-negotiable”. He may not have been at his best last season, but nobody was really. He is definitely showing his worth now and while Fabergas is a great player with a lot of room for improvement i couldnt see him breaking into our starting eleven right now to be honest. Who would he replace? Xavi…no, Iniesta…No

funny…..just after i check in here this morning, i go over to the officical FCB site and i see that there is a communique stating: ‘Xavi, continuidad “innegociable” ‘
“The FC Barcelona calls bullshit on the newspaper reports in recent hours that have asserted that the club planned the transfer of midfielder Xavi this past summer. For the technical secretary as well as the current technical team — and with all the support of the board of directors — Xavi Hernandez is a fundamental piece of the new sporting project. As such the club and the player are having discussions to extend the contract that unites the two (club and player) and that is scheduled to end June 30 2010.
Formed in the youth ranks, for more than a decade, the trajectory of Xavi in the first team of FCB is impeccable, his footballing conditions well known and his implication in the project and the values of the club, beyond discussion.” (alright, this translation is a little tricky)

more news…guddy and pedro are back from injury but are not called up for Malaga. maybe they will be in the squad against Basel. keita is training at the margins, but he is running. abidal, as mentioned before, is out.

I cannot comment much, since i didnt see the game… but poor little saviola should really have won that game if he had any hopes of getting liga minutes, as it is schuster has 0 confidence in him.
and from i what i have seen from the 4-5 madrid games ive watched this season, a Madrid without Ruud vanNistelrooy is a very weak and blunt team.
heres hoping that nistelrooy stay out of the return leg, and that Irun uses a 10-0-0 formation…

Deportes is, ballbeav. They show every match on every match day.
And I don’t think that Xavi is the same player that he was last season. He’s more decisive this season, spends less time on the ball and is a lot more direct. Same with Iniesta, who has become a left-side Messi bookend.

true that kevin… playing center striker in between messi, and iniesta has to be a very comfortable position… not to take anything away from eto’o, who ,to make an understatement, is on from this season.
i dont know who mentioned this earlier, but the ability to hit the early goal makes the game too easy, because a team chasing a game vs us is a team looking for an ass-kicking…. last season when we had a no goals in the scond half, we either got desperate and sloppy/wasteful, or we kept playing as if we were the better team satisfied by a larger possesion stat.
as far as abidal, he will be missed but sylvinho has 100 percent confidence from me, regardless of the opponent. plus el capitan can play anywhere in the defense… thats my peice for now kids…

Thanks, Isaiah – I’ve never left, really, just been lurking.
I like what Pep said about those Xavi rumours. It’s bad enough that Tuttosport keeps trying to start rumours about our entire midfield…
