Barcelona - Espanyol: Saturday 2pmEST (GolTV)

By: Isaiah | April 18th, 2008

So it’s another derby, another day, right? Weeellll, it’s more like we haven’t gotten the full measure of revenge for Tamudo scoring that title-destroying goal against us last year, so not only do we need to continue their losing streak (4 straight at the moment, with nary a goal to show for their so-called efforts) and push them completely out of contention for a European spot. Am I bitter? Goddamned right I’m bitter. The periquitos can bite the big one, if you ask me, if only for the way they celebrated RM getting the title last year because of them. But obviously there’s mucho morbo involved in this match without that.

It’s a derby, people, so let’s derby up! Form goes out the window (theirs and ours) and the yellow cards come out of the pockets (and hopefully the white hankies go into the vacated pantspace). I want to see blood!* It should be a thoroughly engrossing match, though, especially if you consider our potential lineups…

The squad: Valdés, Pinto, Zambrotta, Puyol, Milito, Márquez, Sylvinho, Abidal, Xavi, Touré, Iniesta, Deco, Gudjohnsen, Messi, Eto’o, Bojan, Henry, Giovani

The inclusion of Deco is a huge positive for us, but nothing is bigger than Iniesta’s availability. I guess his slipped meniscus wasn’t so bad, after all. YAY!!! SPF45 is a major part of our squad and can provide versatility that few others can. If we can reduce the amount of running our midfield has to do in this game, we’ll be fresher and better equipped to take on ManU on Wednesday.

Our home form is so much better than our away form it’s actually just not funny. There’s no humor in it. Unless you’re the type who laughs at roadkill. Since we’re so good at home and we’re going to come out fired up, I don’t know if a down-in-the-dumps Espanyol is going to have 90 minutes of up-tempo soccer in them, but, like I said, it’s derby time and no one quits in those moments.

It’ll be hard-fought game and for that reason I’m going to give us just a 2-1 victory. Any other team with such a terrible recent record and I’d say 2-0 at least, but since Espanyol isn’t any other team, we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt to improve on their scoring issues.

Sorry this post is so short, but that’s how it’s got to be. I am going to try to make it to Nevada Smiths tomorrow to watch it, but my lady’s parents are in town and might want me to hang out with them. Not that I don’t like them, but you know, Barcelona…But please, discuss amongst yourselves what will happen on the morrow. And don’t forget to visit the Where to Watch page to find out what’s new (and there are some new places!)

Here we go with the nicknames.

You aren’t going to be like Baker and Kelly when they drew teams out of a pot, then drew another team name that they would call the first team and then drew a coach for the fake team that really was a real one and then drew them a ground as well?

    Yeah, it was confusing.

Ryan, I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Ballbeav, yeah, I saw that, but without GolTV or some crazy satellite channel it won’t show regular La Liga games. And I haven’t gotten around to researching it enough to see if they have those channels…I will add it with a disclaimer as soon as I can (tomorrow probably, no time now)

llobster, “santi claus” and “elfmilson” (great name for the latter!), but neither is in the squad list, so neither can play. It’s up to the others to come through.

Also, I’ll be at Nevada Smith’s tomorrow for the game wearing a red Kansas Jayhawks hat and my Camp Nou 50 year jersey. And I have glasses. Feel free to scream out “ISAIAH FROM THE OFFISDE!!!” and I’ll answer if I hear you.

    It’s only a half hour in but…

United look shaky, just a little off. If the ref hadn’t swallowed his whistle, they might be two down…

Friedal saves a CR header, he is dynamite on set pieces. Barca really have to play well there.

Well… at least a good performance of Barca before the semi against Man u. We look more united and play like a team. First half was a disaster by putting Gio and Guddy as first eleven. 2nd half was interesting to watch. But looks like we missing the great incredible and magical touch by Ronnie. Eto and Messi shows a good combination. Bojan looks tired. Credits for Kameni. He’s the MAN of The Match.

I really confident that we can beat Man u if we play during the 2nd half. Vamos Barca

Good performance but Espanyol were just in the hunt for a nil-nil. Disappointing that they didn’t want to play. That is one thing that is for certain, that Man Utd will come to play. Just hoping to see that second half for 180mins against them.
Messi and Iniesta were lively. Bojan was continually fouled and Zabaleta could have been carded on numerous occasions. Eto’o wasn’t in the best. He tries harder than anyone but was just a little off today.
I was amazed that Deco didn’t get a runout though. Strange decision but it wouldn’t be Rijkaard’s first.
Coincidentally, Mourinho said that he is ready to come back into management. Not implying anything, merely saying

So I didn’t go to Nevada Smiths. I’m sorry if you showed up hoping to bathe in my glorious afterglow. A friend called and we met up in Brooklyn. What can I say? Other than fuck Gudjohnsen. Way to blow it, buddy.

    Goddamit. There goes the league.
