Copa Preview: Mallorca – Barça, Wednesday 4pmEST, GolTV
By: Isaiah | March 3rd, 2009
If you’re wondering what to do with the disproportionate amount of hope floating around in your chest, El Mundo Deportivo is about as bored as you are and is half-gleeful and half-panicky in its announcement that their Facebook group called “We Believe” (Creemos) has 5,000 members! OMG. And in case you’re unfamiliar with Facebook, EMD provides you with a handy-dandy, red, bold link to an explanation. OH GOD UPDATE UPDATE: They’ve got 8,000 now! Oh jesushchristthisissoexcitingggg!!!!1@.
Or you could do what I do on game days: stare at my computer screen while hitting refresh every time the squad list page loads. I can barely even register any of the words on the screen, deciding when things have been posted only by shifting line lengths and number of characters present. Will it be The Yaya? Marquez? Ack, Pep, you’re already killing me and there are 24 hours until kickoff!
So we’re up 2-0 in this here two-legged tie, which fundamentally changes the way that I approach this preview. Here are our chances to advance: any win of any score, any draw of any score, and a 1-0 loss. A 2-0 loss means we go to extra time. So, barring a Getafe-esque debacle, we’ll go through even if we start the second-tier team.
However, last time we played, it looked like this before and this after. Mallorca was, at the time, going in with several losses and draws in a row, but now they’ve won 3 straight, including 2 straight away. That, um, changes things. This is their only chance for any silverware whatsoever, so we’re going to have to show up, despite our obvious advantage going on.
Guardiola has called for all hands on deck, so to speak, by putting everyone on the squad list. Everyone. Like…all of them. Yeah, that narrows it down for me, Pep. Thanks a lot. But, I’m going to forge ahead, as always, in the face of adversity.
I’m calling for the following lineup: Pinto, Alves, Pique, Caceres, Sylvinho, Busi, Keita, Hleb, Bojan, Eto’o, Pedro!
There are reasons for each player. Let’s build at the back. Pinto is our Copa keeper and that’s just how it is. It has nothing to do with Valdes’ real or perceived foibles, but rather because we’ve always used Pinto and not doing so would be silly. I don’t think that Pinto increases or decreases goalie risks, to be honest, because he brings a different style from Valdes. VV has the reaction speed that Pinto lacks, but Pinto has better command of his area, generally speaking. So that’s that.
The defense should be, I think, the same as it was against Real Betis, with the exception of Sylvinho for Abidal. The reason is because despite Mallorca’s obvious need to push forward, if we play with Sylvinho on the wing, we can keep pressure on their wingers, who will be forced to play slightly withdrawn in order to prevent Hleb and Sylvinho from combining up the side with Bojan in order to get the ball into the box to Eto’o more fluidly. Now, I know that the best response to this, if you’re not in favor of Sylvinho starting, is merely to point out that the last time Sylvinho started, he not only didn’t play particularly well, but also we lost. And we lost because we didn’t have enough coverage on the wings. Fair enough. However, I think that Sylvinho can prevent a 2-0 or worse loss simply by providing solid crosses that Bojan and Eto’o can put away. We’ve already seen that Bojan can get in behind defenses when there are good crosses sent his way, so why not increase the number that do so, especially since Mallorca is not going to be able to muster the same amount of offensive firepower that Atleti did.
As for subs, I think we can give Milito 20 minutes at the end, to get him some reps, especially if we’ve got the game salted away. Even if we don’t, though, I think it’s worth giving him the opportunity to kick some people in the shins and get back into the swing of things.
In the middle, I’m calling for a DM (Busi), fronted by Keita and Hleb. I think that this is the opportunity Hleb can use to create something on the wings with both Alves and Pedro! or, if he switches to the left, with Sylvinho and Bojan. That takes some of the playmaking pressure off of him, though it does increase the pressure on Keita, who would be responsible for the high pressure and their playmaking midfielders. I can see Guardiola betting on Xavi to be able to play his way through 4 more games (Mallorca, Bilbao, Lyon, Almeria), but I don’t necessarily think that’s the best way to go. Give Xavi and Messi their time off and at halftime you can sub on Iniesta, who will dramatically change the game. If Iniesta does start, then throw him on for either Hleb or Pedro!, depending on the role you want him to play.
Iniesta can play either the Xavi role or the left winger role, depending on what’s necessary. Starting him isn’t the best idea, I don’t think, because I’d like to see him play against both Bilbao and Lyon (especially Lyon). However, getting him some playing time is good. If we need more width on the left, we can either swap out Bojan directly or swap Bojan and Pedro! and the sub on Iniesta for Pedro!.
The front line (Bojan, Eto’o, Pedro!) is designed to both put some fresh legs out there and provide some width to what has lately been a slightly underwhelming attack in terms of speed and precision (not counting Messi’s goal against Atleti). Eto’o, however, is a beast, but just needs to get a little bit of confidence into his legs and he’ll return to the goal-per-game rate that we were just getting used to. His veteran leadership (if you can call it that because I’m not sure screaming and being a total beastly beast counts as leadership, but sometimes it does, I guess, maybe) is necessary and good, and he provides a lot of physical power in the middle that no one else on the team can. He has positional sense and capability that no one else has and he can open up channels in the offense for both himself and for his partners up front.
So there you have it, my defense of my lineup. Show me the light, if you can, in the comments.
Official prediction time, suckas: 2-1, Barcelona. Goals by Eto’o and Bojan. We’re the best team out there and we’re going to prove it against Mallorca, with our second-string team. And we’re going to let in a consolation goal late in the match thanks to Milito getting a bit mixed up with Pique, who he has never played with before. (Our third sub will be Guddy on for Keita).
And, because this is the Copa, don’t forget that the Where to Watch page is relevant.

@ Sid yeah interesting. I’d like to see a Yaya/Busi double pivot, and watch the opposition all run away from the former only to get sliced down by the latter (the old Giant-Cop/Bad-cop scenario.)
Those will have to be some beautiful attack minded mid-fielders though, or everyone’s ugly-detector is going to start beeping.
Ok I put my lineup on Pep’s blog ’cause I just found out they have prizes there (well at least a cool table anyway.) Bad luck to post it here (and it needs lots of luck.)
But the score? : a stanky 1-1, like the stock market I don’t think we’ve bottomed yet…but I sure hope so.

So Pedro’s new nickname is Pedro! ? Thats pretty cool lol! I hope he scores or does some fancy footwork and can be integrated in those tight congested weeks where we play 3 times. Hope we dont get knocked out… I would really like to see the treble and if we put this one away early (assuming that we will win the final) we can still hope.

hmm… i think the line-up is ok (since there is only one alteration to the one i proposed…)
the problem i see with the line-up though is the control of the midfield and the creativity. I know we can stop their midfield and win the ball back, but then what?
I’ll keep this one free of Hleb-bashing, and just say that i wish Hleb starts tomorrow, and i wish him the best of luck, cuz really i never want to see anyone wearing the blaugrana do bad. (NO one tell kxevin i said that!)

- The line up is very good, unless if Sylvinho has no legs for this game. The previous match was exhausting and for his age he may need more time to recover. But if he is fresh enough, he can do the job.
- I refuse to enter this game with any concerns. I am calm and its a guaranteed qualification for me. Beside the possibilities Isaiah mentioned about our chances to advance, there is also the fact that Barcelona always score goals. So if we scored once they need to score 4 goals to advance. Now I know our defense deserved no songs of praise lately, but that will be too miserable to come true.
- Finally I think if Busquets and Keita played as DM, that will release the pressure of Hleb back and he will feel more secure to play his game upfront. I started to dream of a barcelona with 2 DM, I have been begging for it since long enough to get my wish!
Good luck, even though YES we don’t need it!
- Pst…this team is too good to need supportive groups like “we believe”, neither the players nor the coach need it. I found no group named “We beg for mercy” for the teams barcelona turned into pieces in the past few months!
Lets finish this one and go back to serious business against Bilbao.

Well, he said once before that there was a conspiracy theory where his agent fall in a trap of signing an agreement with RM to make the move. he had two choices back then -as he claimed- either he fulfill the agreement conditions or his agent go to jail.

Well, I have to agree it’s the perfect line-up. Isaiah for manager
I just hope that Pep chooses a similar line-up with just one or at worst case two different starters (e.g. Guddi). I don’t know about Pep’s English skills, but somehow we have to make him read this blog, maybe he can get something out of it!
Pep is leaving with the whole squad, I suppose it’s just a sort of mind-game. It might already cause concerns and tremulousness at the Mallorcians. But there’s another point. When the line-up is finally being released and they see “Ah, no Messi, no Xavi, no Henry, no Iniesta. We gotta win this match!!!” they’ll be relieved but – just some minutes later – Pedro, Bojan and Co. will have convinced them of Barca being “mes que un club” consisting of those 4 star-players
So, my prediction: 3-1 with goals from Pedro, Hleb and Bojan !

A question to all my barca fellas..
When barca is defending a corner kick, how come
Valdes never places a player at each sidebar of the goal?Any reason to why, unlike most teams? Cause we let atleast 1-3 goals a season, where i feel, someone should have been at that corner, heading och kickin it out
wrong or right?

Bashir, it’s a conscious decision on how to defend corners that comes from the coaching/practice sessions. They must think pretty highly of Valdes’ lateral movement. I also think that philosophically, that sort of defensive-minded thinking just isn’t part of our mind set. If there are two men on the post, that’s two men less to start the ensuing break going the other way, right?
Valdes seems to set his wall based more on narrowing his defending window, rather than keeping the posts clear. It’s worked up until now, during this clunky period.
More disconcerting for me is the vulnerability to the attacker bombing in from outside the box. Most of the goals off corners have come in this way. In basketball, it’s like forgetting to block out the guy coming in for the rebound off a free throw. Shouldn’t happen.
–Meanwhile, we’ve pulled out of the Miami MLS thing, citing economic issues. So much for Henry’s summer home, right?
–Isaiah, I LOVE that lineup, which guarantees that Guardiola won’t use it. But man, it makes so much sense, particularly given that Mallorca has all but bailed on the Copa, since they’re placing a lot more importance on staying up, as the side’s recent Liga form has shown.
And that’s even though I think that Krkic plays better and shows more confidence with Henry on the pitch, rather than Eto’o.

Bashir, I think the answer to your question is as follows (and others should feel free to correct me if they disagree): Barça currently plays zone marking on free kicks and corner kicks, meaning each player is responsible for a particular area. I don’t doubt that there is someone assigned to cover the corners of the goal, but they, like everyone else, has to cover both that area and whatever else they’re assigned (undoubtedly the few yards in any direction around where they are stationed, with the goal post being one boundary). Because of the nature of zone marking, every player must complete their assignment or the whole thing breaks down.
So Kevin sorta answered it already, but it seems a waste to delete what I’ve already written…
And yeah, because we all seem to be down with the lineup that I drew up (using informed decisions from previous comments, of course), we will definitely see something crazy like
Pinto, VicSan, Milito, Caceres, Puyol, Busi, The Yaya, Xavi, Iniesta, Henry, Bojan.

Apparently FCB’s basketball team (Regal Barça) is taking on Real Madrid Baloncesto — did you know Wally Szczerbiak’s dad, um, Wally Szczerbiak, played for RMbasketball? In fact, Wally Szczerbiak Jr was born in Madrid — in a bball clasico today in the Euroleague.
Remember, we beat them 83-75 last time we played them in the Copa del Rey de Baloncesto. So Visca el Barça and kick some merengue ass, fcbballers!

icemel, about the stock market: it’s time to buy buy buy, so if you’re in the mood for a bargain, how about snapping up some Barça shares.
Everyone, repeat after me:
“We’re good enough, We’re smart enough, and doggone it, people like us.”
Damn straight, Stu.

kxevin // I still recall that headed John Terry scored
against us in CL, to the far post from a corner, i still dream of wishin why no one is at the sidebar defending.the reasons you mention do sound like a good answer
and inline with barca filosofiBut those filosi, should be also adapted to the teams u play, say its diff between Valencia in La Liga and Liverpool in CL.

Mallorca will try to play it patiently trying to defend by numbers and hunt a goal to unsettle us. Our defense will decide this game, its important not to get conceded early goals. one goal is enough for us to Qualify.
Bashir, as Kevin and Isaiah mentioned we are playing a different set pieces tactics than last season. Still early to see if its better or not. The guys are more focused on their positioning and on the ball than the movement of the opponents (Busquets is the most notable sample), we need to keep the eye on the movement of the opponent players to make sure we contain them and to be always one step ahead all the time.
Set pieces is mostly a coaching work in training. The Keeper do have a role and I think one of Valdes weaknesses is that he is not the leader in his box. You will never see him pulling Pique by his shirt and screaming in his face “Toldo way”. Something needed to keep the players alert because the keeper is the player who can scan the players of both teams movements and positions as well. And he is in the good position to predict opponents intentions.

FYI, the Sevilla-Bilbao second leg started with Sevilla up 2-1 on aggregate. At half time it’s 2-4 to Bilbao with 1 away goal for them and 0 for Sevilla.

*Sigh* Pretty bad game, although Barca did win. Yaya is getting progressively worse as the months go by. Mistake after mistake.
Pinto did pretty damn well to save that penalty. I love how he played his mind games to keep the PK taker under pressure.
