not a bad deal. He was going winning nothing with Arsenal.
Comes to Barcelona. sees the sights, enjoys the culture and scenery. Practices everyday to stay in shape. Makes some money.
Picks up a Copa Del Rey, La Liga, and Champions’s League winner’s medals.
Then gets a deal to go to Bayern.
I’ll admit that i have been one of his biggest detractor on this here site, but i do admit that he is a good player, with alot of skill. He just isn’t cut out for the system.
Not to put down Xavi or Iniesta, but i think the fact that Barcelona’s philosophy is hardwired into their mind makes them perfect players for our system, but I suspect it would take them some time to adapt if they hypothetically went to another team.
I think Messi, Xavi and maybe Iniesta have even admitted to passing to an area without even looking up simply because someone was supposed to be there, or make the run.
I wont say that Bojan, Busi or Pedro have superior skill to Hleb, but the fact that they have a better handle on the system obviously gives them an upper hand.
I’m actually really looking forward to seeing a Keita once he really figures our system out. there is potential there.
I don’t think there is hope for Hleb or Guddy though, to be honest.
Oh, and moving on. I trust MOST of what Pep decides, but seriously. Why wont he play Caceres? and i think Pedro! should have been thrown on at minute 60, not 87, or how about RIGHT AFTER Xavi made it 4-1.
I definitely want more Caceres and Pedro! next season.
Also, if we could convince Barca/Nike/Pedro! to add the exclamation point to his jersey, that would kick ass. oh, and while we are taking care of that, we need put “THE YAYA” (in caps) on the pack of Yaya’s jersey.

Hleb has only shown glimpses of what he could do at Arsenal. Seems like he doesn’t like to pass here at Barcelona and when he does, he either mucks it up or the receiving player didn’t understand it and Hleb ends up giving the ball away.
It’s a shame because he’s quite good and he never had that much of a chance to gel with the team.

It’s probably about trust. He thinks that if he makes those subs at the 60th minute, the team will concede 4 goals and there will be nothing he can do about it because Xavi Messi and Eto’o can’t get back in there to win the game.
If the team did concede 4 goals, I wouldn’t have much faith in Hleb and Pedro, either.
Especially after Guardiola has snubbed them for so long.

wow… the rumor mill is spitting out “speculations” faster than i can keep up with.
apparently Carlo Ancelotti wants to start at Chelsea by picking up Adebayor, to replace Drogba who is definitely out thanks to the whole “Fucking-Disgrace” incident of 2009.
Im sure tomorrow “close-source” will confirm either Galliani or Rijkaard as Milan’s new coach. And they’ll speculate over who will take over Roma.

Caceres was not the right man for this game, we needed height and strength at the back because those are Athletics strenghts. Maybe he could have brought him on second half but I think it is only fair to let the players who started finish the game, it is a final, not just any other game. I think that is why you saw Messi play to the final whistle, it is important for a young, hungry player like Messi to be able to play 90 mins of a final….his first club final. I think we will see in the next two league games how much Pep does or does not trust Caceres. Not sure he has much choice, we are pretty limited at the back.
In Pep we trust guys, in Pep we trust. He has brought us this far and he has done it in style, breaking pretty much every record on the way. Treble or not, this has been an unreal season. Next year will be even better.
Be happy guys, it doesnt get much better than this!!!

Looks like the summer transfer press madness has started already:
What a ludicrous transfer this would be. Eto’o PLUS 70 million…..please.

I’m not gonna lie, I would love to exchange Eto’o for Ibra. Not plus 70 million euros, though. For me, Ibra is 5x better than Eto’o, but Eto’o works harder.

Some of you have recently been caught by the spam filter because you’re posting lots of links (videos, streams, etc)…if this happens and you want your post revealed faster than would otherwise happen, please me at barcelona [at] theoffside [dot] com.
That will alert me to what’s going on and I can release your comments so that people can see them. Today I cleared out a couple of comments from about a week ago that were simply sucked up by the spam filter and not even flagged as possible spam (jnice, jordi, and mezez were the ones were affected as far as I can tell). Hopefully I have restored full rights to their accounts — jnice doesn’t seem to have been affected too adversely since he posted just before me…

About Hleb, i do agree that he hasn’t proven much this season and that’s because of the limited amount of minutes given. He was a great player in Arsenal and part of the first team and to see him in reserve at Barca is sad.
I don’t want him to go because i know he plays very well, he isn’t Xavi or Iniesta nor he didn’t grow in La Masia but he has the skills to master our system. He is a great dribbler and great passer; i think he only needs time to adapt.
Henry did a bad season last year, he got 19 goals because Eto’o was away in Africa for some time and there was no other striker with that calibre.Gudy for sure is going to leave, i never understood his role in the squad because he is a forward but plays in midfield?! but still he doesn’t have the distribution skills nor the defense skill to play in the Mid… i dont know. I still want Hleb for 1 more season, he could be a great right hand for Xavi and Iniesta if he gets much more time to play.
cheers!

I’d like for Hleb to work out. He’s got the skills I think to fit into a nice three man rotation w xavi and ghostface that would allow everyone to get rest (esp xavi who’s been a workhorse this year) and stay fresh for the end of the year. it’s gotta be hard for any attcking mid to come in fr elsewhere though… does anyone really expect to displace xavi and iniesta anytime soon?

Eto’o’s touches yesterday were astonishingly bad. His shooting was worse. It says about the role this blog plays in my life that as soon as those instances happened, I thought of Kevin, whom I’ve never met in my entire life.
Anyway, on the Hleb and Gudjohnsen points. I do think Hleb is a bit of a disaster, because he’s neither here nor there. He’s not strong enough to be an enforcer in midfield, not accurate enough with his shots to be a threat on goal, not savvy enough to add value with his passing, and not confident enough to not let all these things get to him. I think Gudjohnsen is in a different mold — I think he has a role to play when our plan A is shut off — but the problem is that Pep has played him so little this year, that his confidence and desire appears to be shot. For my mind, Pep doesn’t make neatly enough substitutions at the 60 minute mark (I would venture to suggest that 70% of Pep’s substitutions are done after 80 mins, though I’d be happy to be proved wrong by the numbers people here).
Anyway, on to Caceres. I think Yaya showed yesterday why Caceres HAS to play in Rome. Yaya provides a driving force in midfield, and if he’s running around trying to mark CR, that’s not going to be available to Barca. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: playing Yaya at CB creates more holes than it plugs.

70 million AND Eto’o? Is that a joke? Is Ibra seriously worth ~130 million? (70 + What Eto’o is worth)
Some of their rumors are just incredibly stupid.

What? No 11s from Sport? Jeez.
The Ibra for 70 million+Eto’o is really funny. Our beloved club isn’t that stupid.
I will also note that kevo is not in fact Kxevin, posting under an alias. But I fully agree on Hleb. As with Henry and Abidal, I think his best (well, that’s a pretty big improvement window, admittedly) is yet to come. He just has to stay with the side, but I just don’t see it happening, frankly.

And thank you Ahsan. It’s also the subliminal bug that slides into your fingers through the keyboard whenever you visit that site, that causes you to think of Isaiah and I. It’s proprietary technology that’s still in Beta test state, but it seems to be working.

I still don’t rate Abidal at all, but there’s much worse options, especially if we have Caceres and/or Puyol to play LB when he gets stupid red cards. Hleb on the other hand was never someone I wanted on this team, and I expect nothing good to come from him

I suppose I think of Hleb this way: we already have him and if we can use him without sacrificing playing time for someone better, let’s keep him. However, if his presence means we don’t bring in someone far better, then he should get the axe.

By the way, what’s up with Xavi and Alves? How come their Free kicks are suddenly about 1,000 times much better?
If Xavi did that in the final against ManU, we have an excellent chance.

Maybe they have been practicing these more recently. I have noticed the last few games both of them are getting better. There was a long stretch where neither of them would even get it on target, let alone trouble the keeper. In the last few games, they have both scored, they have both forced saves and when they do miss the target it seems closer. Hopefully they get it right against Utd because I have a feeling the open, attacking final that most are dreaming of is just a dream. Utd, like the rest of the English teams, fear us too much to risk being hammered in the final. I severely doubt they will play an open game against us, it is far more likely that they will play very compact and try to counter. So, a well taken free kick could be crucial to open the game up and VDS is not the keeper he used to be!

Too bad about Hleb ~ we saw him @ Soldier Field this summer vs Chivas and thought, wow, it’s like Gudjohnsen version 2.0 ~ sorta same, but new & improved. But then he stayed benched, not sure why, and Gudjohnsen got more chances on the field. Now I’ve been rooting for Guddy since he arrived … I missed Larsson but saw that EG has heart and a half and worked like a madman when team stars like Ronaldinho were strolling around the field. But he hasn’t gelled, and what’s worse than Pep not trusting him is the fact that his teammates don’t trust him either. For 2 seasons I’ve seen time after time when EG was wide open begging for the easy pass and the entire side started scanning for another option. When your entire game depends on passing without even looking, you can’t afford a player who doesn’t inspire that confidence, no matter how affable and hard-working. Goodbye, Guddy, I will miss you but as they say, it’s not you, it’s us.
