Barca 6-Valencia 0 or “Like unto a peacock.”

By: Kevin | May 4th, 2008

That’s right. Just like a peacock. You heard me. Beautiful plumage, lovely to look at, and what does it mean? Is there satisfaction in having beaten Valencia, the team that took our most realistic chance at silver this season, like a gong? Dunno, but note the “celebration” after Thierry Henry’s second goal, then ask the question again.

Wait. I’ll answer. No.

This match shows the value of attacking versatility. Note that with every serious attack, it was a jailbreak running at Hildebrand. If Messi has the ball, and Henry, Eto’o and Xavi (or Iniesta) are running into the box, even with nine men back it’s tough to cover everyone. More options mean more space mean better passes. That’s what happened today, too freakin’ late to mean anything at all.

Now, that’s not to say that this wasn’t a cool match to watch for so many reasons. But to begin with, the starting lineup: Valdes, Puyol, Thuram (yay!), Abidal, Zambrotta, Marquez, Xavi, Deco, Messi, Eto’o, Henry. Or as I call it, “The Professionals.”

Was this a bit of nostalgia from Rijkaard, giving the vets a last run-out before they are gift-wrapped and shipped off to various places? Dunno, but it sure had that feeling. As one of the match commentators said, there are so many questions coming into the off-season, and that we should “expect this Barcelona squad to answer them with their professionalism in this match.”

And so they did.

Messi was a bright, shining deity who, I think, was reading the comparisons to Ronaldinho and deciding that he would show us. Taking on three defenders, that amazing toe poke that tested Hildebrand, the passes that found teammates and the amazing control. Spectacular. He let it be known, right away, that he was there to play, taking on three Valencia defenders with a lion-like run directly at them. He scored the penalty and I’m sure that you all, like me, were thinking “Okay, here’s where we fall apart.”

But there was something different about this Barca side. Note the purpose to almost every pass, the chasing down on defense, the pressure on Valencia players, the incessant need for the ball, dammit, we want the ball! This was serious stuff. And the purpose in the last third of the pitch was very different, with multiple runners at the goal, so that the attacking player had options.

And look at the attacks and goals. First Messi, then the pass from Henry to Eto’o back to Henry. Last week Eto’o would have tried to beat all four defenders to take the shot himself (as he did in the second half). This time, he laced a fine pass back to Henry. Xavi drills one. The two from Krkic (who also showed why the team should sell Eto’o and not look back) and that second, majestic goal from Henry. That ball must have bent about 90 degrees in the air. Hildebrand was completely fooled, and he’s a really good keeper. Note as well, who the first player was that Krkic hugged after his first goal. It wasn’t only because Henry did the work to prise the ball loose, then set up the attack. There’s something special between those two that almost single-handedly argues for Henry’s continued place on the side next season.

Other players tried to make arguments for their continued place in the side as well. Others seemed resigned to leaving, and just not getting hurt. Henry, with his passes, pace and movement, showed why he should be blaugrana next season. Too bad Thuram has decided to move on, because today was the precise kind of match in which he excels. He and Puyol were shutting down counters all by their lonesome with great position defense.

But make no mistake, we were greatly helped by a Valencia team that didn’t have a ton of interest in this match once they got down 2-0. So we laid on a month’s worth of goals in 90 minutes, for pretty much nothing, unless Villarreal lose. And they didn’t, so we’re just as third place as we were before the day started. Even more so, still four points back with three matches left.

And where was all this movement, this aggression, this purpose all season? It’s easy to play well when nothing is on the line, to ruffle and display the feathers in fine style. Last Wednesday nobody was making those same runs or passing with the same purpose, except for Messi. If we play with the same style and effort against Man U, we’re wondering about the visa complexities of getting to Moscow, and Chelsea is saying “Uh, oh….”

Instead, we’ll be saluting the Evil Empire on Wednesday, before kicking the shit out of them.

And could there have been a more disgusting note when, having stopped the DVR recording of this match to return to live TV, there was Ray Hudson having modifier-drenched orgasms over the Evil Empire, and how great they are. Does he forget that had we played with an ounce of common sense, things would be very different? Yes, they won The Championship Nobody Wanted. And congratulations to them. But still….

And now, player ratings:

Valdes: 4. Didn’t do much, didn’t have to. He almost screwed up the save on that blistering shot from David Villa, though. Whew! If that shot goes in, we see a very different match.
Puyol: 10. Lord, I love this man. He was Messi on defense, omnipresent, with one of those telepathic games he has where he knows the flight of every ball, the planned move of every opposing attacker. He was astounding. Yes, it’s his second 10 of the season, and well-earned.
Thuram: 8. A solid, exquisite professional. Recall the one attack he broke up, then hurdled a player to clear the lines. It’s too bad we couldn’t have gotten our hands on him before he was in ebb tide. What a pro.
Zambrotta: 4. Played reasonably well, but his habit of serving up hospital balls is getting distressing. You can’t serve your best player to the wolves as he did Messi.
Abidal: 6. Man, he’s getting better and better. NOW we’re all starting to see why we signed him. Great pace, and suddenly he’s unruffled when he has the ball. Good foot skills, too, and a nice rapport with Henry.
Marquez: 3. Pretty much invisible. When he tried to insert himself into the match, it didn’t work. Pack your shit, Kaiser. Lucky for you Valencia didn’t make us miss Yaya at all.
Xavi: 7. A very strong match from Xavi. Unspectacular except for the goal, but if you watched him, he was hardly ever in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’ve had bad things to say about him and certainly will again, but man, he is a true professional.
Deco: 5. A lot of good, just as much bad. For every great pass, there was a giveaway or bit of petulance. But damn, the great passes were unreal. The ball to Krkic, the long ball to Messi in the first half. It might almost be worth keeping him around to see how he plays healthy, with a replacement ready if we have to sell him in the winter transfer season. I would argue that we missed a healthy Deco more than that partying Brazilian dude.
Messi: 10. Yes, his first of the season. Has he been better this year? He was everywhere, tracking back on defense, lacing passes, making runs, batting for possession. Don’t worry, everyone. Chelsea would have to offer ownership of the entire club to prise Messi away from us, and even then we’d probably say “Um….that’s okay. But thanks for the offer.” Nobody on the side has a better first touch.
Henry: 8. Yee fuggin’ ha! This is what I’m talking about. He had passes, moves, aggression, defense and style that made it clear why we signed him. But his very subdued reaction to what was a spectacular goal said volumes. Unfortunately, I think he’s outta here. But man, what a goal. He also showed that his whining about being “out of position” is so much festering bullshit. Just move and play, ya wuss.
Eto’o: 3. Lots of running around, a nice rallying point for the team when the ball got bounced off his head. But he consistently flailed, held the ball too long and was too selfish. The announcer noted that a cross (from Henry?) was a bit too long for Eto’o, but he was late with the run. If he’s paying full attention and moves with the strike, he has a free header. I’m done with him.

Substitutes:

Krkic: 7. Tell me the Kid didn’t show why Eto’o is expendable. Note, if you still have the match on a DVR, that when Deco hits the pass, Krkic is watching him, and moves at the footstrike of Deco. It’s a perfect play, and a perfect goal. Same with the Gudjohnsen pass. Granted, not many strikers in the world wouldn’t have buried that one, but the Kid’s movement creates space with its slickness and precision. Yes, Valencia were waving the white flag at that point, but still.
Gudjohnsen: 5. Made one great pass to Krkic, then slipped on the cloak of invisibility. There’s a seat on the plane outta town already reserved for you, sucka.
Edmilson: incomplete. I could have sworn that I saw him come onto the pitch.

I have to disagree with several of your player ratings. Valdes has to get a 5 simply by showing up and having nothing happen. Sure, he “bobbled” that ludicrous drive from Villa, but I can’t name a single keeper on the planet that would have caught it. Except the Team Evil keeper from Shaolin Soccer, of course.

Puyol’s 10 is pretty much right no, but Messi’s is a little above what he was really doing out there. I’d give him an 8 simply because he lost the ball several times by trying to take on 54 guys when the simple pass, which he chose to make most of the time, was obvious.

I have to take umbrage with the Marquez 3 and the Deco 5, though. How many balls made it through to the middle of our defense today? 1 maybe 2? Marquez’s boneheaded yellow obviously reduces his pointage, but a 7 is warranted because he was very Toure-like in his possession of his part of the midfield. And his passes were almost to a one exquisite. Deco was about as good as I’ve seen him this year. I agree with ballbeav’s comment on the preview thread that Deco was back to the real Deco. I’d give him a 7 as well if only for that brilliant through ball to Bojan.

Eto’o’s 3 is unfair too, but not as unfair. He was industrious up front, making the right runs, and got unlucky on what was more a shot than a cross from Henry. Yes, Bojan’s introduction netted 2 goals, but that’s not because Eto’o was so bad, but because Bojan was so good. They were playing different positions and the tactical switch by Rijkaard allowed more space for Bojan than the previous tactic, with Eto’o jamming the middle and getting double marked, allowed for the Cameroonian. I noted early in the match that Eto’o was clearing tons of space for his fellow players through the middle by drawing both central defenders together and letting Deco and Messi have the run of the center of the attacking third. He was unlucky to not get on the scoresheet if you ask me, but that was Valencia’s whole plan, to stop Eto’o. And they did. They just didn’t stop anyone else because we finally woke up from our slumbers and put a hurtin’ on a team that wasn’t willing to challenge us in midfield.

Edmilson was decent enough and actually contributed more to the attack than Marquez did, so I’d have to give him a 5 just for showing up. Bojan definitely deserves an 8 for his incisiveness while you’re spot on with your Guddie review.

As for Henry, he had a good game, but how many chances did he create? He had one put away on an Eto’o pass that my mother probably would have put away and then one gorgeous golazazazazazo that wasn’t actually that genius of a play at all except that it went in and I cheered loudly for el cuarto. That he was able to score a miraculous goal is not suggestive of him suddenly becoming the player we all thought he would be. While I wouldn’t poo-poo his leaving, I do think he should stay because continuity is important. But if it comes down to Eto’o or Henry, I’m so squarely in the Eto’o camp it’s not funny. Balls to the idea that Henry will help Bojan develop more because, despite that probably being true, Bojan is already fantastic.

I think today was a hollow victory, I mean after all it was Valencia and their suitcase of troubles. Not much work had to be done, no offense to either team.

Despite the game not really helping us in the standings or winning us silverware, I had a lot of fun watching it. Most likely because this game actually had GOALS. Eto’o made me cringe a couple times, specifically when he ran down the left side of the box and tried to take on fucking 5 defenders and rattling off a useless shot. Just pass dude. Deco played so much better, but if I remember correctly he took another stupid yellow? (big surprise) Let’s hope we can have a similar showing on Wed in Madrid.

ps. Ray Hudson is pretty much the James Lipton of football commentary. That guy blows so much fucking smoke up peoples asses holy shit. I used to actually like his commentary but it’s really getting on my nerves lately.

I, sir, think the fact that you’re in the Eto’o camp so firmly speaks volumes. And believe it or not, Krkic isn’t perfect. Far from it. He needs to learn about all the little defender tricks and how to deal with them, the tricks that strikers can use to combat them and create spaces of their own inside the box. That’s the value of a veteran player. Krkic isn’t anywhere near the player he’s going to be. He’ll need help to get there. He is very good right now, but a far sight from fantastic.

Eto’o made the right run a couple of times, but mostly he was the same Eto’o. That’s neither fish nor fowl, just the guy we’ve come to know. And I think that he ran into packs of Valencia defenders more than they were actually game planning to stop him. :D

Balls didn’t get through the middle of our defense because a) Valencia weren’t trying all that hard and b) Puyol was playing up a lot in support of the mids, since Xavi was so busy.

For the record, I start from zero and work my way up. A player gets bupkus for showing up. He has to work for a rating. I know that some folks start at 10 and work their way down, but not for me. It explains why those guys over at Goal.com are usually so far off.

Conversely for Messi, you have to award points for intangibles. If he doesn’t come out roaring the way that he did, the game doesn’t go the same way. We probably dither and dither, let Valencia gain confidence, then put the knife in. Messi let it be known that he wasn’t going to be into any nonsense on the pitch today. He actually deserved the captain’s band more than Puyol (as brilliant as he was) today, which is scary.

He infected everyone with his drive and energy. Aside from Puyol, no other player was everywhere on the pitch. Henry was close. That first Krkic goal was all Henry’s for example, from defense to making the correct pass. That’s crazy good. Can he play like that all the time? Hell, no.

And please remember that Eto’o created about as many chances as Henry did. Henry isn’t a playmaker, he’s a striker, one who was as free to roam the front line as Eto’o was. The difference today was that Henry did more with his freedom. Strikers convert chances. They don’t create them. Henry is the only player on the side who could have scored that second goal of his. Actually, that isn’t true….Ronaldinho, if he weren’t so busy closing Barcelona night spots, could have made that same shot. But that’s it.

Ultimately, Jenny is right. It was an empty victory against a team with precious little to play for. If we play like that on Wednesday, then guys can stick their chests out. It’s why Henry and Messi played so hard, but weren’t all that celebratory. They knew better, and could see it in the faces and demeanor of the Valencia players. Hell, I could, so I know that they could.

As I said above. No glory, no satisfaction. The satisfaction would be if we had done this all season against every lower-table team that we faced. We didn’t, so we’re third-place, and likely to stay there.

You guys are right, it was an empty victory. Everytime we scored, I wud say, what’s the use now???
Eto and deco are suspended for El Clasico. That’s gonna suck!!!
Deco pisses me off, he’s too inconsistent. He makes me curse him for picking up another yellow card and all, and then makes me praise him for that glorious pass to Bojan..Damn you Deco!!!

A bigger problem, JC, is no Iniesta, who wants to sit the rest of the year to be ready for Euro 2008. So we have to trot Gudjohnsen’s half-dead ass out there in place of Deco, unless there’s some other mid out there I don’t know about.

We have strikers, so Eto’o I can live with. Deco hurts more because of the absence of Iniesta.

after messi scored. He make a gesture. He held his hand on his nose and moved it away and to his nose, as if to potray pinocchio. Any idea what he meant? was he trying to say that the reports in the papers about his mega move are all lies??

Toure will travel to Madrid, so that’s good.

the Dr. also says Ronaldinho is properly following his recuperation plan, but that he has doubts if he will be able to play any minutes in the last 3 games.

Yup Milito fudged up his knee ligaments.

I noticed that Messi nose action too. I thought he might be dedicating the goal to someone with a big schnoz, because he pointed after the gesture. I dont know who it would be.

I was wondering about that “nose” gesture, as well. There have been some pretty funky goal fetes this season, from the Valdes tribute in which Henry pulled his shorts up to his breastbone, to Messi’s nose pull.

Wednesday has me really worried. To lose to the EE twice in the same season. But the roster is worrisome indeed. We are without: Milito, Toure, Iniesta, Deco and Eto’o. Thuram can come in for Milito, and Krkic for Eto’o. But we have no replacements for Toure, Iniesta and Deco.

I don’t like this one bit.

Oh, and more posturing on the Party Boy front. Galliani says the move to AC Milan is “dead.” Which probably means “Barca, you want to get rid of him, we know you want to get rid of him, so bring that price down and we can talk.”
