Barcelona – Getafe: Sunday 3pmEST

By: Isaiah | April 4th, 2008

[Updated Version]
Just an FYI for all the readers: The Offside is listed as the 35th most powerful blog in the entire universe by The Guardian. Check it out. How cool is this!? We’ve also received just over 9,500 visitors last month (half of them are Kevin’s mother logging on from various computers around the globe, of course, but whatever) and we here at the Offside would like to thank all of you for visiting us and making us more powerful than that friggin Peteite Anglaise character as well as making us here at the Barcelona portion a more-visited site than Real Madrid. Small victories, people, small victories.

To the Preview:

This is a game primarily to stay within touching distance of first place, but it is also a game of revenge. We lost 2-0 at the Alfonso Perez back in November and I, for one, want to see El Geta dropped like it’s hot. Check, check, check out the references on Isaiah (and my melodies)! 2-0 is a good scoreline for many reasons, not the least of which is because it would be another clean sheet, something we could really use right now in the league.

As I reported before, Ronaldinho and Deco are back to full training, and Messi is back in Barcelona. Deco appears to have limped out of training on Thursday and as of yet there’s no word on his fitness. He has been training the last few days with the squad even thoug he hasn’t received full medical clearance. Why rush him back just to have him injured again? And that brings me to Messi’s statements yesterday about his return timetable. He stated that if it were up to him, he’d play against Getafe. How about no? I mean, I would love to see a fully-fit Messi on the field, but please note those two words: fully-fit. There’s no reason to rush him back only to have him injured again this year.

Let’s look at this way: Would you sacrifice Messi’s future performances for a title this year? I, for one, would not. Looking at it that way, how can we press him to return early? Certainly he and the medical staff know better what is required to be a professional soccer player and what Messi’s body in particular require in order to maintain a sustained athletic endeavor such as a soccer season, however, as someone who has played a sport, I recognize that there is pressure from the fans and pressure from oneself to get out there and play. I’m sure that Messi is furious about his injury and would love nothing more than to be playing right now, but instead of forcing himself back out onto the field early as he’s done in the past and as Eto’o has done, he should take heed of what is happening to Deco and work through the problem entirely before returning. Even if it costs us a championship, I think he’ll bring us enough in the future if he’s healthy to more than make up for that.

Deco too, should sit out if he’s still feeling pain. Again, I’d love to see him in the side, but not at the risk of his career or season. Getafe is not Real Madrid, so don’t force yourself back for it if you’re not up for the challenge. Go hang with Jaciara like the rest of us would be doing if we were you.

We’ll know before we begin the game what kind of a mountain we have to climb. Mallorca hosts Real Madrid on Saturday while Sevilla faces off against Villarreal in a 1pm Sunday game. So we’ll know if we’re 10, 8 or 7 points behind before we begin. Regardless, we need 3 points to stay within striking distance, so we better play the old-fashioned, Greek way: balls out.

Getafe, los azulones, the other other team in Madrid, is having a decent year so far. They’re in 11th place, 6 points removed from the relegation zone (what a psycho race that’s going to be!) and are 11W-6D-11L overall. Their away form has been completely “meh” in that they’re 5W-3D-8L with 19 goals for and 21 against. Barcelona, being 13W-0D-2L 38GF 9GA,at home, is certainly the favorite to come away with all 3 points. However, we know that Geta can play with us as well as with the big boys. They beat Real Madrid at the Bernabeu through Uche’s strike following that bizarre set of circumstances.

Kevin will be updating this post with squads and lineups and whatnot as the time gets closer. I, on the other hand, will be doing vicious manual labor under the whip of my woman, who is moving. Sigh. But then at 8:47pm Eastern Standard Time, the mother of all battles begins: UNC and Kansas in the Final Freaking Four. And yours truly will be screaming. A lot. And hopefully not in pain.

[Update]
The squad the same as the one that went to Germany, meaning no Ronaldinho and no Deco:
Valdés, Pinto, Thuram, Zambrotta, Sylvinho, Abidal, Edmílson, Milito, Puyol, Márquez, Touré Yaya, Gudjohnsen, Xavi, Iniesta, Bojan, Henry, Giovani, Eto’o.

I’m guess we’ll see the same starting lineup as well:
Valdes, Zambrotta, Puyol, Milito, Abidal, Toure, Xavi, Iniesta, Henry, Bojan, Eto’o

If we win Champions league and we finish 3rd in La Liga, do we have to qualify for next year’s Champions league?

Ciaran said it best, “I love Ronaldinho but I love Barca more…” I think we all know his days are numbered and I wouldn’t disagree. Ronnie’s presence this season has been more of a distraction than a benefit. He could definitely use some new scenery, but I suppose I wanted to see a little more compassion, which was well provided by Ciaran. Thank you.

Kxevin and Ciaran, I agree with your Krkic, Eto’o, Messi assessment. The right and center have good movement into the box and I understand positioning is a loose term with Barca, but the bigger question…do we have a gap on the front left? This was a space that a fully-fit Ronaldinho filled well and Henry has worked on morphing into, but do you see a weakness here? Maybe I’m wrong, it just seems as if we’ve given up a lot of possession in this vicinity as of late.

I have some great new Barca poll questions at http://bigskysprite.blogspot.com/
    Come on over and vote!

That’s what I call, academically, The Henry Complexity. He’s trying to play there, but he really shouldn’t be. His ideal role is one already filled by Eto’o. As I said previously, Henry should start in that role, but the divisive pout factor via Eto’o precludes that possibility.

Hopes were high that Dos Santos would fill that role. I’d move up Iniesta, who is extremely versatile and can keep the ball. The only question is one of size and strength. Ideally, you want a player there who can take the abuse from a defender and still retain possession.

I don’t think we have an answer on the team right now, with an injured Ronaldinho.

@JC: yes, Barca would start in the third qualifying round. The only thing the winner gets for the next season is the winner displaces another team if they do not finish in the top four.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Champions_League#Qualification

@ Cirian: I hear you, I think the arguments are academic now. It’s clear ‘dinho’s agent / brother has shopped him out, and that AC Milan wants him badly. That means Berlusconi will grease whatever palms he needs to to get ‘dinho, there is almost no chance he plays for Barca next season. I would guess 80% chance AC Milan, then maybe 10% each that Inter or Juve throws a ton of money out to keep him from ACM.

I will say I completely disagree that he was a distraction for his teammates: both Eto’o and Messi strongly came out in support of him as recently as this week. He was a distraction to the press and the fans, but that’s how it goes in the 24 hour news cycle, you have to fill the papers somehow.

I think that publicly, yes, teammates came out in support of him. That’s what you do in public.

But in the locker room, the effect of something such as that must have been significant. The guys are killing themselves to help the side, and here this one player is, having, shall we say, issues. It can’t help. Then there’s the psychological effect, as I’ve said before, of waiting for him to return.

The good thing about this latest injury, real or imagined, is that he’s done for the year, and the lads can draw an “x” through his name in their heads.

AC Milan is looking most likely, though I wouldn’t rule out Juventus. Then again, if Mourinho precipitates a mass exodus of talent from Chelsea, Abramovich might want to splash a ton of dough on a “serious” signing.

Is it match time yet? The waiting always kills me, particularly when the Evil Empire stumbles, giving us an opportunity.

A sign in the stands before the game:

“Cruyff, por que no te callas? Roni, no te vayas!”

Brilliant. We cules are split like the Democratic Party over this Ronnie issue.

    I should provide a translation:

“Cruyff, why don’t you shut up? Ronnie, don’t leave.” Only it rhymes in Spanish.

This is what I get for drinking moonshine. Woke up late for this match. Barca looking average like always since I started tuning in. Just read the news on Ronnie; I give up on him. I did say before that we should leave him alone and give him time but its getting pretty ridiculous.

So far, almost total domination by Barcelona, but no goals thanks to Eto’o failing to find the net from 8 yards out. Pato with a good save on it, but still, you have to score those.

The evidence is clear that the players support Ronnie, and that he was right that there was something wrong with his leg.

Eto’o and Messi didn’t make simple “We support Ronnie” lip service, in fact Messi challenged the fans by saying they showed a lack of respect for what Ronnie has achieved for Barca. He basically called out cules and all the muckrakers over at Sport and EMD. That’s not just public support, those are strong words that he didn’t have to say unless he meant them. It’s also no coincidence that the players who know Ronnie and see his situation up close support him, while his detractors are mostly opinion writers and people removed from the situation.

Ronnie was also vindicated on the injury. As soon as he trained, he tore a muscle. That was medically proven by MRI.

This is hard evidence. All talk of a broken locker room that has turned on Ronnie is mere speculation. Plenty of locker rooms go public when there is a situation that is “tearing the locker room apart”.

I guess people just have to have a scapegoat when things aren’t going the way they hope. Why people chose Ronnie, rather than Abidal who choked away points won much of the season and has accomplished nothing for the blaugrana, I can’t understand.

Oh, Ronaldinho isn’t a scapegoat. I was calling for his sale even when he was healthy, and respect the Barca players for not going public with any locker room stuff. They even laughed off the “black sheep” business.

My thoughts on Ronaldinho and his effectiveness have been well documented. But succinctly: He’s been a waste for us all season, from showing up not ready to play to the dubious injuries and dalliances with other teams/rumor mills. Rumors aren’t his fault, but they don’t come out of the blue, either. Now he’s really injured. That’s unfortunate, but he should still be on the next train out of Barcelona.

Everybody has had their moment with the goat horns this season, from A (Abidal) to Z (Zambrotta). There isn’t one scapegoat, though Rijkaard will take the fall (and he should for many reasons having little to do with finding a scapegoat).

I don’t think Ronaldinho wants to play in Barcelona any longer, injured or not. It’s a damaged relationship, not because of actions by any press, bystanders or fans. Something happened, and we might never discover what it was. Maybe the fans in Barcelona are too demanding. Maybe the press is too harsh. Maybe, maybe, maybe. I dunno.

But opinions, mine included, are like bungholes. Everybody has ‘em. And all combined, they aren’t worth much. But it’s fun to speculate.

He’s been brilliant, and the way that he used to be will be a loss. But in my opinion (see above, re: bungholes) the team has to move on.

I think the problem is that Ronaldinho was the best player in the world by 25 and three years later, when he should be even better, he is not scratching the surface. People expect the best and haven’t seen anything this season.
The fact that this conversation has been going on for 18months is distraction enough. Like I said, he took the summer off after last season being poor just so he could come back at 100% and has still not even got fit. Forget injuries… they happen, but there does not seem to be the will to win that there once was.
