Copa Round of 16 draw: Atlético Madrid – Barça

By: Isaiah | December 1st, 2008

The draw for the Copa del Rey round of 16 occurred today and Barcelona drew Atlético Madrid, with Barcelona as home team. That means the January 7 game will be played at the Vicente Calderon and the January 14 return leg will be played at the Camp Nou.

While these games seem far off, they’re not. The first leg comes just 3 days after the Mallorca match, which is our first match of the new year (and our first match after Villarreal). One month from now the league could look very different than it does right now, meaning our priorities could be a little skewed going into these matches. We should definitely be confident about getting beyond this round and facing the winner of Espanyol-Poli Ejido, especially now that Espanyol has a new manager, but we have a lot to focus on between now and then…

Some news in brief, to make this post wortwhile:

Samuel Eto’o is now tied 10th all time in goals scored for Barcelona, having notched his 111th in all competitions against Sevilla. That ties him with Eulogio Martínez, a Paraguayan-Spaniard who played for FCB between 1956 and 1962.

Lionel Messi is tied with Steven Gerrard for most goals scored in the Champions League this year with 5. Interestingly, the official UEFA tally (pdf) has him scoring 5 in 314 minutes 4 seconds, while his official Barça stats page has him scoring 5 in 316 minutes. I suppose Barça rounds…but you know that I’m down with the UEFA’s minutiae.

We fight AIDS, what do you do? Oh. Low blow!

The backline is getting some official site love. Kevin would be proud. And probably is.

I guess now you don’t have to read the official site, cause I just linked all of it.

Kxevin is indeed proud. And think about the remark on the site, that Sevilla didn’t have a single attempt on goal for 45 MINUTES! A half of football, and total impotence. Awesome.

Man, is Atletico going to be spoiling for a fight.

isaiah: i asked a question here earlier and over at the atletico page regarding the origins of their crest, specifically the significance of the bear climbing the strawberry tree surrounded by stars. i got a very interesting reply by Al (who commented above) who moderates the atletico page in the form of a post.
you should all go and read it, its a nice little history lesson, and i thought perhaps one could be done regarding the barca crest and colours?

eklavya: calderon did offer the madrid players 120 000 euros each if they could win five matches in a row and since they have failed quite abysmally and it sparked a row over whether the EE players are motivated only by money and whether that is a good incentive. if you look back a few posts you will see isaiah posted a cartoon which shows EE motivated by money while barca is motivated by trophies.

Was watching some old matches from this season, and the progression from Espanyol to Sevilla is remarkable. There is so much more cohesion both at front and back. As you move from Numancia to Espanyol, through Almeria and Malaga, you can just see things coming together, more at the back than at the front, which was always potent. Very impressive.

i know we all dont take goal.com very seriously, but…

making this week’s “La Liga Team of The Week” was none other than Barcelona’s Gerard Pique! (no Marquez, Xavi, or Toure) But incidentally enough Sevilla’s Adriano made it!

are you effing kidding me? any minute shred of soccer cred that place had just went out the window.

(a little of topic, but the english language is horrible! i especially hate Heteronyms!!! [read, bass, etc] I had to second guess myself on how to spell “minute” (very small) because its spelled the same way as “minute” (60 seconds), and not pronounced the same way. Even as a native speaker, i must admit this language is an atrocity.) I do not envy your job Kxevin.

It’s from The Sun, Eklavya. It’s kind of the print version of tribalfootball.com. They even claim that Yaya is on the outs with the team. Clearly, right, which is why he keeps making the starting XI. (Sheesh.)

Wasn’t Cantalejo the ref for the Espanyol match? I’ll have to look, but I think he was.

So during the Espanyol match, Cantalejo red-carded one of theirs for a sketchy foul on Busquets, and awarded Eto’o the last-second, “tripped over a blade of grass” penalty. Now to be sure in real time, from the angle he had, it was a stone-cold penalty. T’was only on replay that you could see the reality.
