Barca v Malaga preview, a.k.a. “How do you spell danger?” 2 p.m. Sunday, on We Can’t See it Except on the Web
By: Kevin | March 21st, 2009
Splish, splash. We all remember the last time we faced Malaga, a team whose name sounds like the sound that you make before you hock a loogie (loogy? It always seems like such a word should be masculine rather than feminine, given its attendant….off track….uh, oh).
It didn’t just rain, it did a Biblical thing that had people lining stuff up two by two, just in case. And a football game broke out. It was back in November, and we put them to the sword 4-1 on a waterlogged pitch in which passes landed with a splash. Xavi got a brace, in case y’all don’t remember, and a good time was had by all.
That was then, and this is now.
Malaga is, it’s safe to say, the surprise of the Liga. After they were promoted the general worldview was “Hope you boys bought a round-trip ticket back to La Segunda.” The lads from Malaga giggled and said “No, but we bought one to the freakin’ UEFA Cup, beeyotches.” That’s probably where they’re headed, given that they sit sixth place in the Liga, and aren’t likely to fall much below those second-tier European spots.
Not bad, right? But they have some problems, namely, us.
Had this Malaga match come a few weeks prior, I’d be worried. To death. Because they’re just the kind of scrappy, rock-solid side that would give us a planet of difficulty. But for us, the superlatives are back. First it was Lyon, and people saying that they’d never seen a better half of football….until the Almeria match. Then they’d never seen a better stretch of football. The swagger is back, the elegance is back, and the wins are back. And we’re at home. Can there be any impediments to us getting knee-deep in some Malaga ass?
Well, they could park the bus, but I just don’t figure that to work, particularly not with a passel of rarin’-to-go lads who have had nothing to do but rest. No three matches in eight days, no Copa, no Champions League. Just rest, and thinking about putting the smack down on the next fool who darkens our doorstep. Plus I installed my BARCA 4 license plate and FC Barcelona license plate holder. So I pity da fools, because all the portents say Victim Time.
Sorry Malaga, but that’s you.
Now, Malaga do have some hopes: The week of rest did more harm than good; We’re so focused on the upcoming Bayern tie that we forget to take of business; Kryptonite, which is the only thing that can neutalize The Yaya.
Aside from that, they’re going down, because Guardiola is going to roll out the “Damn, we’re serious” lineup of: Valdes, Alves, Marquez, Pique, Sylvinho, Yaya, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Henry and Eto’o. We might see Busquets in that Yaya role, to facilitate ball control, but given that Malaga thrives on the counter, I’d rather see the Destroyer back there.
Eto’o is due, and Sylvinho has been playing very well of late, deserving the start over “Hai Karate” Caceres, though we might see the mop-topped Uruguayan at some point, just to get some blood in his legs. We’re also going to see us some Krkic, because Guardiola will want to keep The Kid rocking and riding high, after his Almeria brace.
More importantly, there is some coaching mind-screwing going on even as I type this, with Guardiola making ab-so-freakin-lutely certain that our lads think the team from Malaga wants their lunch money, has said bad things about Xavi’s mama and called Messi a midget (not “little person.” Midget.) He’ll be doing everything short of using cattle prods to get our boys to understand that matches such as these, with so much to look forward to on the grand European stage, are where championships can be lost, or solidified.
Recent form has been interesting, particularly if you look at the last 5 Liga matches.
Us:
2-0 over Almeria
2-0 over Athletic Bilbao
3-4 to Atletico Madrid
1-2 to Espanyol
1-1 with Betis
Them:
2-2 with Sevilla
2-1 over Getafe
0-2 to Recreativo (say what now?)
3-1 over Valladolid
1-1 with Valencia
Yes, I’m saying that they have a better record over the last 5 Liga matches than us.
Not that it will matter.
My prediction is 3-1, with goals from Eto’o, Iniesta and Messi.
And that’s what I know.
In the ensuing discussion thread, please post working links for Web viewing of the match, as that’s how we’ll all be watching it. It’s still not certain why GolTV is forsaking us, but I’m betting that it has much to do with monied men pissing on the wall marked Fan Devotion.
Bastards.

Mmh… I think I’ve heard of something similar in relation to the German contract for La Liga.
I can remember several matches that took place on Sunday, 17:00 CET which “Premiere” (German Pay-TV) couldn’t show live either, so they showed it as a re-live on 19:00. Maybe GolTV has a similar problem there (although Barca’s match starts at 19:00).
I don’t know if it was this or last season, but I can remember that for the first playdays of La Liga, the screen stayed black in Germany due to problems with the Spanish broadcasting rights holder…Posted from

Indeed. Welcome to big-time sports, right? NFL fans are very familiar with home-team blackout rules and restrictions, as are NBA hoops fans. And truth be told, U.S. sports fans have no idea how expensive sports can be, compared to our European brethren.
During my annual vacation in France, I always marvel at how all sports except for Les Bleus matches, are on pay TV. All. Period. Yes, cable TV is technically pay TV, but it isn’t as expensive for us. Crazy.
Here’s hoping GolTV gets it all sorted out. The new contract is good news. And Fox Soccer will be doing the rebroadcast Friday afternoon as usual, which might be a long wait for the review, so be consoled by my preview.

Hi guys, since GolTv is not showing the game tomorrow, can anyone recommend a site for a relatively decent feed? I care less about commentary (don’t care if it’s a foreign language) and more about ease of watching (don’t want to sign up) and picture feed. Any suggestions?

rojadirecta.com and look up the game.
BTW, the newest MarcaToons:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXWu0xGGV60Raul takes Messi up to the mountains because the pressure is supposedly higher. He proceeds to try to scare Messi in order so that Madrid can win something besides an academy award for Casillas’ acting skills. Messi remains unfazed and says “You’ve got nothing to do, pibe. NOTHING scares me. I didn’t get scared the first time I saw Yaya Toure naked so its pretty much useless to keep trying to scare me.”

A goal by Iniesta? Oh my! Bold. He’s not due to score for another 4 years, according to his stats.
Also according to the numbers: He will hit the post. 5 times.
I’ll be praying for a breeze to strike in the right direction.

They’ve been shaving the posts at Camp Nou, OhYes. So Iniesta should be good to go.
On another note, Fulham? Man U is going belly up at the wrong time. And I don’t know if anyone watched the Arsenal match. Granted it was Newcastle, but man they knocked in some pretty goals.

@ Josh, you can change the language of the commentary to english on Jazeera!

Just registered and set it all up. There will definitely be a live blog thingamabobby tomorrow for the match.
And let’s make Isaiah do the review, since he’ll be able to watch it on Fox Soccer this Friday. T’will be a role reversal, and I’ll be getting geared up for the beginning of the Formula One season, as well.

Without Pique (and Caceres “over” the defense) Barça will lose the match: 3-2 (one by Bojan)

I’ve seen the Arsenal match. I wish Arshavin would have scored, he’s a great player. But Nasri is also getting better from game to game. If Arsenal can keep Fabregas, they might kick ass next season with Nasri, Arshavin, Walcott, Fabregas and even Vela (I think this guy has a bright future and he is the new hope for Mexico, not Giovani Dos Santos).
It’s sad that Arshavin isn’t allowed to play in the CL, without him and all the other injured stars it will be hard against ManU albeit the Mancunians aren’t invincible any longer.Posted from

Can someone, please, explain to me why Arshavin isn’t allowed to play in Champions league? I know he played there with Zenit, but apparently I don’t understand something about those UEFA rules. I mean, if Real Madrid were allowed to enter either Huntelaar or Diarra, then why isn’t Arsenal allowed to do the same? Or did they buy another player who already had played in Champions league or UEFA Cup already?

hmm, think it will be hard for u to pull it off JC. I know the guy who lives next to my apartment well, so we set up a connection between his reciever and my TV in a way that would allow me to view what he is viewing. Of course that means I can not change channels or anything, but he is a barca fan too so it is never a problem. In any case, I heard that subscription costs only about 11 KD, which would mean about $40 a month.

@ Kevin….Are you using another Liveblog service? I just set up the today’s match blog at CoverItLive and sent the code to Isaiah with the hopes of him posting it to the blog. But, if you’re doing something else, that’s fine. I just figured if no one else was able, I’d set it up and facilitate it. If you’d like me to monitor the blog, let me know what your email address is and I’ll send the CoverItLive event code to you.

JeffP, send me the code and I’ll post it. You can go ahead and monitor. I hadn’t heard anything, so I went ahead and set up a CoverItLive account.
You did great the last time, so let’s go ahead and maintain that setup. Just send me the code, and I’ll set it up. I’m kevvwill@yahoo.com.

I love these international breaks! Sure it gets us away from our team, but a change of pace can be nice sometimes.

Tajh, there won’t be many players resting during the next 2 weeks because we have so many internationals who are quite certain starters for their respective nation.

Liva, Arshavin can’t play because he was cup tied to the Champions League. The reason why one of Diarra and Huntelaar could play was because both Portsmouth and Ajax played in the Uefa Cup, so they weren’t cup-tied to the Champions League the way Arshavin is.

Oh, ok, now I understand. Thanks, Colby.
I thought that there are the same rules for players from both Champions league and UEFA Cup.Posted from
