Preview: Barça – Numancia; Saturday 4pmEST, GolTV
By: Isaiah | January 23rd, 2009
Venganza. That’s the word for this match. Revenge, vengeance, getting even, retribution, or whatever else you want to call it (thanks, Thesaurus.com!), that’s what we’re after in this one. The only team in league play — indeed the only Spanish team at all — to beat us this year is, of all teams, Numancia. If you are new to both this blog and the Spanish league in general, you may be shocked to learn this fact. I’m somewhat shocked to state it, for two reasons: 1) We lost to Numancia? and 2) No one else beat us?
As incredible as the first part is, the second part is even more stunning. And I have the oddest feeling that, after tomorrow’s game, Numancia will still be the only team to beat FCB once. Sorry, rojillos, but this is the end of the line for your winning streak against Barcelona.
Naturally I’m biased, since this is a Barcelona blog, after all, but just on the surface, without details, how Numancia got one game off of us is beyond me. If they somehow manage to win two games against us this year, I’ll post about how great they are, about how cool Soria, Spain is. Why am I so cocky today? Hmm…
Ooh boy, time for statistics! My favorites!
Overall:
Barça: 16W-2D-1L, 59GF 13GA; 2.63pts per game
Numancia: 6W-2D-11L 23GF 37GA; 1.05pts per game
Barça home: 8W-2D-0L, 36GF 6GA; 2.60pts per home game
Numancia away: 1W-0D-9L, 8GF 25GA; 0.30pts per away game
So, if you look at that, without any background information, without squad lists, and without very much knowledge about the game that is soccer (guilty on all but the first account, am I), you’d be hard pressed to find a reason, even if you’re a die hard perico or a madridista, to have the slightest optimism that Numancia can come away with a point. Especially if you consider that Barcelona’s A-Team (there you go, Hector, that’s all you get) was rested in midweek, for the most part. Bringing Yaya, Henry, Eto’o, and Pique all off a week’s rest can’t sound good to Numancia.
But do you despair that I don’t give you enough statistics to mull over? Have no fear, the official site is here! Yay statistics! I still say the thing about assists is stupid, though, so ignore that part.
You know what’s also really cool? Stats about Bojan Krkic. Why? Because they debunk your silly notions, that’s why. Last year Bojan was the startlet of startlets, scoring 10 goals in the league and even notching one in the Champions League, of all places. This year, his goal return is paltry. It is despicably small and he should be loaned out to learn how to score.
Last year: 47 appearances overall; 14 league starts, 17 league sub appearances; 3 Champions League starts, 6 CL sub appearances; 2 Copa starts, 5 sub appearances. Goals: 12, 10 league, 1 CL, 1 Copa.
This year: 23 appearances overall; 1 league start, 11 league sub appearances; 3 Champions league starts, 3 CL sub appearances; 5 Copa starts. Goals: 5, 0 league, 3 CL, 2 Copa.
His 07/08 goals per appearance is 0.255 and his 08/09 goals per appearance is 0.217.* I know that’s a couple of hundredths off, but, to put this in the right perspective, if he had scored 1 more goal in any of his appearances, he’d have a higher goals per appearance rate this year than last year. Yet the kid is getting stick from everywhere for not grabbing goals. Sorry, but that’s not fair. He’s started 1/14th as many games in the league and his subs into the games have generally come in the last few minutes rather than early in the second half. He’s score 3 goals in the Champions League, where he’s made – gasp – 3 starts. So lay off the kid, he’s doing well, especially for someone who gets few starts (he has played 57 minutes as a starter in the league and he averages 20minutes 5 seconds per sub appearance).
Sorry to get sidetracked like that, I meant to post that yesterday as a stand-alone, but I got sidetracked so now you can think about that while you consider potential lineups.
Here is Numancia’s squad list: Juan Pablo, Diego, Juanra, Felipe, Pavón, Sergio Ortega, Boris, Palacios, Bellvis, Juan Carlos Moreno, Nagore, Dimas, Del Pino, Quero, Barkero, Brit, Goiria, Aranda.
Naturally, Guardiola hasn’t given us his squad list, which I’m beginning to really dislike. There should be a league-wide rule about when you release squad lineups and it should be 24-48 hours before the match kicks off. That way, jerks like me can get their lineups set and not look like bigger jerks than they really are. Grr.
So no starting lineup guess form me today, just the official prediction: 3-0. Goals by Eto’o (who screams ridiculously and ends up hugging Guardiola), Messi, and Xavi. I’m going to stop betting on Hleb to score until he starts shooting. Which will be never.
And here is your list of places to watch the game: Where to Watch FC Barcelona. I should be able to update it later today with some San Diego information, so look for that if you’re in the area (thanks, Jason).
—–
*I know I should do this as a function of minutes played rather than appearances, but I don’t have last year’s minutes figures to work with. His current rate is a goal every 209minutes 36 seconds. That is, by my rough calculation, a better goals-per-minute average than everyone except for Henry, Messi, and Eto’o. If you can find someone who has a better one that isn’t one of those three, let me know. I’ll give you a sticker.

Thanks for the Bojan stats Isaiah! Totally brings some positive vibes to the subject of little Bojan’s scoring record this year
Can’t wait for the game!

in my limited understand you can “bump” some one esles’s comment that you agree with or think is important etc. this works mainly on sites like reddit or digg where a “bump” makes the article appear higher up the news list because they are listed by amounts of “bumps” they have. or for exaple, where someone wrote a good article on the previous post but then the preivew came up and so no one would see the really great article so someone may “bump” it up onto the priveiew page so more people can see it. i guess somepeopel just use it as a way of agreeing with somweonne?
feel free to correct me, this is just my understanding

“bump” is usually used on forums where the threads are listed by the most recent comment. so if a thread starts to disappear from the first few pages, someone can “bump” the thread back to the top by replying to it.
doesn’t really apply here since the blog is ordered by the posts, not comment thread.

I want to destroy numancia.
My starting 11;
Valdez
Alves,Pique,Puyol,Abidal
Xavi-Busi-Iniesta
Messi-Eto’o-Henryokay, okay, i have some explaining to do. So here it goes: I put pique instead of Rafa, because, well, Rafa is injured, and i suppose a healthy Pique is slightly more effective than an injured Marquez. Oh, and no Yaya? well, Yaya has one job, and that is to destroy any and all attacks. But if we learn from out mistakes, lets look at our only loss of the season: Yaya was not being utilized at all. they never had the ball, so he had nothing to do. Those 3 minutes of game time that they did have the ball, they spent flying down the flanks and crossing it, avoiding the middle at all costs. Hence my argument for Busquets as out starting DM, because he will add more fluidity to our game, play of Xavi and Iniesta very well, and the defensive ability should be good enough to deal with what little Numancia offer.
For all of those RPG kids out there, switching Yaya for Busi will have an effect of; -5 DEFence, +1 ATTack, +1Passing, +1 Movement, + 2 Speed.
If everyone can agree that certain players have certain qualities that will help us in certain games, than i think you can at least entertain my idea.
my second argument for this is that Henry gets to play this game with (drumroll… ) some assistance! He will not be stranded on the left, He’ll have Iniesta to play off of. so maybe im suggesting more of a:
———–VV————
Alves-Pique-Puyol-Abildal
———-Busi———–
—Xavi——–Iniesta—
Messi—-Eto’o—-Henry–And… if they really pack the Bus tightly,i think Pep would not Hesitate in deploying some version of the 4-2-4, and in the if all else fails a 3-1-2-4;
___________VV_____________
__Pique___Puyol__Abidal__
___________Busi___________
Alves________Xavi_________
_Messi__Eto’o_Henry_Iniestaread ‘um and weep numancia! OK… too many diagrams… but yeah… im a man that knows what i want, and thats what i want!
and in the worst case scenerio, Numancia peek in their shorts and find a pair, we can always put in Yaya from the bench, and take of Busi for the added defensive cover, but if they actually do try to attac us, theres no way they leave without at least 4 goals conceded.
phew… fingers tired…

My only reason why Yaya should start over Busi: Yaya.
I like the rest, though.
Also, did you roll any 12-sided die when considering your +s and -s ? Cause you should have. Oh nos an orc horde just attacked your Half Wizard-Half Elf and you have no mana left.

I personally dont play RPG, i have some friends that dabble, and i make sure to ridecule them for it. But the terms are very widely understood, thank God, i thought since the crowd here, is mostly older than I, the reference would be lost.
Im still sticking with Busi over Yaya though, if it were a C.L. match vs a Prem side, Yaya all the way, but its little Numancia. But lets face it Isaiah, Its Pep were talking about, none of us will get what we want out of the starting line up, and as soon as we get the 3, after the 90, we’ll be happy that we didnt get it right

I like your reasoning Jason but I agree w/ Isaiah… Yaya FTW!

my thoughts while reading your preview, I can’t believe how far we’ve come from the lackluster exhibitions in Chicago&NYC and that dreadful start @ Numancia.

…anyone know any East Bay (Berkeley/Oakland CA) locations showing the game? I will be free of my GolTV-less rural digs this weekend.
…theres got to be a taqueria somewhere with La Liga amidst the wash of covercharge hungry EPL pubs.Posted from

“Half Wizard-Half Elf” …Messi in otherwords?

I definitely think some SPF 45 in midfield would add some fluidity against a side that will most likely park the bus.
However, I’ve learned my lesson. Its useless to try to get into Pep’s head. I’m not even gonna try. Has any of us correctly guessed a single line-up? The guy plays his mind games in other ways than talking trash a la Sir Alex and the Special One (…and Benitex, and Wenger, does one big EPL coach NOT talk trash?). Hell, we might see Pedrito for Yaya for all we know. Its useless.

Give me the Krkic stats you want, but he’s had the suck this season. Yes, he has a bright future, we will all admit. But his numbers are just one instance in which statistics belie reality.
Now. Having said that, I want destruction. I want Blaugrana feet knee deep in some Numancia ass. But, given that Numancia is going to link arms in the box, shouting “None shall pass” every time we get within the 18-yard box, I just don’t see the satisfying destruction taking place.
Which is unfortunate.
As for Eto’o, and his passion and aggression making him what he is on the pitch, nobody would be saying that if he didn’t have the goal stats that he has. I’m just not a fan of his attitude. Never have, never will.
I’ll go everyone one further. If Henry had the goal stats that Eto’o did and was causing trouble on the practice pitch, people would be calling Air France for Guardiola, wanting our Frenchman run out of town.
And speaking of Frenchmen, I’m rocking the long-sleeve home shirt with Giuly on the back as I type this.

I’m also not that big a fan of Eto’s attitude sometimes but I must admit I have a bit of a soft spot for partially insane mercurial strikers with a penchant for crazy yellow cards and wild celebrations. I think you might be getting a little ahead of yourself because of a single incident Kevin that was typically overblown by the Madrid media trying to find ANY chink in BArca’s armor.
Gotta give credit where its due, we could do a lot worse than Samu. He was on the block last summer, the fans wanted him out, Pep wanted him out, and he was well within his rights to cry, mope, demand a trade or pull a Robinho. Instead the guy just worked harder and got back to his best goal scoring form. That takes serious guts. Tell me an Adebayor, Drogba, Ibrahimovic, or even Benzema wouldn’t have just pulled the plug and moped until they were traded. Deco and Ronny did. Samu buckled up and made himself better. More impressively, he apparently didn’t hold it against the fans for booing him last season. The guy is a “cojonudo” if there ever was one despite all of his failings. He’s arguably the most passionate player on the team alongside Captain Tarzan. As long as all of that passion is used the right way, he’s good for the team. I wouldn’t want him holding the same blood grudge he holds against Madrid for ditching him against us. I don’t know if anybody remembers his Mallorca days but he was probably the most impressive Madrid killer in a small team I’ve ever seen.

wow, kxevin, you dont want us to win against Numanica, you want us to kill them, and then humiliate them infront of our fans. I enjoy such Barca passion coming form someone other than myself. (although i do try to contain myself on this blog)
but i do think your being hard on little Samu. I say we enjoy him while he is here, and when he leaves, whether true his whishes or ours, that will be that. If he is causing trouble, then im sure Guardiola would go purchase him a one way ticket to Cameroon, but it seems that nothing really happened, so im happy with that.
Anyways… i want bloodshed tomorrow (today!)!!!

Eto’o has always been this volatile mercurial character and this supposed “bust up” does not surprise me in the least..it is just a meeting of two very strong intense personalities

am i right to be worried about the espanyol game? I mean all they have to do is get a score draw and they go through. We, on the other hand, have to win to go through (or keep the score 0-0 and win on penalties). I say fuck revenge, rest messi, henry, xavi, toure, puyol, marquez. The copa match is more important than this one.

Statistics is one thing. But Bojan just has not looked his old self under Guardiola. He misses so many chances .. destruts the passing pattern …
the only good thing about him is the way he runs flailing those arms

The list:
Valdés, Pinto, Jorquera,
Alves, Puyol, Piqué, Cáceres, Abidal, Sylvinho,
Xavi, Touré, Busquets, Gudjohsen,
Messi, Eto’o, Bojan, Henry, Iniesta, Hleb
Missing people:
keita, marquezPosted from

That’s the quandary, Nothing, which is why I think that despite what Guardiola said in the aftermath of the 1st leg about being satisfied, he wanted a couple of away goals so that the side could roll into the home leg with a nice lead and play keepaway for 90 minutes. Hence the insertion of Messi and Xavi, but the way things were looking, it was like jamming two diamonds into a puddle of mucilage. Alves would have been the real difference maker, along with Messi, who needs a real threat to provide space for his runs.
But as it is now, the decision becomes who to play on short rest? Xavi and Messi didn’t really play enough of the match to get all that fatigued. You’ll probably see Iniesta as a sub today. But if we field a “knee deep” starting XI against Numancia, what do we do for the Wednesday home leg?
The hope is that we destroy Numancia early, then rest the lads, right? But that isn’t likely to happen unless there is an uncharacteristic early lapse from that side. So we play a full match today, then right back at it on Wednesday.
Personally, I would play Henry today and Eto’o against Espanyol, or the reverse. Each can take a whole match duration, and you have the big gun (presuming Guardiola is really about taking the Copa).
So, v. Numancia: Valdes, Alves, Pique, Puyol, Abidal, Yaya, Gudjohnsen (with the short hook ready), Xavi, Messi, Krkic, Eto’o.
v. Espanyol: Pinto, Alves, Pique, Caceres, Sylvinho, Keita, Hleb (central midfield, not wing), Busquets, Iniesta, Krkic, Henry.
A couple of the defenders can get double duty because neither team figures on giving them a lot to do.
That said, it’s one reason I wouldn’t mind dumping the Copa. It’s a nice chance for silver, but it’s NIT-level stuff compared to Liga and Champions League, and the matches always seem to place themselves at inconvenient times.
–Hector, note that the Eto’o reports came from EMD, which is very Barca-friendly. I’m sure that Guardiola put the smack down and everything is “fine” now. But when a side is playing as we are and everything is beautiful, or even if it isn’t, you do what the coach says and shut up, or find the door, in my opinion.
–Marquez is out for two weeks, and Keita is also out against Numancia, due to a bruised knee.

Yeah, I know it came from EMD who promptly subtracted importance from it (as should be expected of the,), the Madrid media then just ran with it. Guardiola seems like a big boy though, I think he can handle it and take whatever action is necessary.
