Getafe 4 - 0 Barcelona - Lowlights
By: Isaiah | May 11th, 2007Well, it’s my duty, I suppose, to provide the eulogy for Barcelona’s Copa del Rey campaign. Not that I want to think about this game now or ever again, but it has to be done, so here is a 5 minute “highlight” reel of the game :
Note the terrible defending on 3 of the goals and the fact that it could have been 8-0 by the end…Jorquera didn’t seem to make too many mistakes on those goals, but rather the defense didn’t step up for him. Unlucky by Eto’o and Saviola plus a near miss by Ronaldinho, but that’s how the chips fall sometimes. We had our chances and we didn’t take them, so we didn’t deserve to win. Still…arg.
As for what this means for the rest of the season, well, we’ll have to wait until the game in the Camp Nou against Betis on Sunday (1pm) in order to be able to say. It’s easy to get down on the team (I don’t get the whole Spanish capri pants thing ala Rafael Nadal, but all right), but they’re professional athletes and they can put this behind them. Hopefully, anyway. It was, apparently, a mistake to not start Messi and Thuram, but you take your chances in domestic cups which don’t really mean all that much (quick, off the top of your head, who won in 2006? 2005? 2004?*). I, for one, supported resting some of the players, especially if it was deemed necessary by the medical staff or by the player; it’s just that hindsight is 20/20 and if we start talking smack about the team as if they’re going to stumble and free fall out of the top 2, then they probably will. Fans must back their club now, not just demand trophies. Sure, it’s embarrassing, but it’s a reason to fight all the harder during the next game, not give up.
Enough ranting. Back on Monday with more.
*2006: Espanyol, 2005: Real Betis, 2004: Zaragoza. All previous winners can be found here. I had to look up 2005.

I’ve said in the past that Jorquera doesn’t convince me, especially with a shaky defence like ours in front of him, but this is not really his fault.
To put things in perspective for the fans who’ve only started supporting Barca recently, this is far from the worst collapse Barca have ever suffered. We’ve kind of got them down to an art form.

No matter what anyone says, I can’t fault Eto’o’s commitment and energy to Barca, and the pride he brings to the team. He’s right.

Wait, there was another team on the pitch? I swear I only saw one team playing, and that was Getafe…
Well, there’s nothing like a shock (more like electrocution by a live wire) to wake a team out of its funk and get them playing football again instead of a crappy combination of back passes.

Nolan, I accidentally deleted your comment, I’m sorry about that. What it said was basically that he can’t wait for the season to end so we can start rebuilding.
The season isn’t done yet! Yes, we were trash out there against Getafe and we couldn’t put anything away against Betis, but the season is far from over. 4 games left! We can do this!

After my midweek rant have Barce got the bottle to win La Liga with Madrid breathing down their necks? looks like a resounding no another poor performance at home when it matters most. Whats happended with Barca and the big stage they just cant handle it anymore.

You’re right, Tim, that it’s beginning to look that way, but anything can happen and at this point, I’m hoping it does. Atletico are coming on at the wrong moment for us and that’s unfortunate, but at least now Madrid have to play away from home (sure, it’s only Huelva, but it was only Betis…)
There is hope yet!
