Preview: Barcelona - Real Zaragoza; Saturday 4pm EST
By: Isaiah | February 14th, 2008
So I know it’s a day early, but the preview for the first of many must-win games is here and I’m leaving town tonight on a mini-vacaton to the west coast. San Francisco and its lack of slushysnowycrap will be a welcome relief to both my immune system and my eyes, which are tiring of seeing the same gritty winter scenes day-in and day out. It does mean, though, that I’m going to miss the Zaragoza match and will probably eschew the review of it too in favor of focusing on the Champions League match on Wednesday.
I know I also avoided doing a review of the Sevilla match, but I decided earlier in the week that my inebriated brain had been unable to process the game in any meaningful way at the time, so my review would merely be a slanted rehashing of my own preview and who wants to read that? I thought the game could have been won — should have been won — but it wasn’t and now we’re 8 points back. Time to move on, time to focus on Zaragoza.
We beat Zaragoza at the Camp Nou in late September, 1-4. Two goals from Messi, one from Iniesta, and one from Rafa Marquez. I would be more than happy with such a scoreline, especially considering that we’ll probably start a very similar lineup. However, Real Zaragoza is a beast at home, as opposed to their awful away record. They’re two entirely different teams; away they’ve only won 1 game, but at home they’ve only lost 1. At home they’ve allowed 15 goals, but they’ve also scored 26. Their record at home is 6W-5D-1L while Barcelona’s away record is 3W-6D-2L (14 goals for, 10 against).
This points towards another draw of the 1-1 variety, to be honest. However, several key components that were missing during the Sevilla game are back from injury and could make a large difference in the proceedings. Toure is back! Toure is back! He’s returned from the African Cup of Nations and should get the start. Puyol could start because of the lack of a right back due to an extension of Zambrotta absence and Oleguer needing surgery on his hand, meaning that either Marquez or Thuram will partner Milito in the back with Abidal out wide.
With Toure back, that allows Xavi and Iniesta to be the midfielders, with Ronaldinho, Messi, and Henry up front. However, because of the knock he received against Sevilla, Henry might start on the bench, giving way for Bojan. That might be the best as Bojan will not overlap Ronaldinho’s positioning — Henry has the ego and skills to think he should be where Ronnie is, whereas Bojan is too young to challenge such a global icon and will listen to the directions given to him rather than thinking on his own (whether or not he should is a completely different question) — and will allow Ronaldinho to have a go at the back line. If he doesn’t, he should be pulled in favor of Guddie with a quickness. Hopefully Messi will not have to fight his way through 4 defenders every time he touches the ball, but that will be based on whether or not Iniesta can fill the middle of the field, allowing Bojan to squirm off into the gaps created by Messi’s runs, thus allowing Messi to either continue his runs or lay the ball off. And with Ronaldinho at the back post and fully capable of dropping a free kick or two into the upper 90, that’s several weapons we’ve been lacking lately. Toure’s return lets us shuffle a little more than we would otherwise be able to, which is fantastic. And that I have full confidence in him is not hurting my current mood.
While Zaragoza will harry us and will certainly be on top of counter-attacking, if Xavi can play for 90 minutes as hard as he’s been playing for 15 these last few games, I think we’ll be able to spread out more and really attack them. No one will have to stay back since we’ll have 4 full time defenders and Abidal running up the wing. Unfortunately we won’t have anyone who can head worth a damn out there, but you gotta love the spirit Abidal puts into his crosses that go straight to 4 defenders with Bojan squashed in between them. Can the kid wear stilts? He’d still be pretty awesome…
Deco, Henry, and Eto’o all look like they’re going to be saved for the Celtic match and I think Toure would be too were it not for the injuries on the backline. Perhaps he will only play 45 minutes, though. This is my lineup prediction: Valdes, Puyol, Thuram, Milito, Abidal, Toure, Xavi, Iniesta, Ronaldinho, Messi, Henry. Again, feel free to replace Henry with Bojan, as is probable.
Here’s some other news to digest:
1. Eto’o thinks that “Henry, Messi, Drogba, and myself would be a superteam”. For what it’s worth, I disagree. Cut out Henry and you’ve got a shot at it, but I don’t like the emergence of a long-ball style team as that which the fans and the players both want. I am fully against it. Barcelona, to me, stands for beauty over brawn.
2. The rumors about Cesc Fabregas coming to Barcelona are still out there, especially now that the Brewster ruling is sending waves through anything and everything that’s related to football. If you haven’t heard of that ruling, you either live under a rock or get all your news from me. Cause this is the first time that I’m mentioning it. For some reason. Anyway, Cesc looks like he’s going to renew with Arsenal, so even if he does want to be Blaugrana, he’ll come at a hefty price. I doubt he’ll have a “lifetime” contract like Casillas and Raul, who just resigned with Madrid until 2017 and 2011, respectively. Weird move, what with injuries happening now and then to players, but that’s how it is, I suppose. And it’s oddly refreshing to see life-long partnerships being made between clubs and players. Even if it is the Evil Empire. Can we do that with Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, and Bojan? Pleeeeease? And then, to one-up RM, we could donate money to charity. (If you say “charity” in front of Calderon, does he wince? Is it like water to the Wicked Witch of the West?).
3. This has nothing to do with soccer, but it’s worth mentioning…The New York Times had a blurb about one of its articles that said “Roger Clemens said that he was talking about his wife’s use of human-growth hormone, not his own.” Right. And Wilt Chamberlain died a virgin. (I’m so multi-sport it makes me sick)
4. There is no 4, only Zuul.
Thank you and see you all on Tuesday when I return from our Western Lands. I heart fog.

There’s something to be said about ‘leaving Las Vegas’. After three days, leaving is the best part of the trip! Kevin, your prediction was correct! My wallet is definitely lighter than it was on Friday! Finding a place to watch the game was almost as difficult as winning for me. I did find a place, but this yahoo for Ohio kept blabbing in my ear the entire game. Good thing I TiVoed the match, I’ll watch it again tomorrow. Then I’ll know what the hell ya’ll are talking about! I didn’t even know the evil empire lost until reading the comments! Hooray!!! Maybe I should go to Vegas more often? No chance in HELL!

Consecutive losses for the Evil Empire. Hmmmm. But let’s not forget, in our joy of having them potentially be out of contention for the double, that Roma won by the same score against Man U last year, then laid a 7-1 stinkbomb at Old Trafford.
Today will be the real test, and the best matches. Thanks to ESPN Deportes and ESPN, I’ll be able to watch them all. Celtic is on record as saying that they’d be crazy to come out and play, but I do expect them to not pack 10 men in the box. Should be an interesting match. It will definitely be close, probably a 1-0 scoreline that might go in either direction. Celtic have a few weapons of their own, particularly off set pieces.
I’d love to see Messi, Henry and Eto’o up front, with Henry in the middle and the other two dive-bombing in from the wings. But we’ll see.

Kevin…I totally agree about not getting too excited with real madrid losing last night…But then I think next match for real madrid and their position will be simply decided by Roma being able tyo score another goal. I think if they would the result will be concluded, I highly doubt real Madrid will be able to score more than 2 in Roma
As for the match up tonight, first off it’s gonna be too exciting, Secondly the Scotish Stadium will be on fire and calmed down with a magnificent run down the right wing by Messi and Ronaldino and finished off with a nice goal by Eto…That is what I anticipate and hope for.
Defense will witness the real full return of the lion Puyol and his 2 bodyguards Milito and Marques passing the ball to deco who will in turn shine tonite.Posted from

I’m back from my vacation and struggling to catch up with work and all the games these days. I was going to write up something about this weekend and the upcoming Celtic match, but I haven’t had the time or energy (damn you red eye flights!) to deal with it.
And watch what you say about Ohioans, Jenny. We are a bunch of amazing people with brilliant ideas and good-looking faces. Except for southern Ohio. That place totally blows.

Kobe Bryant totally stole Toure’s number! But seriously! I will not allow Kobe Bryant to replace Toure!

Aw, come on, no preview? I kid, of course, I know the pain of red eye flights all to well. Checkout my preview on the Celtic Offside and see if I got things right. Celtic will definitely play football and not rugby today, though you should expect Barca to have plenty of possession.

Are you kidding me 2 shots on goal and 2 goals???

Celtic has got to feel pretty fortunate. Still, they’re not going to give away that kind of possession and space and come out on top for 180 minutes.
I think this is the most fluid barca has looked in months, the difference between ‘dinho and Gio is huge. Abidal looks as aggressive as I can remember in the blaugrana also.
Thanks to JT for the suggestion of http://www.channelsurfing.net, that’s the only live streaming app I’ve been able to get going (mac user).

Ronnie looks a million times better than what hes looked this past month.

That’s the Barca supporters have been waiting for. Beautiful passing and ball movement, good runs, aggressive play up the wings, attacking from all angles. This full strength side looks very, very good. If anything, there is an embarrassment of riches with players like Eto’o, Xavi, and Gudjohnson (more embarrassment than riches for Gudie).
The third goal was tough for Celtic, Messi was lucky to have the ball, but you have to credit him for breaking down the defender and finishing well. Messi, Ronnie, and Henry worked well together, they should only get stronger as they get use to each other.
Celtic played the typical, tough, spirited football you’d expect. They played a side they haven’t seen on tape, tough to know what to expect. You have to respect a team that keeps fighting and a crowd that sings all day and night.

Messi for President!

What a match. Messi is a god. There is no doubt about it. Just looking at goal.com’s review- “Barcelona had 75% of the possession in the game, made almost 550 passes to Celtic’s 200, and the only thing that did not reflect it was the scoreline, thanks to Celtic’s two opportunistic goals.” 75% possession??!! That is crazy.

awesome match…
lots to talk about…
*Correct me if I am wrong, Barca were lucky with all the 3 goals we scored, had Celtic cleared the ball correctly, the scoreline would have been different
*Milito was a lil careless I feel, he was out of sorts. got beaten quite often.
*Roonie was just amazing..nice to see him start….
*Deco pisses me off, when he collects unnecessary cards…
*we have scored 3 goals after a long time, and conceded 2 also after a long time. Rijkaard was in the stands. hmmm i hope it was only a coincedence.Posted from

to JC:
well, when barcelona has 75% possession and 25 shots, something is going to go in, whether it is due to celtic “not clearing the ball correctly” or whatever. barcelona were raining down on celtic, so something was bound to happen.
the first goal of celtic, i have to see it again, but it was an amazing run by V of Hesselink to get his head on that ball. i cant fault the barca defense for an amazing play on celtic’s part. the second goal, well that was actually an error of Valdes, not milito. he was too far off the line and got smoked by that looping header. though i wonder if McGeady had his eyes open when it hit his head.
over all, barcas best game of the season, despite the score line. even on the barcelona website — puyol says the same.Posted from

actually i guess it was robson, not mcgeady, that scored that second goal for celtic…with his eyes closed.

To JC: What’s wrong with you…Talking about lucky Barca after such an amazing football display, Lucky with what exactly!???
The first goal…Superb finish from the new elected president, new maradona of football messi aftera beautiful 1,2 cracking down of the defense line
Or is it the awesome goal of henry…No way in hell any keeper would got their hand on it
How about the 3 rd goal which indicates why you never never never leave messi alone
JC …if it was only for the 3 beautiful goals alone I would have argued with u about their performance but 75% possesion of the ball with such a beautiful display of ball passing leaves no place for such an argument
What I loved to see was Ronnie’s performance
This man is back ladies and gentlemen…The Ronnie we all love to watch and a big lesson to Rikkard to see what happens when Ronnie starts…Still I think Rikkard was pissed off deep inside to be proven wrong by Ronnie in front of everybody which made him sub Ronnie with GudholsonPosted from

yeah i agree it was Barca’s best performance, I did say it was an awesome match and yes all the 3 goals were quality goals, but i just felt that, we were handed those goals.

Now, now, let’s settle down kids. I’m writing a review and your comments need to be saved for that so I feel rewarded for all my “hard work”. Obviously I’m joking.
I think I should response, however, to JC’s assertion of luck. I know that others already have, but luck is something that comes up very often and should be discussed. Luck is not a tangible, of course, and luck is not something that can be manufactured (unless it’s by gnomes in a magic tree), but it is certainly a factor in sports. That Barcelona was lucky on their third goal is true, but they were unlucky to have failed to score on 8 or 9 other occasions.
To me, that means that Barcelona were not lucky, but were actually just better than Celtic. That is not taking away from Celtic’s abilities or their drive, but it is true that Barcelona was the best team on earth last night. Dominate, intelligent, creative, and incisive. Hot damn we had a good night.
I also disagree completely that the first two goals had any measure of luck in them. The first was Messi and Deco being Messi and Deco. The second was a masterful wondergoal from Henry. All skill. Not luck. Sure, Celtic were on their collective back foot for the first one, but that doesn’t mean Barcelona didn’t up the tempo immediately following VofH’s goal.
As for Celtic’s goals…ew, what gross defending. Puyol is a little out of his depth on the wing, but his heart definitely very much in it. It’s unfortunate that they scored those goals, but as ballbeave said above, Valdes is to blame for the second goal. Anyway, much more in the review later today.
