Oh, Jnice makes a good point about the Eto’o comments. When have you ever heard a teammate say, while a player was with a side, “He’s crap. Get him out of here.” Or “He’s a toxin. Out with him.” Even when Deco and Ronaldinho were destroying the club from within, guys were saying nice things about Ronaldinho. So I don’t place a lot of faith in what we hear from players. What else would someone with as much class as our guys have, say to the media?

Kxevin:
A) Doesnt want to be on the side… Who said he doesn’t want to be on the side? Has he said so? When? Or is it just your conclusion?
B) Has a dodgy first touch… You may be right on that one, his touch isnt as aesthetic as you guys would want, but what does that have to do with scoring goals? It might be a problem if he wasn’t producing. The dude had 30 goals with that so-called bad touch. Nitpicking are we?
C) Is convinced that the coach doesn’t want him… Is he convinced or wasn’t that a fact at the beginning of last season? So why hate him because of something the coach did? And was Eto’o’s attitude after that negative or was he the ultimate professional in handling that situation?
D) is planning to leave on a free, which is bound to affect his committment to the club…Ok, you got me here. You might be a better psychologist than I can ever be. I don’t know whats in his head, can’t claim to know. All I can say is, he is a professional and he is supposed to carry himself as such. Anything less than that will be detrimental to his own future career.I cant help wondering sometimes, when did it become okay to have soo much dislike for a barcelona player in this space? Look, we should be supporting the TEAM! It’s been interesting to see people salivating over players who cared very little about barcelona’s cause this offseason. It’s cool to discuss positional improvements, team strategies and schemes but not hating on a player who has given soo much to the team. The Eto’o dislike goes beyond what we the fans should be doing. People pick snippets of incidences that have happened over the years and put it together to form their own picture.
The dislike here is soo deep that anyone inside the team who dares to say anything nice about Eto’o is immediately shot down as if they don’t know what they are saying (like we know better). Im sure if Pep came out and said he loves Eto’o tomorrow, some of you guys will say Pep had too much sun over the holiday!
Lets all go easy on this issue and let it play out, ok? The bottom line is WE DONT KNOW! So let the people in the know deal with the situation.

You say we should be supporting the team, but to me, you seem to support Eto’o beyond anything else. The fact is, once Mesalles came out and said whatever he said, half of which were proven to be lies, the situation entered the point of no return. You can’t go calling Laporta a liar, you can’t go talking stuff about Pep’s best friend and most trusted man (Estiarte) and expect stuff to be cool when the season commences. Once that happened, it was clear to me that Eto’o was more interested in causing trouble to the team than staying on it. It may have been his agent who said those words, but he undoubtedly gave his agent the OK and I just don’t think that was a smart move.
I don’t see all that hate you are talking about, Bill. I see people being realistic with the situation and wanting what’s best for the TEAM and at this point, that is acquiring another striker.

felix bro. if goal.com had an IQ, it would be below legally retarded.
lol they wrote ” The Sevilla hitman” for Villa one day
and just now, they have NO OFFER FOR VILLA
and
EXCLUSIVE: VILLA TO BARCA in the same window
logic took a long paid vacation for those “journalists”

Bill seriously chill. I won’t pretend to know what your priorities are but ostensively it seems to be that you prefer to defend Eto’o unwaveringly than actually fully asses the situation. So here are a few questions to ponder about.
If Eto’s stays should he go on a free transfers next season?
If he wants to renew for 4 years 9ml/a year should we comply?
Why did he not want to talk about negotiations earlier on? To not lose focus?
Is it possible that he is more concerned for his financial future than ours? ( hint:they all are )
What’s best for the Club?
If Eto’o does leave who would be a reliable replacement?I think eto’o does want to stay. But only to leave for free next season so he can earn a better signing bonus when he goes to another club. I’m sure he respects the club but in the end he is a “professional”and so he plays for money.
Guardiola is not going to want him and if he stays he is going to be sat. The best for both parties is to either part or for Eto’o to renew his contract at a reasonable price. What Laporta offered him, 2y same salary, is logical and reasonable to me.

i dont think bill is being out of line or needs to chill, he’s just giving his opinion like all of us do.
agents speak for their players, and if the agents say something out of line or their player disagrees, the player normally makes a statement to correct the mistake. eto’o’s silence kinda says it all.
Yaya’s agent got all stupid on us and we gave yaya a raise, thats how it goes. but eto’o is a barca legend, and first the club screwed up by disrespecting him, which probably killed his ego, and now he fires back with his agent taking personal shots.
before that incident with his agent happened, i was all for trying to keep eto’o. he was best for our system, had great chemistry, and was the cheapest way to go. then buy a big striker ala llorente and we were set at the 9.
now since this saga has gone from the point to no return, we have to try to sell him(which wont be easy), buy a quality striker(which wont be easy) and probably lose money in the proccess.
if we could sell him for 25mill and say buy villa for 45mill thats losing 20mill and still not solving our plan b issue.
i wonder if back then if we offered inter eto’o plus 20mill what they would say…probably nothing.
re; sad to see peps place go. i always felt that these 2 places were kinda linked considering a bunch of us went there as well as here. instead of going to all the papers sites i just went to his, and then discussed it here in depth.Posted from

Jnice, I’ve just gotten up and checked my daily websites, which surely includes Pep’s blog and the barca offside (ok, they are actually more than “daily”, I visit them almost hourly…).
In the very first moment, I was shocked. Then, I thought “mmh… maybe there is a sort of April 1st and it’s just a joke” but after I’ve read the first lines of the post, I knew Pep is absolutely serious
And now, I am – just like you and many others I suppose – really sad.
On the other hand, I can understand Pep’s decision, I’ve always been wondering how he could keep up the quality and quantity of his blog, because he put so much work into it. Farewell, Pep.

Kxevin, you’re talking about improving the side, but wouldn’t it best to subscribe to “if it works don’t touch it”? Villa is a good striker, but is he gonna to adapt?. Don’t forget some star players that signed for us: Litmanen, Prosinecki, Hagi, Ronald de Boer, Overmars, Mendieta, Kodro, Bogarde, Dugarry, Petit, Zambrotta, Amunike, even Hleb this year … and how they didn’t fulfill expectations.

we should all wish best of luck to pep, who’s transfer news blog was pretty much required reading. a sad day that he’s gone for all of us wanting news of a higher quality than goal.com and it’s ilk. if you’re a reader, pop over and comment on his last post and let him know how much his hard work was appreciated.

Jnice and Tomatutomate- You will be surprised to hear Eto’o is not even my favorite barca player. Iniesta is my favorite player, followed by Messi, Xavi and then Eto’o.
The problem is that there is soo much accusations here about Eto’o. He is accused on one hand for not speaking out about the issue, but on the other hand he is accused of speaking through Messales. He is accused of not being loyal enough to the team, but on the other hand he is accused of refusing to go.
I find myself reading some stuff here that makes me say, “I don’t want to defend the guy, but this is just wrong”.
Stories come out accusing him of being a problem, but players come out defending him… Like Drew said, agents do what they think is best for their clients, and team representatives do whats best for the team. So, Like I said before and will say it again, we don’t really have all the facts about what is really going on, we can support the club and the player for what he has done for the team. If it doesn’t work, well then, lets wish him luck and shout viva la Villa! But until then, why crucify the guy with all these falsehoods and half truths?

Hmmm
Etoó and villa are about the same age. But Etoó get offered 2 years extention plus the one year left. But according to rumours, if villa comes he gets 4year something length contract .. hmmm
did i get all the facts right …
Bill: no matter what you say, sum ppl here have already made up there mind on etoó and sadly its not sports performens based opition

Etoó scores alot cause he gets good service and forlan who scores alot in a semi team would scoavi, are alot more in barca then etoó with the service he would get.
hahhaahaha thats the funnies i heard in awhile.
it never hits you that Xavi, Iniesta and Messi finds a way to service Etoó cause of his play and movements? That his movements and there creaitivy equals alot of chances and that its a to way street and Forlan plus Xavi dont mean the same amount of chances and therefor
dont mean who ever is nr 9 at barca would score 30 goals a season. We have had world class strikers who aways had players like Xavi and Messi to supply them and they have not been as good as Etoó. Last one was Ronaldo who was out of this world…
So it takes two to tango , or to score a goal

The thing about Eto’o is that he’s good for debate. “Keep him” proponents says the “sell him” folks have their minds made up, and vice versa. But both sides are looking at it from very different perspectives.
It’s like watching the goals compilation video. Some will watch that video and think that Eto’o pace and positioning are brilliant, always putting him in the right spot to capitalize. Others will say he got great service, and just had to knock the ball into the net.
It all depends on where you sit on the matter.
But like Bill, I support the club. Hence my stance that for the club to improve, it can’t do the same thing that it did last year. Eto’o is the one link that can change most easily. Guardiola wants the change, and it’s hard not to trust a guy who did the treble his first season in charge.
So that’s where I sit. The rest will play itself out. Eto’o might leave and his replacement will stink out the planet. I’ll be the first one to call myself a dumbass. Or Eto’o might leave, and his replacement might go pichichi and we do the triplete again. Who knows?
On the larger question of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” that was raised by Mikel, we did that after doing the double and were out in the round of 16 in CL, and didn’t win the Liga, either. Yes, Messi and Eto’o both had significant injuries that season, which certainly affects things, but the fact must be noted.
–On a larger, sadder note, Pep is taking a real-world job, so his fcbtransfers site is no more. As everyone here knows, Pep was the font of news and information, while over here we debated that news and information. The blogs were very complimentary, and I am bummed to see him going.
Real life beckoned for him, just as it does for me. I can’t promise (and I certainly can’t on behalf of Isaiah) that we will step up the news and information side of this blog, but I will do my best. I think that what Pep did was very, very valuable, and it will be missed.

If we fail to get a new striker and Eto’o stays, then hope Keirrison doesn’t go on loan.

From a club standpoint, I’d have to say that Barca messed up with its handling with Etoo. He’s been around for 5-6 years, so you know how he acts, you have had plenty of time to figure out his quirks and how to deal with him peacefully. But currently, due to the timing and the nature of the offer that they’ve given him, they’ve offended the man beyond repair, and have put themselves in a lose-lose position financially, and perhaps even on the pitch – they’re now forced to either let him leave on a free next season, or to sell him at terms that will not be favorable. In addition, with his departure, they will have to buy another striker and as someone else pointed out earlier, still will not have accounted for the plan B break the bus strategy.
If we want to run the math, Barca won’t be able to sell Etoo for more than $30M or so (my suspicion). They already needed one more striker. With his departure, they will need two. They would need one marquee name to replace him (Villa, maybe, for around $40M) plus one more (probably in the $15M range). So we’re looking at around a $50M (and by $ i mean euros). Now let’s say Barca had offered an increased salary, up by a couple of million, instead of same terms for two more years (which is an insult to someone coming off of a career season who still has 3 or 4 more years left). So Eto’o would be looking at a two year extension for $12M/year. Now, for the cost of just an additional $2M per year, they have the flexibility of selling him next year or the year after. If he gets no injuries, he’ll get at least 20 goals, probably more, and he’ll still fetch a decent value, and Barca would still have the financial leverage when looking for a Plan B striker either this year or next year.
So from a financial/strategic standpoint, by showing such little respect for the pride or intelligence of one of their key players, Barca has ended up weakening their financial leverage on the market this year and potentially next year. Karma is a bitch

True, shingai. I think that there was also some good ol’ naivete in thinking that Eto’o would do the “right thing.” But as you correctly noted, that isn’t in his history.
The offer is essentially underscoring the fact that they’d like him to leave. Frankly they’d have been better off making no offer at all.
But as we have all also noted, the club isn’t the only bad guy here. Eto’o could have renewed during the season, when the club made the effort.
As we’ve all said before, both sides screwed up. The only question now is what’s the fallout, and who will be at the head of our attack this coming season?

i dont think bill needs to chill, his comments are a model for debate here: articulate, not flaming, thoughtful. civil debate. i also happen to agree with him.
bill probably would say this, but i will: i reckon people who complain about eto’os missed chances havent played a lot of soccer, or at least havent played striker. many many things can go wrong when you try to score a goal. even the top professionals miss a lot. it’s just the way it is.
30 goals. i’m happy. bills also right that we dont know whats going on behind the scenes, i just hope we have a united, strong squad for next year.

I agree with ooga aga. As a general rule, even when we disagree, we do so with respect and style. ]
I like that. Because at the end of the day, whether someone thinks that Eto’o should stay or go, the club is what it’s all about.

I find kinda funny that people say that eto’o should have scored more this season. People cannot demand that he scores 40 goals in La Liga, that is unreasonable. In the history of the Pichichi trophy, the maximum number of goals in a season is Hugo Sanchez (38 goals)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pichichi_Trophy
If Forlan hadn’t played this year, then Eto’o’s 30 goals would have been the 9th mark in the classification of 80 years of Pichichi Trophy history. Here are the 8 first places:1)Hugo Sanchez 38 (89-90)
2)Baltazar 35 (88-89)
3)Hugo Sanchez 34 (86-87)
4)Zarra 34 (46-47)
5)Ronaldo 34 (96-97)
6)Martin 32 (42-43)
7)Forlan 32 (08-09)
8)Di stefano 31 (56-57)
9)Pizzi 31 (95-96)I’ve always enjoyed the fact that Eto’o was a former player and then through their bad call we landed it, and he scored so many goals against them. It’s like a Laudrup or Figo in reverse. It would be great if he scored in the final of the CL next year at he Bernabeu
