Preview: Valencia – Barcelona, Saturday 4pmEST, GolTV

By: Isaiah | April 24th, 2009

This is going to be brief and to the point: Valencia, you’re next. Okay, not that short. It’s not like Valencia isn’t a good team whose players are currently being given monetary compensation for their time on the field or anything. That couldn’t happen in the Spanish Primera.

Hmm.

Valencia is, actually, a very good team on quite a roll (5 wins in a row). They’re 4th in the league, below nose-diving Sevilla by 2 points. However, they haven’t played a team quite like the Blaugrana since, uh, since the last time they played us. And that didn’t end so hot for them. Hopefully there is a repeat performance.

And this time we’ll have Messi back, so the attacking impetus isn’t entirely on Iniesta anymore. Maybe that’s not so great, seeing as Iniesta is playing so well, but adding Messi can’t possibly be detrimental to a team, right? That’s my thinking, anyway. So, we increase our attacking capabilities as well as our ball-retention by replacing Keita with Messi and moving Iniesta to the left again. Even if Iniesta is better on the right than on the left, I think Messi is even better on the right (who would have guess 4 months ago we’d be having that conversation?) than anyone else.

Here’s our squad list: Valdés, Jorquera, Alves, Abidal, Puyol, Márquez, Piqué, Xavi, Iniesta, Keita, Gudjohnsen, Touré, Busquets, Henry, Etòo, Messi, Hleb, Bojan

And from that, my lineup: Valdés, Alves, Puyol, Piqué, Abidal, The Yaya, Xavi, Iniesta, Henry, Eto’o, Messi.

I recognize that this is our “strongest” lineup and that we need this lineup against Chelsea and then RM, but, well, this is our chance to win the league. Right here, right now. So let’s do it. Sure, okay, yeah, putting Keita out there is a good idea too, but for Iniesta? Maybe. Xavi still seems instrumental, but so does everyone else. I don’t know where that leaves us, but that’s my lineup and I’m going with it.

Valencia, of course, are a serious team with serious players. Villa and Silva are the names that jump out at me, naturally, so let’s consider them the Danger Men. Feel free to throw Mata in there, too, if you’d like. They’re missing Joaquin, Albelda, and Fernandes, so that weakens them in their midfield, where they will be most vulnerable. Cut off the supply (by controlling the ball itself) and Villa and Silva will get frustrated. Sure, they’re probably more clinical than Jesus Navas (how did he miss that!?), but if we can keep them from getting those chances (Puyol in the middle will marshal Pique better than Marquez, I think, though you can come up with plenty of evidence to the contrary).

So, this mini preview is over. Official Prediction: 3-1, Barça, goals by Messi (2) and Eto’o. Villa will nab one as well to keep up the image of wannabe Pichichi.

    Goal.com is really shameful…

hope the real Messi will contribute to Isaiah’s prediction coming true!

If Messi scores twice, maybe he can beat CR7s record of last season :) But he’s better anyway.

    Isaiah, you are a Guardiola!

I hope we rest Yaya for Busquets (he will have a big tack on Tuesday), and either Iniesta(I favor that) or Xavi. And Playing Marquez for Pique will be good as well. Save the guy batteries for Drogba.

Its still a competent selection this way in my opinion.

Fernandes is Valencia biggest loss in my opinion. Joaquin has decent replacements and Albelda (current Albelda) is the weak link in Valencia.

But respect due for that team, it hasnt been an easy season, and still they are competing on the CL places. They were one of the teams I nominated as major rivals for the liga this season if you remember. It didn’t happen. Yet I think we can win this game, their defense isn’t solid enough to handle our firework.

    My XI:
Valdes, Puyol, Marquez, Pique, Abidal, Xavi, Busquets, Keita, Messi, Eto’o & Iniesta

Dani will get booked if he plays and he is necessary for EE. A backline of Puyol, Rafa, Pique & Abidal are good enough to keep Silva, Mata & Villa relatively quiet.

In midfield Yaya is too important for the classico to risk a booking for the referee making a bad decision on him breaking up a play. Xavi is definitely capable of avoiding a booking.
The physicality of Busquets & Keita, coupled with the ball retention of Xavi, Iniesta & Messi should run rings around the likes of Marchena & Baraja.

Silva can be a danger and Mata & Villa are instinctive players capable of getting on the scoresheet in any match. Their problem is how deep they will have to come to get possession and what they can do that far from goal.
Valdes will have to be quick off his line because at every chance Valencia will try through balls to Villa.

My prediction: 2-0 with goals from Keita & Messi

    Forgot to mention…
Pepe received a 10 match ban so will miss the final 6 matches this season and 4 from next but Higuain had his yellow for diving rescinded so does not serve a suspension.
If Higuain gets booked in the match with Sevilla on Sunday evening then he misses the classico

favorite goalkeeper is kind of pushing it, i think. definitely henry’s favorite team to score (6 goals since he arrived last year). i think Villa only had one in that time, in the unfortunate 3-2 win over our boys.

anyway should be a good match.

With Albiol & Albelda, I’m more afraid for Messi & Iniesta’s safety than I am for losing points. So yes, I agree, we should rest Iniesta

When Henry scored the hat trick, he was playing as the center forward instead of Eto’o. I doubt the same will happen tomorrow (at least not a bunch of goals, the usual maybe one from Henry and a bunch from everyone else ;)

BTW, what the hell is it with goal.com and their silly, silly, corny-ass puns? I don’t think they do it as an ironic joke, I think they believe they are geniuses for coming up with this stuff. The only good thing about that site is their domain name.

I think barcelona will rest alot of the key players.

    My Line-up

    Valdes

    Alves – Pique – Marquez – Abidal-

    Busquets
    Keita Gudjohnsen

    Messi Bojan Iniesta

Almost agree with you Joel. But i think we need to change few more. I don’t think that Guddy is good enough to replace Xavi in the middle. Hleb is a better option. My line up will be:

    Valdes
    Puyol – Pique – Marquez – Abidal
    Xavi – Busquets – Keita
    Messi – Bojan – Iniesta

We have to sacrifice Xavi for this game. Although one more yellow card for him can cause us disaster during El Clasico. Puyol have to take Alves place just I know that he gonna get his next yellow card in this game if Pep alllows him to play. Same like The Yaya. Come guys.. All Barca fans around the world, lets hope this one will be starting point for us to distance ourselves from the EE.
