Preview: Eto’o vs Depor; Saturday 3pm GolTV
By: Isaiah | May 30th, 2009
So here it is, your final preview of the 2008/09 season. And no, it won’t be gloriously long and stats-laden. Instead, it’ll be about Samuel Eto’o. He is on the war path, as we saw on Wednesday and his sights are set securely on Diego Martín Forlán Corazo. You may have heard of him. Depor sure has and they’re probably really pissed at him because Eto’o might be able to convince Guardiola to give him a solid supporting cast rather than a disjointed B team to try and win both the pichichi for Eto’o personally and break the record for most goals scored in a season (107, Barça has 104).
We know that Messi, Alves, and Milito are the only first teamers not traveling to A Coruña, though it’s unclear who will be chosen for the first team, even just 5 hours before the game. It seems unlikely that we’ll have many regular first teamers out there because of both their most recent game (which you may have heard something about) as well as their vicious hangovers from partying until the wee hours of the night for like 8 straight nights or however long it’s been now.
But Eto’o will be out there, trying to prove a point (and hoping for a bit of help from Almeria’s defense to keep Forlan from scoring more) that he should be pichichi and be the one to get our 108th goal, to make this season, which is already magical enough, just that much more magical.
So let’s do that. Let’s get him the pichichi against a team that is playing for European play. If they win, Depor is in the Europa Cup/whatever the crap it’s called. So they’ll be going all out and we’ll have to take them apart for that. I think we can do it, but it depends what kind of a game we play. I assume we’ll see a mostly B team out there with the following lineup:
Oier/Pinto, Caceres, Botia, Pique, Abidal, Xavi Torres, Guddy, Hleb, Bojan, Eto’o, Pedro!
If we’re going all out for this pichichi/goals record, we’ll start the following:
Oier/Pinto, Caceres, Puyol, Pique, Abidal, The Yaya, Keita, Hleb, Bojan, Eto’o, Pedro!
Yeah, that’s right, I’ve got Hleb out there no matter what, as well as Pique. Without Muniesa (suspended) and Marquez (injured), we’re going to have to start at least one regular CB unless we want to start a back line of VicSan, Caceres, Botia, Abidal (or unless Abidal plays CB, in which case I don’t even know what the hell to do since Sylvinho shouldn’t have to play after taking part in the CL final and being 56 years old).
Anyway, Official Prediction: 0-4 Barcelona wins going away, gets the goal record, Eto’o scores a hat trick for the Pichichi, Pedro! gets a goal, and we all go home happy. Except Hleb, who disappears for long stretches.

lovelymofo – It’s true, I’ve had a mancrush on Rafa for years. I would hate to see him leave because of his value as a player however, his experience was vital for our defense this year, and as frustrating as his constant injuries and moments of insanity are, we need defense depth anyway. He probably will leave when his contract expires in 2010, though I wouldn’t mind him finishing his career here if he can accept being a role player.

I say the team stops trying to have Eto’o score. Clearly it isn’t working. Let’s have Bojan end with a goal or two.

Marquez is:
1- not skilled enough to play in Barcelona’s midfield.
2- not tough enough to play in Barcelona’s defense.but ladies like him

“not tough enough to play in Barcelona’s defense”
What? Rafa is probably our filthiest defender

puyol milito caceres abidal pique toure …
marquez thinks he is the most classy defender in history and that makes him loose concentration at times.
Remember Valeds’ double save against Drogba? Marquez trying to show his class.

I think Rafa has proven to have been a valuable player in the seasons where Barça has won the Champion’s League. I’m not saying he should be a starter in every match next season, but he definitely deserves to be here next year and I hope he finishes his career here too.

even I don’t like Rafa (my girldfriend likes him a lot), in pep we trust. If pep puts him on the field it’s because of something. Let’s see next year.

mku, might not agree with you all the time, but I do in terms of Iniesta. He is AWESOME.

Toure is no central defender, he did an admirable job when needed but he’s a much better midfielder.
Like Valdes, everyone remembers Rafa’s epic blunders but he played brilliantly for about 80% of the season, he was a major contributor this year.

I forgot to add that Pique and Marquez was probably our best defensive partnership this season, for whatever reason Puyol looked a lot better on the side and I would actually like to see him play leftback more next year.

Iniesta might not make it.
He wasn’t fully healed, being the legend that he is he played the second half of the CL final injured and was still possibly the best man out there.Posted from

mku hating on Marquez as well? Geez!
I hate him in the Mexican National Team but only because he never performs like he does at Barcelona.
You’re crazy if you don’t think he’s tough enough to defend for the team. And his long passes out of the back were the best. Earlier in the season Pique couldn’t touch him. He was doing so well until his injury, and then the other injury that kept him out of the final.
Reads the game very well, tackles very well, has good pace and strength, etc.
Definitely want him back next season.

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who thought he was the best defender for part of the season, I know I’m biased but for years I’ve been saying that when Marquez performs everyone around him looks better, I think that was definitely the case this year even though Pique overall had the best season of anyone in our defense.

He’s only 30 anyway. He has at least 2 years left at the top flight.

I know I posted this before but I think Kxevin missed it……..
Kxevin: I read your comment in the last post that the t-shirts the team was wearing during the parade are available for sale on the site, but I cannot find them. Would you mind linking to the exact page for me? Thanks in advance.
