A brief update
By: Isaiah | October 20th, 2008Thanks to Kevin, we know what we did and how we did it this weekend, but I thought it was relevant to our on-going discussions about the league in general to update everyone on what’s happening at the other end of the table, where Gijon and Real Betis answered the bell this time around:
Because our resident Madrileño, John, has so kindly offered a bet of a round of beers to myself and Kevin on whether or not Gijon will stay up (John says they will, Kevin and I say they won’t), let’s start with them:
They won at home 2-1 against Osasuna, who fell below them into the relegation zone. I wrote last week that, “No one has [scored] more than 1 goal against Osasuna,” but I guess that goes out the door now. Gijon ponied up and won, even though Santi Ezquerro (remember him?) scored for Osasuna. So now Gijon are 1 point clear of the drop zone, meaning I currently stand at -1 in the beer column. Damn you, Gijon.*
Now to Betis: I wrote last week that “I’m going to put my money on you staying up by beating the pants off several weaker sides.” That they did, smacking Mallorca with a 3-0 loss. The Soccernet match report suggests it was a pretty good blowout (I didn’t see the match), so it’s nice to see/read that I at least called them right for a week.
That’s all for right now; tomorrow will be a preview of the Champions League FC Basel game.

*I’m actually rooting against myself on this one, but I do think Gijon is going down. The only way they don’t is by someone else being worse (as opposed to them being better).
