Samuel Eto’o out for 2 months
By: Isaiah | August 30th, 2007During the Gamper Cup last night, Samuel Eto’o came on as a second half sub and promptly tore a muscle in his right calf (which could be a tendon in his thigh). I was watching and the injury was without contact and didn’t look like anything at all, except that Eto’o was definitely on the ground and looked to be in considerable pain. He limped off, without any help, and what was originally believed to be a minor tweak turned out to be a tear. He may or may not have surgery, which may or may not speed his recovery. Soccernet reports a right thigh problem, UEFA.com a right calf problem, but whatever it is, it’s still 8 weeks out).
If Eto’o misses 8 weeks, he will miss through the last week of October, meaning he is supposedly going to return for the Almeria or Valladolid games. It would also mean he will miss the first 3 Champions League games (the draw for which is later today).
While it’s never good to have a superstar get injured, it will mean that the squad is going to gel more quickly as there will be fewer options up front. Henry will start, which will appease his ego, and Gio will get quality sub minutes. The problem will certainly be when Eto’o returns to action (again). Hopefully he will delay himself more than he did the last time and come back completely healthy, rather than only 80% or so like last time.
I hope Sam gets better quickly, but he shouldn’t push himself. FCB has a enough backups to win the league without him, much less play well for 2 months.

It’s the right tendon. *sigh*
I just feel bad for him personally, having just come back from injury.

Yo this is so sad for him. At least Cameroon is already in the African Cup of nations and Barcelona won’t miss him at the beginning of the season but it’s a pity for him to get injured again.

This is a serious blow. I think there’s a certain over-confidence that we have enough goal-scoring resources at our disposal. But these resources are unproven in La Liga. I’m not so sanguine that Henry will make up for Eto’o’s absence. The Frenchman is returning from injury himself, and he may need some time to get up to La Liga’s speed (figuratively speaking). Dos Santos is terrific, but it’s a lot to ask the kid to carry such a burden. So I’m seriously worried …

I love watching Eto’o play. At least I did about 10 year ago when we all last saw him. Hope he heals soon.

Bobby’s right, and our 2 currently available center forwards aren’t even fit, since Guddy and Henry are both returning from injury. But at least we’ve got more options this time.
