The curtain rises….what will we see? Barca v Numancia, Sunday at noon CT, GolTV
By: Kevin | August 30th, 2008
Numancia is the first lamb to the slaughter. This season is an odd one. Many Blaugrana are saying that the league wants to guarantee another trophy for the Evil Empire by assuring that they play the sides that we play the week before. This holds throughout the season.
The theory is that there are two sides that every other side wants to beat in La Liga: Us and Them. And to beat one, you have to play the game of your life. Which means that when you play the other one, you’re tired and a little wrung out.
So it’s simple. We can’t lose a match this season, including to those white-clad blokes in the Spanish governmental seat. And what better way to start than with fresh meat, Club Deportivo Numancia de Soria. This side is newly promoted, and many are saying that the hope is that they’ve purchased round-trip tickets.
Dunno ’bout that. They were saying that about Wigan in the Premiership, and look what that side did. This year is different. We learned last year that every. last. opponent. has to be taken seriously. We thought, on too many matches last season, that we could show up, unfurl the colors and watch the other side run.
This season is different. The new coach, Josep “Pep” Guardiola, is calling bullshit on that one, and this match will be critical in establishing how the season is going to go. We have to come out and put these guys to the sword right quick like. No screwing around, or playing half the match as we did last season, because everyone will be watching.
The player selection is primo: Valdes, Pinto, Caceres, Alves, Abidal, Puyol, Pique, Marquez, Yaya, Keita, Gudjohnsen, Xavi, Iniesta, Hleb, Messi, Henry, Eto’o, Krkic.
So who the hell starts, right? Here’s how I’m figuring, given the essential quality of a great start:
Valdes, Alves, Puyol, Marquez, Abidal, Yaya, Xavi, Iniesta, Henry, Eto’o, Messi.
That is one serious-ass lineup. Numancia isn’t exactly an offensive powerhouse. Their top scorer, Gorka Brit, talled 8 goals last season. They were 9th place the season before, then kicked out the jams last season to win promotion. It’s worth noting that scoring was well-distributed for them last season. Quite a few guys with 6-8 goals each. They tallied 59 goals in 42 matches, conceding 38 times for an overall record of 22-11-9.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out the side’s plan: leave with what they came in with. A draw. Because they will also be at home, look for Numancia to start the season playing with fire and backbone, to show right away that they deserve to be in the Primera Division.
Ain’t gonna happen. Not against us. I’m figuring a 3-1 final scoreline. I’m giving them a goal because they will be playing out of their minds, will be at home, and will have earned it. It will probably come early, or they’ll have absolutely no chance of scoring.
Our goals will come from Eto’o, Henry and Messi, one each for our dynamic front line.
And that’s what I know.

Who wants a striker that can play with his back to goal???
If we could play the ball into Drogba’s feet, who would hold off a few defenders and get a shot on target.
We are a 1 trick pony. No Plan B.Posted from

terrible. pathetic. atrocious. lazy. i don’t know how else to describe that. why was Messi being played out of position? why didn’t we sign a left winger who does more than stand around, totally uninterested in the ball? why did we wait so long to make changes? the only people who can walk away from this game with any pride are Messi, Yaya, and Alves (who didn’t even have a great game). the subs tried in their own ways, but couldn’t impact. everyone else just stood around like they were stoned.
i really can’t be any more disappointed.

Of all the ascended teams, Numancia have the best chance to stay up and to actually surprise some teams.
They are the Almeria of 2008-2009

First Barca opening loss since 1994!…I’m really afraid to read the Catalan news and blogs tommorow…at least our Isaiah/Kevin team may make “the stank” readable. Time to go play some soccer…fuck this couch potato shit..adios fellow sufferers

the problem isn’t having a big strong striker. the problem is that we are seemingly incapable of doing anything but trying to pass the ball through the 5 or 6 opposing players standing around the top of the box. you’d think that after the 40th fucking time that doesn’t work we’d start working the corners of the box, taking shots from distance, and crossing in from wide. Messi can’t dribble through 4 people and win the game for us every time, something we evidently don’t understand yet.

BA I could agree more! Except the only players that came away clean were puyol and marquez. everyone that had attacking duty was the stank.

Disappointing but let’s not go over the top. Just as I wasn’t excited by the summer signings I’m not really dispirited by this. On another day three or four would have gone in.
However, some of our heroes are on a short leash i reckon. Abidal (still) looks a waste of space in a vital position for width (sorry Kxevin, I know you like him). If our hopes rest on Henry having a great season I’m worried. He’s old and has lost a good yard of pace, although he is still for me one of our cleverer players.
Not convinced by Hleb or Bojan but its a little early to judge either. Thank God for Messi but if he has to create and finish then it will be a long season. Eto’o worked hard, as many did, but isn’t there yet. Likewise, Xavi and Iniesta put in a good shift.
Okay, maybe I am a little dispirited

Yeah, that’s why Pep wanted a center tank able to play with his back to goal, able to fix around him the central defenders and capable of scoring some good header: to win those teams that put the bus in front of the goal. THAT was plan B… And is anybody saying that we don’t need a left winger? Henry did nothing, Bojan and Iniesta did nothing, and almost all the second half all our play came from the right.

But, yes, let’s be patient and let’s give them some more time. Except for Alves, we started with the same team as last season, so the old ways surfaced again. But I think that we played much better (albeit no well enough) in the second half, after the changes. By the way, Deportivo 1, Realissimo (EE) 0, min 28 first half…

The 2 missed chances that made me scream were the Eto’o header that just missed and the Messi free kick off of the post. I’m with the attitude of being patient, but either way you look at it that was a disappointing way to kick things off. Plus the fact we now have to wait two weeks till the next game and get to dwell over this one…

though the early goal was ‘against the run of play,’ the couple of previous counterattacks by numancia showed some serious shakiness in the defense. after 10 minutes, even despite the possession, i could see numancia might score. the defense stank on that play. other than that, we just couldnt finish. we hit the post at least twice and came close, something around 30 shots, but its also true we need to take more shots from distance. if you saw the preseason there is reason for hope, we beat a good fiorentina and boca jr. side and demoished wisla in the first leg. withhold much judgement just for now. see RM lose. liga is very competitive, we all know that.

I don’t think it was the central defense that stank it was the the central mid specially the CDM (yaya) the were just not containing so they got to the defence quick as their running backto goal and with just 2 defending. Sometimes abidal was there as well. Dani did not do good. He had 1 good defensive play in which he got away with a foul. And his attacking passes were inacurate. Henry and Etoo were waiting for the ball to land right between their feet. There was no pass and go no 1-2s. I agree lets be patient. And hope my compatriota Guardado puts the sword to Madrid.

Ahem, Deportivo 1, Realissimo 1, min 4 2nd half (and it had to be Van Nistelrooy… this is my last post about Depor-Realissimo unless the EE loses the match).

My review is up, everyone, and it’s not pretty. But neither was the match.
