Barcelona Stats

Some quick tables, updated to reflect the weekend’s action:

Green = Champions League; Gray = UEFA Cup; Orange: relegation zone.
And now Barcelona’s individual stats:

Discussion of all this after the jump.

Two Champions League spots have already been assured: Barcelona and Real Madrid. Sevilla and Valencia need 1 and 3 points respectively over the next 3 games in order to assure themselves of at least Champions League qualifier spots. Real Zaragoza would need a minor miracle to get into the CL (Valencia losing all 3 of their games while Zaragoza wins all 3) while Atlético Madrid mathematically assured themselves of a UEFA Cup spot at best by losing to Barcelona on Sunday, they also made it easier for those below them to surpass them over the final trio of games. They are 1 point above Villareal, 2 above Getafe, and 4 above Recreativo Huelva. All three have, at the moment, realistic chances of topping Atlético, if not 5th placed Zaragoza, who are 5 points up on Villareal.

Real Sociedad has surged of late and are 1 point below Athletic Bilbao, battling hard to stay up. Celta don’t look like they’ll make it out of the zone, but you never know as they’re only 4 points from saftey. The only team assured of relegation at this point is Nastic, which will go down and be replaced, along with 2 other TBA teams, by Valladolid, Almeria, and Murcia are all three already assured of top 3 finishes in Segunda A. My favorite Segunda team, Xerez, is a distance 4th with no shot of making up the 14 point difference by the end of the season. I used to play with as them in FIFA 2006. I took them to the Champions League without buying any big names. I’m awesome.

I’d prefer to see Athletic Bilbao stay up, if only so that the streak continues (they’re the only team to have never left the first division in the history of professional Spanish football). Still, Real Sociedad are going to make them work for it and it would sort of be a shame if Levante went down instead of either of those clubs. It could and probably will come down to the Athletic Bilbao - Levante game to end the season, which could be a pretty serious game if it’s down to the wire like I think it will be. Real Sociedad have to visit the Mestalla on the last day and that just sucks for them, but they can hope that Valencia have nothing left to play for by then.

More discussion of the remaining games for the top 3 games throughout the week.
