Justice, passion and l’affaire Eto’o (a musing)
By: Kevin | May 18th, 2009
So. On Sunday, we lost a meaningless game, playing with a B side, Bojan and Eto’o.
Our very own (as I call him) Cranky Cameroonian squandered chance after chance after chance as he sinks, knees-deep into a scoring malaise.
My review gave him a 1, a score that, surprisingly, nobody argued with. Cries went up to “Sell, sell, sell!” Others said “You people are being typical cules in looking a gift horse in the mouth and spitting in its face.
Lady Justice says “Hmmm.”
In looking at the history of this season, an historic one which has our beloved side going for the treble in less than two weeks’ time, it’s worth noting that people have not been kind to a raft of players. Let’s look at it all.
Abidal He’s a disaster waiting to happen, by many accounts. After his red cards, a few folks want him out of town on a rail, or at least never playing for the side again. He’s been in the crosshairs of many a cule for quite some time, for failings that warrant the death penalty. “Sell, sell, sell!”
And yet, his pace, positioning and of late, increasing willingness to become part of the offense have made him a very valuable part of the side. His pace and range at left back means that others can shift to cover Alves’ rambling runs, because Abidal has sideline to sideline pace and range.
Valdes Asenjo, Casillas, Buffon and Cech are but a few of the names that have been offered up as replacements for our insufferably crappy keeper, one so awful he’ll be getting the Zamora for the statistically best keeper.
“Doesn’t matter. He’s shit, and is one mistake away from killing the side,” right? True, but what keeper isn’t? Casillas spilled that easy shot on Saturday, gifting Villarreal the title and us the crown. Buffon’s had some howlers, Cech was caught flat-footed as Iniesta hammered the Golden Strike. It’s just part of being keeper.
Has Valdes cost the side matches? Yes. One. Espanyol, when he gaffed the clearance directly to the attacker, who put the shot away. Reasons are found not to trust him. It’s always “one mistake away.” Alves cost us the Athletico match by lazily letting Aguero take that pass. Or is it Puyol’s loss for being snookered by Aguero? If that’s the case, then Puyol has cost us two matches this season, that one and Villarreal, in which he botched up a play that he makes 9 out of 10 times.
Yet Valdes is still “one mistake away,” a man without whom we wouldn’t be in the Champions League final, and probably wouldn’t have won the first Clasico, as he parried away one long-range blast destined to go in, then stonewalled Drenthe. He stopped Chelsea time and again, but still, he’s “one mistake away.”
Henry There are still people who want to sell the Frenchman, who believed after last season that we had been sold a bill of goods by a sniggering Wenger, who pawned off an over-the-hill striker for crazy dosh.
Are there any Gunners fans who wouldn’t want Henry in the side right now? Yet some cules don’t, and are ready to lash into him the first patch of bad play, or run of poor finishes that he makes. “Sell, sell, sell!”
Has Henry cost the side matches with his poor finishing? Not that I can recall. If someone can, please refresh my memory. Has he won matches with his finishing? You bet. He single-handedly killed Valencia, was involved in every goal in another match, got us the precious away goal against Lyon….the list goes on.
And yet….
Now it’s Eto’o’s turn, and people are leaping to his defense in a way that hardly anyone does when it’s Abidal’s, Henry’s or Valdes’ turn in the barrel. Nobody is screaming “Sell, sell, sell” at Alves, who has been spraying crosses and passes all over the joint for the last month now, and gives up fouls.
So here’s my question, after this long-ass setup: What’s the reason? Why are some people one mistake away from being cast onto the scrap heap, and others, no matter what they do, are defended? Let’s look at Eto’o by way of example.
Last season he said, “No silver, no me.” He was part of the “surplus to requirements” group, but stalled his way into staying with the side by refusing to discuss arrangements, or setting crazy salary demands. He played his way back into the good graces of fans by popping in a rather gaudy 29 goals. He also has a history of scoring goals like crazy for Barcelona, has an astonishing work rate and ethic, and creates chaos, which leads to scoring chances for other front-line players.
So is he crap or is he great? Or does it really matter?
Part of why I started the HFC (Henry Fairness Committee, for newcomers) is because I felt as though he wasn’t getting a fair shake. Even when he wasn’t finishing, he was doing other things. So is the different standard because he isn’t deep-down Barca, like Eto’o? Or is it simple time in grade, and he hasn’t been here long enough?
If that last is the case, what about Valdes?
What I want, and all that I want, is for people to be fair to our players. They can have crappy matches, and we, as people who love the side, have every right to call them on it. But if Messi is crap, call him on it. Don’t make excuses for his play, that some of us might not make for Valdes, or Henry, or Abidal.
We aren’t going to sell a guy for having a bad match, right? Nor should we. The answer is to look at the player over the season, and to recognize that our starting XI, every last one of them, has been immensely valuable in creating this Dream Season.
Let’s hear it, folks.

HEY!!!! This just in: http://fcbtransfers.blogspot.com/2009/05/medical-henry-and-iniesta-available-for.html
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/may/19/andres-iniesta-thierry-henry-barcelona
Henry and Iniesta have been passed fit by the medical staff, and will play in the CL final. I’m doing my happy dance of joy and thankfully, nobody can see me doing it.
–In other news, Lahm offered himself to us. Don’t think so, especially not at the price (25-30 million). Good buy at 15-20, even with his pace complexities.
–Van Persie has re-entered the picture in light of the Ribery thing suddenly becoming messy. And he could be available for cheap! It’s probably just a negotiating ploy to get even more dosh out of Arsenal, so we shouldn’t get too riled up.
–And excellent comments, everyone. Keep ‘em coming.

Well folks, I’m back from a small vacation in which I got to meet Kevin and john and watch our boys blow about a billion chances. Fun times, for sure.
A flurry of posts to come soon. I’ve got a lot to lay on you folks before Osasuna and before MANCHESTER UNITED IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL IN EIGHT MORE DAYS HOLY CRAP I AM SO EXCITED IT’S HARD TO THINK.

Tajh may have nailed the starting lineup, actually. I don’t like it, but I’m going to bet that it’s right.

@Jason: GUDJOHNSEN??!!! Is the plan to have Man U rolling on the pitch laughing, which will help us score the first goal?
If Gudjohnsen had played in a fashion that warranted his inclusion in such an important lineup, I’d be all for it. I just don’t think his pace or ball skills are up to it. My proposed lineup:
————————-Valdes————————
Puyol———-Pique———–Caceres———Sylvinho
———————-The Yaya————————-
————-Xavi————————-Iniesta——
Messi—————-Henry——————–Krkic—-I would keep Eto’o as a second-half match changer for when the Man U defenders got tired from chasing around Messi, Iniesta and Henry, a la Larsson or Giuly.

+ 1 to Hector’s comments, and congrats on another very thoughtful and interesting post Kxevin.

I don’t see whats wrong with playing gudjohnsen. Eto for the last 2 years has been mostly ueselss against English teams.

It so hard to make a decision like keeping Eto’o on the bench in the Champins League Final. It might be necessary but it might be the rashest stupidest decision ever. Most definately you can’t bench him for Gudjohnsen. The thing is that with his bad form we can’t help but question him. What was interesting about the Mallorca match was that he scored perhaps the most difficult of all his chances.
So I don’t know, I think Henry should play CF but he and Eto’o can switch it up.
To the Man U fans out there do you guys think the Man U will park the bus or will they come out and play? What do you guys expect SAF to do?

Ok guys, are we really debating what the starting lineup will be? After what we have seen Pep do in the last two important matchups (Chelsea and Copa)…..
You heard it here first, if Henry and Iniesta are match fit the lineup without a doubt will be as follows:
VV, Puyol, Toure, Pique, Sylvinho*, Keita, Iniesta, Xavi, Messi, Etoo, Henry.
*only unkown.
Sylvinho is the tossup. I will eat shave my head and grow a handlebar moustache if Pep changes things up……..

I dont know what “eat shave my head” means

Thanks, Colin, but the post was sparked by all of the insightful commentary in this space, so really you all created it. I was just the conduit.
Josh, my only issue with Gudjohnsen is that he hasn’t done the work to deserve a start in this match. And I think that, given that he struggles to retain possession against Liga midfielders, I wouldn’t want to see him trying to hang on to the ball against Man U’s mids/attackers. A fast break led by Ronaldo and Rooney would have our makeshift back line all aflutter, and not in a good way.
I think a front line of Messi/Henry/Krkic would be worth a look, because Henry at center would mean less running for him, but still give him great feeds and a legitimate threat in Messi, which would make him more dangerous. And Krkic doesn’t vanish when placed on the wing, unlike Eto’o, who I think would be an exceptional second-half hellraiser.
Now. Do you sit the reigning pichichi? Probably not, so we’re all just wanking with these lineups.

Just wanted to start a good debate there Kxev
ok actually i think it could work, its a gamble, yes. But Guddy knows more about English opposition that Eto’o, and like i said, we probably wont need pace up top. And however bad Guddy’s first touch is, it probably cant be as bad as Samuel Cement-Shoes Eto’o.
But like i said, i’m all about Messi-Henry-Bojan. I forgot to mention though, that constant position switching would be awesome, as i’m sure Messi, and prob Henry will have been man marked. And not only switch positions, but at any point have one of them slot in the middle, behind the the other two strikers.
And i know Pep likes Yaya-Pique, but NO, i dont want to see it. And its not even mainly about missing Yaya in the midfield, its that Yaya isnt fast enough to be our CB. But i would miss him in the Mid. No doubt that Yaya-Xavi-Iniesta are the best midfield in the world.
The backline i wouldnt get to picky about, as long as it has 4 defenders in it.
i just went with Caceres-Puyol-Pique-Sylvinho because i think weeknesses are being covered by the guy next to each player. Caceres is shaky, yes, but has Puyol who is rock solid next to him. Puyol who isnt the fastest, has Pique and Caceres surrounding him. And Sylvinho who isnt the Biggest, or Fastest, should have Pique to his right and Yaya a couple meters away.
Anyways. against my wishes, i’m sure we will see Yaya-Xavi-Iniesta, Messi-Eto’o-Henry. Which, i still woudlnt complain about because those are six world-class players.

How come nobody is mentioning Hleb. We all admit he has been a collective pile of shit this season but he could do a Henry and reinvent himself. What do you guys think bout hleb sell or keep?

Hleb is gone, he is poop, his moment to shine was two days ago against Mallorca, and he pooped a lot!!!!!!!!
Posted from

We’re selling Hleb. I just don’t see him staying, not because he doesn’t deserve a chance, but because the pressure this off season (particularly if we grab the treble) is going to be inSANE!

I really wanted to see him succeed here because he has plenty of talent and skills. Oh well.
Posted from

Me too, OhYes, though I lobbied fairly hard against him before he came and never truly gave him a chance throughout the year. He absolutely needs to start the remaining two league games, though.

Well if we sell him we need somebody who can replace xavi cuz xavi torres and guddy ain’t doing it for me. We lack squad depth especially in midfield look at how many options Man U have. we need to buy substitutes not world class midfielders who won’t survive warming the bench.

Guddy up top.. I mean, he has had two over 20 goal seasons in England.. so maybe if were down or level why not? but all things considered he hasn’t played striker at all this season so i wouldn’t gamble and start him up top. the sad thing about Guddy is that when in England he was great, in spain he’s been average. still like him anyway.
Eto’o should be played because he has scored over 20 goals this season and eventhough he’s been struggling he still has the knack to score goals or atleast i hope so… bojan might be too weak and inexperienced for ManU’s huge defenders. actually maybe eto’o is too and that would leave guddy as the one physical enough to compete..

Bojan delivered many of his better performances with Henry on the field, and Hleb’s best game has been when he supported Henry on the left against valencia. If you want the best chance of getting something out of hleb, play him alongside Henry.
@Alex, you’re probably right about the lineup…

Tutomate, SAF is a mystery even to United fans but I predict a new United version of ‘park the bus’, as opposed to the ‘08 semis or the recent Chelsea version.
The difference is Anderson and Berbatov will be deployed to hold up play. Then speed up the wings as usual.
Or maybe this is just idiotic rambling, who knows? Btw, good news on Iniesta and Henry. We really do respectfully want to face the best, no pressure here what with last year’s win and all.

Er the speed up the wings point was not addressed for Berbatov obviously. Hahaha ahat a ridiculous thought.
Qsn for all: how is Sylvinho’s current form? Pardon the ignorance.

miele, Sylvinho’s current form is solid. He lacks a bit of match fitness because he doesn’t play very often, but he’s reliable and doesn’t give up fouls.
In the newer post, I’ve posted the lineup that Guardiola has supposedly decided upon. No Sylvinho. Keita is at left back, with The Yaya at center back with Pique, and Puyol on the right wing.

I think that Guardiola will START with Henry-Eto’o-Messi, but if that doesn’t work out and Eto’o is clearly getting smothered by Vidic and Rio then maybe he’ll think about a change. Vidic has shown vulnerability to a pacy striker who charges at him directly, so maybe Messi can do that while the others keep, well, the others busy
There’s something all of you are missing here. And I feel this as a football player myself (albeit at university level). As a defender, your mistakes are ever so obvious, but as an attacker, you’re USUALLY allowed to make mistakes. A centre-half or goalkeeper makes ONE mistake, and the team pays. An attacker (especially in a team like Barcelona) doesn’t have that burden because the chances are guaranteed. Valdes and Abidal (and to an extent Puyol) are facing doubts over their ability because they made mistakes. But hello people, remember the mistakes Messi and Eto’o made? If Valdes hadn’t saved Alves’ own goal at the Bernabeu, the game would have CHANGED, FUNDAMENTALLY. But Messi had let off Real Madrid with a one-on-one vs Casillas around the same period (and it wasn’t a great save from Iker, Messi just blasted it straight to his body). Defenders are not allowed to make as many mistakes as attackers, and their great performances rarely catch the headlines as goalscorers do. Pique has been colossal but defensive greatness does not come from a few great tackles – it comes from great positioning and discipline. Unfortunately most coaches, players, and fans forget that – at least in my opinion. As a player I saw competing players picked for making successful diving tackles because of poor positioning and a lack of composure in keeping their man at bay – which drove home the point – a defender has to be spectacular to win praise, not just effective. Ever wondered why videos of defenders on youtube are made up of diving tackles more than anything else?
And Henry – he got picked on because he’s THIERRY HENRY. Easily one of the very best forwards in the whole world for a long long time, someone with an awesome reputation and record (even Messi was reportedly starstruck when he walked in) and the expectations from him were unbelievably high. He was disappointing, but ONLY in comparison to those expectations. Eto’o hasn’t had those great expectations I feel – because if he had those expectations, people wouldn’t be calling for his head last summer. They were, and he proved them wrong, and NOW he has expectations, and NOW he’s getting the 1 rating (which he fully deserves).
The defeat at Mallorca was at least partly a result of his EGO because he asked for the ball at every opportunity and then wasted it. In the second half, there were many opportunities where players like Bojan and Pedro were WIDE OPEN – but Eto’o, despite being marshalled by at least one or two all the time, was always given the pass – because he’s Eto’o. Which is a stupid reason. Stick to the Barca philosophy, pass and move, don’t just pass the ball forward blindly, idiots! It was sad to see no play down the wings and no use of space against Mallorca – Eto’o monopolized the attack and Mallorca were happier than happy because of it.
