Squad Rotations: Are We Thinking Clearly?
By: Isaiah | October 20th, 2008
Recently there was a spate of comments asking for Bojan’s inclusion in the rotation system that is going on at Barça. Is this a well-founded argument, or is there a level of bias going on? I’ve asked for player inclusion before, so I’m certainly not exempt, and I too would like to see More Bojan.
Let’s take it one step at a time, though. These are early days in the league and if you’re Guardiola, you’re still getting to know your squad, especially the new players. It’s easy to say “play this guy, he’s good,” but in a squad like Barça’s, there are lots of those players. In the case of Bojan, he’s an 18-year old who last year played in 31 league games and 9 Champions League games (that’s 40 total games). Of those, he started 17 of them and subbed on the remainder (23). Perhaps Guardiola is holding off on using Bojan because he doesn’t want to wear the lad out; it was Bojan, after all, who peremptorily turned down a spot on the Spanish Euro2008 team because of exhaustion. Maybe they’ve worked out an arrangement where Bojan will play more and more throughout the coming months, especially after January.
Next, let’s go to the actual statistics.
Barcelona has had 11 competitive games in La Liga and the CL (I’m not counting Copa Catalunya, in case you were wondering). Bojan has subbed on for 6 of the 7 league games and 1 of the CL games. In fact, the game against Athletic was the first league game Bojan did not take any part in. I don’t have his total minutes available (I’d love to get my hands on an accurate number because it would help focus this section). During those 6 substitute appearances, Soccernet lists him as having 4 shots on goal and 1 assist. Not exactly monster numbers, but, as many people have pointed out, the stats don’t really point to the energy and movement that Bojan creates while he’s out there. Still, Bojan has taken part in 7 of the 11 games so far (64% — look, no decimals!).
Let’s compare that to some of the other field players out there:
Xavi: 10/11 (91%) [10 starts, 0 subs on]
Abidal: 9/11 (82%) [9 starts, 0 subs on]
Messi: 8/11 (73%) [6 starts, 2 subs on]
Yaya: 7/11 (64%) [5 starts, 2 subs on]
Busquets: 7/11 (64% [5 starts, 2 subs on]
Caceres: 2/11 (18%) [1 start, 1 sub on]
This is a fairly random smattering of players from all over the field (my sample is actually really heavy on midfielders) — I purposefully threw Caceres in order to point out that other players are getting the same treatment as Bojan. Perhaps they are completely different situations, but can anyone really doubt that Caceres is a quality defender? Bojan is a quality striker, but neither he nor Caceres are the finished products yet. It appears to me that Guardiola is using practice time and late game situations to mature them before throwing them to the wolves (it’s a commonly held idea that strikers mature faster than defenders — and also expire faster).
Now, Guardiola obviously uses Pedro and Busquets (especially the latter since the former is injured at the moment, I think) much more frequently, but they are also older than Bojan by a couple of years. Pedro is 21, Busquets is 20. So their temperaments and their abilities are more likely to be solidified than Bojan’s. No doubt practice with Henry, Eto’o, and Messi is helping Bojan to mature without some of the constant pressure he was facing last year. Yes, last year he scored 10 goals in his 31 league appearances and 1 goal in his 9 CL appearances.
If Kevin is right about the team concept that Guardiola is putting in place, it would be foolish to attempt to force his hand in playing Bojan before both of them are ready for that situation. That would disrupt everything that the team has going for it. However, I do not want to see Bojan left on the bench simply for the sake of saving him if he would do a better job on the field than the people who are supplanting him in the rotation. If the score is 5-1 us over Atleti in the 70th minute, why send in Bojan? Why not send in Pedro at that point? When the score is 1-0 us over Athletic, why send in a-just-off-the-DL Hleb instead of a fully fit Bojan?
I can’t really argue with the results, but it’s those situations that make me wonder about Guardiola’s desire to have the kid in the squad. He’s better than Pedro, so he should be higher on the totem pole. For my money, he’s better than Hleb as a left wing forward and certainly has more chemistry at the moment. (And I’m not knocking Hleb, but who can give 100% immediately after an injury? Also, Hleb cannot be construed as a defensive sub or really a tactical one since Bojan would have played in that exact situation)
We’ll see more of Bojan, I’m sure, and while I too hope it’s soon, I think Guardiola has it right in saving him up and not using him up. Save him at the right moments and put him on the field at the right moments. So far, Guardiola has been earning very high marks for his insight into how to tactically change a game and I hope he uses Bojan to do just that throughout this year.
Now, have your say in the comments.

I would contend that in both cases cited, Atleti and Athletic, the situations are very different.
V Atletico, in an open, flowing, lopsided game, it’s a very positive experience for Krkic. He gets to run around and kick up his heels, and contribute to a most excellent team goal. Why not?
But against Athletic, it was clear that no more goals were to come, and Krkic’s skill set wasn’t going to prise any loose, as opposed to Messi’s skill set. And the challenges were coming in hard and heavy. So you put the kid out there, and he runs around, takes some passes and some fouls, for what? Instead, Hleb, with his midfield skills and ball possession style was exactly what was called for in that instance.
I think that both Krkic and Dos Santos were overused last season, to mixed result. Dos Santos got an overinflated view of his worth, and is now playing for a winless Premiership side (but he’s starting, right? Whatever, dude….) Krkic was more sensible, doing the new deal and recognizing what his real value would be right now, until he becomes the man that we all know he will become.
As the old adage goes, “Youth is wasted on the young.” But more to the point, youth is wasted on premature debuts. Krkic is still mostly immense promise. I predict that next year, after another year of seasoning and an off-season regime of training and Wheaties, will the year of The Bojan.
But for right now, I think that Guardiola is doing just fine by the young’un. Ditto for Caceres. You’ll almost certainly see more of the both of them once the Copa starts up full bore. You’ll also see them as part of a rotation that will really come into effect for matches that are relatively meaningless.
Once we put the boot in Basel tomorrow, we will have beaten everyone in the group once, which means that the worst we’ll be able to do, barring a crazy collaspe, is second. So into the knockout stages we go.
The vexing thing about this is that my December Shakhtar match is looking to be completely meaningless, except they might want to put on a good show for the home fans. But I get Valencia, so no worries.
Speaking of Champions League, the only TV spot is going to be via Deportes, 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

I’d like to point out that Kevin means 1:45pm Central Time (CST). It’s at 2:45pm EST.
The game will be re-shown on ESPN Deportes at 9:30pm EST that same night.
Looks like I’ll be catching this game on RadioBarça

I will point out that Deportes is both blessing and curse. Yes, they show every match on every match day. The down side is that they show every match on every match day. Just. Can’t. Stop. Watching….

I don’t think playing time is ever a bad thing for a player. Pressure is the thing that has to be measured.
The Camp Nou faithful are in love with Bojan and it will always be easier to play him at homePosted from

I guess tomorrow i will be wearing my new bright yellow jersey
…I dont want to go into this game over – confidently. but i think that this will be a good opportunity to give some minutes to certain players. I think it would be a good opportunity to give Guddy a run, and maybe give Henry another shot at the center. I think Messi was obviously rested for the game, so Im sure Pep isnt going in overconfidently.
I think id like to see a Toure,Gudjohnssen,Xavi Midfield, with Iniesta, Henry, and Messi up top. maybe caceres and bojan can see some minutes?

Gudjohnsen is out for another couple weeks, Jason, but you’re right. He would also have been good for the Bilbao match in Xavi’s absence.

perhaps iniesta needs a rest, has he not played 100% of all games? i cant think when he missed one. but maybe put bojan in in his place.

I was thinking, wich is rare for me, why does Guardiola not play Bojan as much as Rijkard did? Didn’t he do pretty well for his debut year at only 17 years of age? 10/39 ain’t bad. Ostensively yes, but statistics can be deceiving. Most of those goals were half goals smothered another players fingerprints. Granted being a at the right place at the right time is a valuable “skill”, but Bojan is more future then present. It must be overwhelming to go on to the pitch at 18 and be expected to provide an Eto’o like performance. Guardiola, I think, appreciates he players from the cantera more than most. So after reflection I doubt it’s anything againts the player I thnk he’s polishing him in practice. Regarding Atletico and Athletic,IMHO Atletic was a better time to play Bojan than in Athletic, why? See Kxevins reasons. However I believe that Guadiola would have put Bojan in if those two unfortunate injuries hadn’t happened. And Hleb just had to play be cause the game needed a creative passer. I remind myself of guardiolas own comments in the match againts Betis, in essence, I put Bojan in so the crowd got more envolved in the game. Or something of that sort. Not necessarily because he believed Bojan could win it on his own

What about Keita and Yaya (and Busquets for that matter)? Yaya is obviously better (in attacking AND defending in my opinion). Keita was on the floor 80% of the time last game, he lost the ball many times and got injured by himself. Why not play Yaya instead of him? And Busquets has plenty of time to develop. In important fixtures where you need a big presence in the field Yaya should be Guardiola’s man. (Also if he gets too pissed of he’ll go to Juve, which is bad for all involved.)

I’m with you Hawk. I assume everyone else on this blog is too. Yaya needs to play.
Just if anyone’s interested, I was watching some videos of our youth players, and this Ruben Rochina is pretty damn good:

Well, I think that Yaya should play, but Guardiola also has to find a place for Keita. At present, we have Keita, we know that he’s talented, but we have yet to see how he fits into our system. I think the reason he is getting more time at present than Yaya is that the fit complexities are being worked out.
With both on the pitch for the Bilbao match, there is no question that Yaya was the better player, but that match also suited his skill set. But Guardiola has to find out where the pieces all fit, and Keita is one of those pieces, as are Busquets and Hleb.
The biggest problem for Yaya as regards his playing time is money and his incentivized Nike contract. If he hops from us to Juventus, he’s taking a step down in prestige. He’s also making a move where he becomes (as he is here) a third DM. The difference there is that the other two DMs aren’t getting it done, so Yaya would play more.
But if he wants to leave because he needs the appearances, there’s nothing that the side can do to stop him. Thanks for services rendered, and good luck in your new home. Yaya will play. But he isn’t going to play every minute of every match as he did last season, nor should he. It’s a long season, and if we are seriously going to contest for silver on three fronts (and it seems as if we are), that rotation and talented roster is going to be invaluable in that quest.
I’d rather have fresh, slightly antsy players chomping at the bit than the worn-down and injured from too many minutes players that we had last season.
Guardiola knows what he’s doing. Let’s let him do it.

And of course, now the “Cesc in every pot” bollocks is starting from Rossell, who is bidding to become the Laporta replacement. He’s nattering about Fabregas and Kerrison (Brazilian young’un).
To the club’s credit, they have said in effect if Fabregas wants to come, he can let us know and we’ll bid, but we aren’t going to look the fool, as a certain Evil Empire did this summer past with one Portuguese striker.

juve up 1-0 early on the EE

Kxevin, I would love Cesc to come back to Barca, but like you Txiki both said, we don’t want to mimic the EE, and screw up the rest of our transfer targets because of him. But with Xavi starting to get older (despite him hitting absolutely amazing form, he can’t be perfect forever), Cesc would be a perfect protege.

An eventual transition from Xavi to Cesc would be ideal.
The Yaya-Keita thing should be a lesson to young Bojan. Its a long season– you never know when someone gets hurt and when your team is going to need you to step up. Bojan is a forward/striker and the 4 ahead of him on the depth chart are clearly better suited to be starting. But, he will get his chance and perhaps soon b/c some of them are injury risks.

hey after watching the juve vs EE (EE LOST!! 2-1) i was very impressed with two players in particular. sissoko and amauri. first of all why do they want yaya when they have sissoko, he is just like yaya, big, strong and full of strong lumbering runs. if they take yaya they should give us sissoko in a swap deal plus some cash. secondly, amauri is the business. he would be a perfect replacement for eto’o or henry if they leave. he is also strong and hungry for goals. he is also quite young so he has a bright future ahead. good for juve and their win tonight! it made my day.

and man oh man, did yousee the del piero goal? absolute classic, best goal of the champions league so far.

The EE got it’s ass handed to it. Del Piero’s goal was amazing (he seems to get better as he gets older, just like Di Natalie) and Amauri is a predator. Always on winning the headers and always making space.
