Preview: Barcelona - Racing Santander: Saturday 2pmEST

La Liga returns with a serious test for Barça in week 2. It may sound over-dramatic to say that second match of a season is make-or-break, but the truth is that the match will be viewed through the lens of the both the last 2 “failed” seasons as well as the brilliant preseason. The media is mad at both Laporta and their own lack of creativity in coming up with new ways of discussing the team, so they latch on to the negative, running with it as far as they can.

If Barça loses or draws this match, the season will be considered a disaster before it has really started, no matter what Real Madrid does against Numancia. If Barça wins — and especially if the win is huge, stylish — the expectations for the next match will sky high once more. That the next match is in the Champions League should be lost on no one as they read match reviews on Sunday.

But the rollercoaster ride that is being a fan of Barcelona in this age of over-exhuberance from Sport and El Mundo Deportivo should also not be lost on anyone. EMD has its own anti-Laporta agenda that has little or nothing to do with the actual games, while Sport is more interested in National Enquirer-esque sensationalism than substance. Either way, the whole point is lost: ball on field, men chasing it.

What of these men, though? Everyone is back from international duty and no one seems to be hurt, which is fantastic news. Messi comes back with Maradona’s words (”selfish”) ringing in his ears, but is otherwise fine, unless the jetlag gets to him. I somehow don’t see that as really happening, but with the Champions League match against Sporting CP coming up on Tuesday, we might just see Messi on the bench for most of the game.

It’s technically 3 losses in a row for the first team, though the 1-3 defeat at the hands of Sant Andreu was in the Copa Catalunya with a squad consisting entirely of B-teamers. But looking at the last 4 games, we’ve got 1 official win and 3 losses, a fact that needs to change in the Camp Nou. Still, after all that, it does feel like this is the first match of the season, as if it it’s a fresh start for everyone.

Hot of the presses, here’s your squad list: Valdés, Pinto, Puyol, Alves, Piqué, Abidal, Sylvinho, Touré, Busquets, Keita, Gudjohnsen, Xavi, Iniesta, Pedro, Víctor Sánchez, Henry, Bojan, Hleb, Eto’o, Messi.

20 players, including Busquets because Marquez and Caceres are out (Marquez just got back from Mexico’s WC Qualifiers, where he scored, and Caceres is still not back because of flight delays and cancellations after his Uruguay WC Qualifiers)

Here’s my starting lineup: Valdés, Alves, Piqué, Puyol, Abidal, Touré, Iniesta, Xavi, Messi, Henry, Eto’o.

A typical lineup, really, but do you expect Guardiola to mix it up that much? If he does mix it up, I think he’ll throw Keita on for Iniesta, though I don’t see this happening because he’ll want to reserve his ability to get more defenders on the field if possible. Messi may be tired, so he’ll probably get subbed out in favor of Bojan or Hleb somewhere around the hour mark. I think, though, that he’ll do some serious damage before that happens. The Camp Nou just seems to inspire the boys…

As for Racing, they’re bringing in a draw at home to Sevilla that could have been a 2-1 victory if it weren’t for a penalty miss by a certain Ezequiel Garay. Remember him? He might have been ours, but for a few pennies worth of difference, it now appears, but will he come back to haunt us? I think not, as we’ll effectively close him down with massive attacking football. The 1-1 draw at home was a bad way to start of the season for Racing and it’s not going to get any better with a trip to Barcelona followed by a visit from Madrid and then a trip to Villarreal. Harsh, really, especially with the UEFA Cup shoved in between us and the Evil Empire.

Mohammed Tchité is a decent striker, but he doesn’t bring that much class to field (8 goals in over 30 games); other than Tchité, they don’t have anyone of great talent up front, or at best they have unproven talent like Jonathan Pereira. Their defense is their strong suit, that’s for sure, but I don’t think they’ll be able to aim for the counterattack game in the Camp Nou where no one is roaring them on, a la Numancia.

I see this game as one of revenge, as one where the boys will be forced to care even if they don’t really (which would be very troubling, of course). Official prediction: 3-1 goals by Messi (2), Eto’o, and Tchité (on a counter towards the end). I think that Henry will set up two of the goals by finally finding himself some space on the left side, though Bojan’s introduction in place of the Frenchman will created the third.

Don’t get me wrong, Racing is a good team (having finished 6th last season), but they’re walking into what should be a pretty serious effort from the boys in blaugrana. Alves is no doubt out to prove himself after having been discarded by Dunga as surplus to requirements (as the CBF should with Dunga, to be honest) and I expect him to make some crazy runs up and down, creating problems alongside Messi.

I prefer if they play the corners short…just stop crossing…
    Still no shots…

i think the worst part of the game was ray hudson calling dani alves “danny boy.”

being fools made fools of us tonight. we may as well have taken that first 45 minutes and thrown it out the goddamn window. i’ll repeat: 80% possession, 1 shot on goal. what a waste of time.

we didn’t start to look threatening until Messi came on, but we sacrificed virtually our entire midfield for an attack. Abidal was horrible, Busquets was nonexistent and Eto’o even less than nonexistent. then we wait until an hour-80 minutes to bring on our actual threatening players, in Messi and Bojan, and we can’t catch up.

what a clusterfuck of a game.

I was very impressed by the performances of Pique and Busquets. Other than that it was pretty average.
We need something a little different.
Xavi, Iniesta, Hleb, Messi, Pedro, Bojan, Henry and Eto’o are all just minor changes from each other.
We need someone with a bit less finesse and a bit more muscle. Give me Benzema, Adebayor, Berbatov, Gomez or Huntelaar on the bench to change things up. Heck I’d en take Nikola Zigic!!!

    40 shots, one goal.

    that says it all.

    wow…

but at least that means we have potential–capitalizing on it is our problem…we’ll get better but we can’t pretend this isnt frustrating

Ciaran plan be now is to stick to plan A:)
I would like to c henry in eto place in such kind of games, his move in the box may create lot of space.

Y the hell aren’t they shooting the ball? I dont know if I am wrong but playing against 10 men behind a ball, with no high in the box to head the crosses, u either penetrate with dribbling to get fouls or u shoot from outside, no shots taken… till they rain the teams with shots from outside to force the 10 players to open up to block the shots, I cannt c any improvement.
Crossing the ball that usually considered as a bless was a curse today, the team were losing the ball the moment they cross it, even from a corner.

I still don’t understand the primary selection, I already said before that young players need time to mature, so I am not commenting after a bad game but as a principle. At least he could have used bojan in pedro place from the beginning…

Some of the Racing fouls were brutal, the foul called on Puyol for the free kick that led to the goal was crap. He went up, won that ball fairly, shouldn’t have been a foul.

Pique was very impressive, and it was “neat” seeing a 3-2-5 formation I guess? But not when it results in a tie.

To give them some credit their keeper did stand on his head a couple of times. So very very disappointing.

Our disposition seems like it will never be able to score…the other team just put 4 defenders and foul everytime and its all ok for them, even a equal is good enough for them…!!!Wish we would shoot from far a bit more…

the bad officiating really is no excuse, though, as much as i would like to blame it on bad calls. we had double digits in statistics and ONE GOAL, man. ONE. not good enough for a team like barca. just not.

i wish it had been henry in eto’o’s place today. maybe that, combined with messi & bojan in earlier, would have made the difference.

Is it not the norm to start with your strong team, win the game and then rest them?
Why not play Messi, Bojan and Eto’o from the start and then take them off to rest them for Tuesday as soon as the match is over.

The substitutions were a lil wierd to me, removing Puyol is like commiting suicide…noticed how vulnerable we looked after Puyol left. I was a lil scared when Keita was removed too…..
I guess we were just unlucky today, their goalie made some amazing saves…

we were razor close. needs some polish, but still exciting football to watch. you didnt notice etos cos he was surrounded by defenders the whole game.

i think we just need una goleada to break the ice and then it will be fine. really nervy. two b-teamers.

hleb what, a sprained ankle? ligaments?

one thing I was thinking while Racing players were getting booked left, right and center is that how much the schedule is favoring the Real Madrid team…its the beginning of the season so the cards have not yet accumulated..but fast forward a couple of weeks people getting yellow carded against us would be off against the EE…we’ll be helping them in one more way!!

yeah, mat, that was a good point.

overall from this game, i dont think we can put blame in any one particular place. better substitution, better officiating, and more luck are the keys here. :) better luck next time, i guess.

all i want are some goals, man. is that so much to ask?

Let’s not get hung up on conspiracies. It won’t matter who is suspened against the EE if we do the job. The fact is we didn’t and didn’t look like it. Technique good - ability to weight a telling pass nil.
