Büyümek eski kesintisiz: Fenerbahçe and Roberto Carlos, sittin’ in a tree
By: Isaiah | June 6th, 2007Roberto Carlos has signed a deal with Turkish club Fenerbahçe that will take effect after the end of the current season.* Soccernet’s report on the matter didn’t mention anything about the length of the contract, but it shouldn’t be assumed it’s longer than a year simply because of the player’s age. The reason this is news for a Barcelona blogger isn’t because Roberto Carlos is so great or terrible that his absence or continued presence would have a massive effect on the Madrid defense or the 2007-08 title chase, but because it is suggestive of what could be coming over the course of this off-season in the capital. If Gabriel Heinze replaces his South American counterpart, all the better for Barcelona as Heinze freaking sucks. I mean that, too. I really think he’s positionally-challenged. Perhaps he’s decent enough on the ball, but even there he’s just that: decent. Roberto Carlos remains, even in his “old age,” capable of outplaying Heinze. Still, the man with the ketchup company name is rumored to be on his way to the Bernabeu. Good. Also, since the Roberto Carlos move is on a free, Real Madrid doesn’t benefit financially from it and as they’re no Chelsea, they’ll end up spending tons of money this summer to either attempt a defense of their title or push towards finally ending their barren streak.
*For all of you who don’t have friends kind enough to translate things into Turkish for you, the title of this post apparently means something close to “Let’s grow old together.”
