Preview: Athletic – Barcelona, Sunday 1pm EST, GolTV

By: Isaiah | October 18th, 2008

Well, I’m back, so my previews are also back. Yay. Just remember, my record is 100% in terms of predictions,* so you can trust me to give you the real low down.

So we travel to Bilbao, where we’ll meet up with both Athletic and the historic Estadio San Mamés, known locally (and perhaps nationally) as La Catedral. It’s named after a saint, after all. Wikipedia being such a great tool to disseminate information, I learned today that Saint Mammes, as he is known in English, was thrown to the lions by the Romans, but instead of being devoured, Mammes befriended the lions and became BFF with one, who followed him around after that; now Athletic is known as Los Leones (the Lions). So that explains that, huh?

The stadium itself holds 40,000 fans — and with a 99% attendance rate, it really does — and I’m sure they’ll be making quite a bit of noise when the blaugrana make their appearance. But will it matter? After all, Athletic are a fairly small club compared to Barcelona. It would stand to reason that, without looking at anything regarding the season so far, that Barcelona should leave with a win. It’s just that in La Liga, nothing is that simple and certainly can’t be taken for granted.

Let’s look, then, at how Athletic stacks up to Barcelona via a handy little side-by-side comparison:

Note that Athletic’s home record mirrors Barça’s away record; Barça’s goal differential is only as large as it is because of the 6-1 drubbing they gave Gijon — without it they have a GD of 0.

They don’t have a leading scorer, really since all 4 of their goals have been scored by different players. Leo Messi alone has more goals than all of Athletic put together, as does Samuel Eto’o. They have also racked up a lot of yellow cards, so expect a physical game. If they don’t bring it physically, it’ll be a blowout.

Let’s turn to Barcelona now, a team on a 4-game winning streak. They’ll be lining up without Xavi, but with a few players returning from injury. Here’s the complete squad:

Valdés, Pinto, Alves, Víctor Sánchez, Puyol, Márquez, Piqué, Abidal, Sylvinho, Busquets, Touré Yaya, Keita, Iniesta, Bojan, Hleb, Henry, Eto’o, Messi.

So here’s my guess for starting 11: Valdés, Alves, Puyol, Márquez, Abidal, Busquets, Keita, Iniesta, Hleb, Eto’o, Henry

I know, I know, I’ve left both Touré and Messi out, but that’s because the former is coming off an injury and probably isn’t 100% and the latter got back to Barcelona late. Plus, squad rotation. Or something. Whatever. Don’t question my almost random alignment players! That’s what Guardiola seems to do, anyway. He’ll probably come out with a different defensive lineup, but it’s hard to ignore Henry’s contributions this week for France.

So, we’ll take them on and we’ll probably beat them if they decide to play with us rather than against us, if that makes any sense. However, I think we’ll probably end up with a draw because without Xavi, we’ll be a little lost in midfield. Official prediction: 1-1.

As always, here’s a list of Where to Watch. Remember, 1pm EST on GolTV here in the US.

Here’s the official starting lineup: Victor Valdés, Alves, Piqué, Márquez, Victor Sánchez, Iniesta, Touré, Keita, Hleb, Eto’o, Henry.

Whoa.

    Welcome back Isaiah!
No doubt it may turn to be a complicated game, but I think Iniesta can do the distribution role in the absence of Xavi, and with the shaky defense of Bilbao, I guess Barcelona can make it.
Nice preview, keep the good work.

1-1? a little pessimistic. I only wish that that pessimism was unfounded :-(

I still need to see Hleb in a couple of matches before im convinced. I think if Iniesta is not played out on the left like he ussually does out attack will suffer, but then again, if he doesnt play in the middle to try to fill in for Xavi, we’ll definetly be in trouble. I will stay opptimistic.

On another note, the Madrid derbi begins in 25 mins, and I hope Atletico can get the 3 points…

Hey, I know that someone laughed at Wenger’s comments that Theo Walcott could eventually equal or surpass Messi, but I just watched the Arsenal/Everton match.

He might be onto something. For those unfamiliar with Walcott, he’s (at this time) more willing to pass than Messi, I think. He’s definitely the fastest player in the Premiership, and probably the fastest player in the world.

Like Messi, he changed the match when he came on against Everton in the second half. Pretty crazy.

Yes, Messi is ours, and is the best player on the planet right now. But Walcott, if he develops properly, is going to be right up there as well. Too bad the odds of seeing him in Blaugrana are approximately less than zero.

The officiating will decide this game. If Bilbao are allowed to play as they wish: physical, with hard challenges, it will be tough to come out with a draw. If the offical doesn’t allow that kind of nonsense, we win, probably 3-1.

We know that Hleb still isn’t okay for 90 mintues, so I’m just not sure who subs in for him. Let’s hope we continue the early scoring thing, and put this one away with the quickness.

eklavya, I think your question is who scored?

    Final: 1-2 Real
    Van Nistelrooy after 30 seconds
    Simao in the 89th
    Higuain penalty in the 96th

Both Perea and van Nistelrooy were sent off.

The challenge (more like a mauling) on the penalty was unreal. It was basically on the last play of the match, with two men in front of Drenthe, so it wasn’t as if he was going anywhere.

I was rooting for both sides to lose, somehow.

Word, Ciaran. Have to admit, though. Hell of a goal by Van Nistelrooy. And “Old Horse Face” might be one of my favorite nicknames.

I also saw that Espanyol held Villarreal.

hey did anyone else what EE vs atletico on goltv? man those commentators are the biggest madridistas int he world. they just could fault madrid for anything. van nistelrooy deserved the red because it was a deliberate revenge tackle, and the commentators acted stunned. they really annoyed me. and that penalty? aaargh! atletico deserved a point. but villareal dropped three points so at least if we win tomorrow we can be within one point of first, although valencia can take first to put us in third.

what a frustrating day for football

Funny one, Larm. But Andrew is right. Hudson is particularly bad. I know that announcers are supposed to get excited when they call games, based in the notion that it gets viewers more geeked. Hell, the guys from Telemundo could read the phone book and it would sound thrilling.

But when Hudson was, last year during the EE’s clinching match, bellowing their war cry in a voice made hoarse from lobbing lavish linguistic love letters at any and all in a white shirt, it made me sick.

Yes, he goes ballistic when one of our lads does something great. We’ve all heard the screams and the Hudson-isms. But it is pretty blatant.

Meanwhile, dependent upon your favorite Spanish media poison, we are either convinced of Yaya and his qualities (EMD) or think he is surplus to requirements and Guardiola wants to see him gone (AS).

As you might imagine, the former publication is Barca-centric, while the latter is EE-centric. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, particularly given the initial clunkiness of the Busquets negotiations.

By the way, has anyone been paying attention to what’s happening in Serie A? Your top 3:

    1. Udinese
    2. Catania Calcio
    3. Napoli

Are you kidding? Juve is in 12th, Roma is in 14th. And while Inter can take the top spot if they beat Roma this afternoon, it’s still incredible that 7 games in there are 3 no-way-in-hell teams at the top of the table. Totally awesome.

Well, here’s your official lineup (added to the preview too):

Victor Valdés, Alves, Piqué, Márquez, Victor Sánchez, Iniesta, Touré, Keita, Hleb, Eto’o, Henry.

Check it out: no Puyol, plus Toure, plus Victor Sanchez. Holy hell.
