Barcelona 3 - 0 Lyon: Review and Highlights
By: Isaiah | September 20th, 2007Wow! I didn’t see this coming at all. I privately forecasted a 2-1 victory that I thought was perhaps being a little optimistic, but it turned out my pessimism didn’t take into account the fact that Lyon wasn’t going to show up. My man of the match is Toure Yaya, without a doubt. He shut down Juninho and showed off some excellent footskills. Sure, Leo created the first two goals, but only as a result of Toure’s ability to stifle the Lyon attack before it had a chance to cut through the backline.
There were scary moments, but Valdes never had to make a dramatic save, unlike Remi Vercoutre who looked more like Gregory Coupet than a second-string man as he parried what seemed to be a thousand shots on goal from Barca. I think that technically, Valdes didn’t actually have to make a single save as Lyon couldn’t muster a shot on goal. Things are heated at Inara’s place over the supposed “tactical mistakes” Perrin made in his lineup, but that Barcelona’s defense actually played pretty well for most of the game has to be taken into account as well.
Abidal had basically free-reign on the left and even though Zambrotta was pretty well tied down on the right with Kallstrom and who I think was Benzema, Messi played very well and kept Lyon on its heels. Not that there isn’t some merit to the Lyon fans screaming about defensive tactics, but Barcelona did play very well most of the game. I can’t really break down who the good and bad Lyon players were as I don’t know them and I don’t know how they usually play, but it seemed that Lyon was outclassed from start to finish. Inara says it could have been 7-0 and she’s probably right, especially if Messi had been more on target (a crazy thought).
Other notables: Henry’s first goal for Barcelona and Bojan Krkic’s competitive debut in the #27 youth jersey. While Henry’s goal was merely a tap in after a Gio dos Santos shot (his European debut for Barca), which happened to come after the world’s worst slide tackle. I mean, really, how badly can you misjudge a slide? Apparently much worse than I thought…Gio strolled by his defender and was automatically in on goal where his shot was deflected right into Henry’s path.
I was very surprised that Ronaldinho was substituted at 1-0 for Iniesta. I thought Andres would go on for Xavi, but it seemed to work out in the end, didn’t it? Iniesta is so good and provides so many assists that it’s absurd to keep him out of the lineup. But for Ronaldinho? Without Eto’o, I suppose it makes sense that Henry should be on the field for 90 minutes, but I still seem to react negatively to Ronaldinho’s absence. Bojan for Messi was a good switch, but Bojan didn’t have enough time (4 minutes) to really settle down. Still, he’s in the squad, which is great, and he’ll continue to grow for the next few years before he becomes a regular starter. He’s 17, after all, and only just (his birthday is August 20).
For now, enjoy the goals:
Oh and I realize few people will care about Barca-Lyon after Chelsea’s absurd decision to “part company” with Mourinho. Check out whatever Andy will say about it, but just know that I’m ignoring “the special one” for the time being (with the exception of this little blurb) because he won’t be signing on with anyone until January probably and while that will change things, I’ll wait until he’s officially announced before I weigh in on his potential affects both domestically and/or internationally.

maybe perrin felt the need to compensate for the fact that he was “forced” to use bodmer (a midfielder) as CB but really he could have used his new signing cleber anderson who was purchased to fill in for the injured cris. regardless, his decision to use a natural left back at left wing instead of the speedy and talented ben arfa plus his decision to put a right back at left back are just mysteries to me. he also benched kader keita who would have been much more attacking then govou (he finally made an appearance in the last 5 minutes and instantly made an impact but it was too late).

I did wonder about Keita’s absence, but I don’t know enough about Lyon to have made a truly detailed review of their formations. I think that the point is that Barcelona fielded their best possible starting 11 (with Eto’o and Puyol injured, anyway) and it paid off, for whatever reason.
Let’s hope it translates to the league now.

What do you think it means that Ronaldinho was benched before Barca put the game away? When he left, Lyon still had an opportunity to change the score sheet. Are there problems between him and Rijkaard?

Beautiful 2nd goal. finally a goal from open play. Ronaldinho has lost his magic, but he’s presence is good enough even though he can’t take on 2-3 players like before. I agree that Barca played well, but there was a lot of sloppy play too. Somehow their passes were not getting through, especially to Henry. Call me crazy, but I felt, the team were intentionally not passing the ball to Henry properly, he hardly got any help from the team. Even the last goal, Gio shud have passed it to Henry, instead of going to glory

Inara, I’ve been trying not to read too much into it. Lyon still had an obvious chance at tying or winning the game in the last 30 minutes, but I think the move was made with an eye on Gio entering a few minutes later. You can’t have Messi, Ronnie, Henry, Deco, and Gio on the field at the same time. It seemed to me at the time to be a tactical gamble by Rijkaard since Iniesta replaced him, thus providing more down-the-middle movement and a stronger defensive backbone. That said, I thought it was a mistake and voiced that opinion as it happened to whoever would listen, which turned out to be no one.
I wanted Deco to be swapped out for Iniesta or Gio (preferably the former) so that Ronnie would slip into the middle and Iniesta and Xavi would become mini-wings with Messi and Henry flitting around the top and sides (Abidal provided enough full wing movement to compensate for Ronnie’s absence there).

Rijkaard never makes a straight swap. If he want to change the forward line he always changes the midfield and then the forwards. how many times does he change formations when making a simple substitution. Oleguer always gets switched a few times during substitutions, from center to right back and then he’ll be subbed at right back. Iniesta will be brought on for a forward then Deco subbed for a forward. It’s silly but it’s the way he does it. Maybe it is just to make sure that the new player gets up to speed with the game before it could put pressure on the team

Ronaldinho deserved to be subbed out more than Xavi or Deco. Our midfield was outstanding, Ronnie had a good game by his recent standards but that doesn’t say much anymore.

Isaiah: I don’t want to get too excited yet, but…
MADRID (Thomson Financial) - Mediapro said it has accepted a proposal by Sogecable SA unit Audiovisual Sport (AVS) to share this season’s Spanish football broadcasting rights under the same conditions as last year.
In a statement, Mediapro said that it had told the Spanish Football League (LPF) that ‘this (decision) does not resolve the deeper problems which are currently under discussion’.
The production company and AVS are currently embroiled in a legal battle over joint exploitation of the football rights, with Mediapro claiming that a contract signed in 2006 is no longer valid.
Under the new agreement, the production company will return to an identical broadcasting schedule as last year’s season for premier league, second division and international broadcasting rights.

Am I mistaken, or does this mean Real Madrid and Barcelona are back in the states?

I totally agree with Nolan. Ronnie was alright, but no more than that, and deserved to go ahead of anyone else. Well, Henry wasn’t very impressive either, but I’m allowing him time to settle.
The defence has been a delight. Zambrotta-Marquez-Milito-Abidal should start every game until Puyol comes back.
