Big Deals, donuts and other craziness

By: Kevin | July 18th, 2009

Random bits n’ nits:

Watched Fox Soccer Report last night, and as part of the cable footy program’s report on the Barca/Inter deal, they quoted a club official to the effect of if the deal doesn’t happen, Eto’o would be a “big part” of the club’s plans this season.

As Spider-Man had his Spidey Sense, Baby Kxevin has his Bullshit Sense, and it’s tingling with such fervor that I have to sit down for a minute.

Why?

How could the club’s plans possibly be any bigger than last year, when everybody and their mamas were feeding him balls? Does that mean that he also becomes the pilot for the team jet and will design the travel suits? Comments such as that only make sense if they are considered to be verbal blandshments toward a striker who needs to feel loved, so that he can make a decision that will help the deal go through.

EMD is believing that Eto’o is going to mess this thing up by demanding a key to the city, naming rights to the San Siro and about 485 million Euros per season.

I’m not that kind of a pessimist. Eto’o gets a great squad, a great coach and a side that is still the championship favorite and a Champions League contender. More importantly, he gets to be The Man, which will make him very happy. If the Laporta comments are to be believed, it isn’t about the money for Eto’o.

Hleb’s approval is the easy part of that deal. If he says no, we stuff him in a sack and send him to Milan.

–Which brings me to my next bit, and Baby Kxevin as the voice of reason here, in suggesting that this deal could leave us worse off. If this was indeed going to be Hleb’s year, the one in which he provided effective cover and rest for our midfield dudes, his departure would seem to leave a hole that is going to need filling.

Even if the omnipresent Poulsen rumors should come to fruition, we will still need cover for Xavi and Iniesta. Xavi didn’t show the effects of playing almost every match for the club, except in a run of funky play. I believe that Iniesta showed the effects of the heavy minutes in his tendency to get injured. And we’ve all seen the Ghostface frolicking images. He hasn’t been hitting the gym in the off-season.

So unless we are one wrong foot-plant away from being a side with a hole in the middle, we need a midfielder, and I don’t mean tomorrow. Could something magical happen with one of the kids who will be brought along on the London tour? Possible, but doubtful. Then again, who among us foresaw Busquets last season?

–Now, the Big Deal could be double-dog good for us. Sport is saying that Inter will use some of the proceeds from our transaction to buy Xabi Alonso from under the flared nostrils of the EE, as they will be able to meet his extravagant valuation, something the EE can’t do because they ain’t got no dough right now, pending the Great Dutch Fire Sale.

–Finally, Villa has said to Llorente, “I’m staying.” Now. Does that mean if Laporta came calling with a suitcase full of 50m Euros that he wouldn’t say “Whoops! I meant staying in the departure lounge, waiting for that flight to Barcelona.” Dunno. But there will be a joint press conference next week, in which Villa will almost certainly say that he was doing it to help the club that he loves so much, and that has done so much for him, and that is STILL some 500m in debt.

PS Ramzi, I think you mean:
Eto’ plus Cash MINUS Hleb = Cost of the deal .

We’re not giving Hleb away. He is a separate deal which will result in some sort of income. Also, I love how Marca values Eto’o at 35 mill and Hleb at 7.5 mill AND our cash payment at 45 mill (the most upper guess) to conclude that he is worth 87.5 mill. Guys, with Eto in his last year and given the circumstances he is NOT worth 35 mill. If we get 7.5 for Hleb, I’ll do back flips.

Lol nice one Ramzi, but you’re gonna need to pry Cesc away from Arsene Wenger’s unusually well lotioned dead hands with the jaws of life and six mexican virgins or 50 mil if you want to take the easy route.

One thng I still dont understand in this Marca calculation (regardless of the validity of their numbers):

Hleb will move to Inter for loan right?

So if after one year Inter bought him for 7.5 m, which means that barcelona will GET money, laporta will count the millions and put them in the drawer.

How does it happen that we add the 7.5 M to ibra cost?

well, I don’t expect Eto’o to declare publicly that he is not happy to stay here because of his contract, but I can understand that when a player doesn’t renew his contract he is either unhappy with the squad or the payment.
I can’t hate a player that grabbed two CL titles by the balls to the club, and one that is the 3rd highest ever scorer in this club’s more than 100 years history, but what I care about is who is starting the next season as a striker, he is not renewing so he is not playing, and he is leaving for free, and then we will need to pay either Villa 50 millions or Ibrahimovc 80 in cash. we can use Eto’o this summer to get Ibrahimovic for 40. I wish Eto’o stayed and renewed but he is not doing so, what I think of right now is the squad of the next year and our position the next summer trying to buy a top striker without having enough funds to do so. I was hoping before this summer that the club would offer him his pay rise, but that didn’t happen, either because the technical board is so stupid to know the real value of Eto’o or because they are overrating his substitute, but I really don’t care as a supporter, because I check the schedule and it is already 18/7 and the forward situation is not solved, be it because of Eto’o or because of the board is irrelevant now really, what is best for me as a supporter is Eto’o sold and a replacement bought. again it might not be Eto’o’s fault but I really don’t care. let bygones be bygones.

Can Eto’o play with his back to the goal? No. Can Villa? Little bit. Can Ibra? Amazingly.

Pep wants a forward pivot. It’s as clear as daylight. Shouldn’t we even give him a chance to try his system after this sort of first year?

According to this webpage, Ibrahimovic attacked with scissors a fellow Egyptian player in the dressing room whilst at Ajax, and people call Eto’o conflictive:

Marca doesn’t really mind making us look hypocrites even if it meant that they look fools.
remember a couple of weeks ago when they published that Guardiola is going to leave next summer (after Laporta’s departure)because he is not happy with the way Laporta is dealing with signings, then we discovered that Laporta is actually trying to grant Guardiola his first wish when appointed.
by the way I believe in Pep because in his first year as a coach he installed a certain philosophy and applied it to the maximum leading to unprecedented success. but if he’d failed last season you’d have found me hear cursing him for selling Ronaldinho and Deco, as you see, I do reserve the right to call them dummies if it doesn’t all work out. Wenger on the other hand has been feeding us shit since the dawn of time. but I did trust in him before that.

    @Ramzi: :D

The Fabregas thing certainly won’t go away. I just think he’s too spendy for what we’re going to be capable of if this deal happens.

I can’t even think of midfielders out there who are sufficiently capable. Once you assume that Xavi is, right now, irreplacable, what you hope for is someone who can approximate that level. It’s why I wasn’t that geeked about Diego. He strikes me as more of an Iniesta type, rather than that all-seeing, calm, midfield facilitator.

Crap! I keep thinking of Hleb’s skill set, minus the tension and brain cramping. What’s wrong with me?

And as a matter of official record, we here at the Barca Offside love us some Krkic, for sure. But as a winger, unless they’ve been feeding him steroids/Wheaties in the off season. When Iniesta is ready to slide into that Xavi role, Krkic will be ready to be our Iniesta (or Henry).

    How ’bout that?

Ibrahimovic can play with his back to the ground. and if he must stab someone in the dressing room he can do that to Yaya as he won’t even notice. imagine one line up that has both of them on the field. TERROR.

eklavya, I am indeed saving chocolate for later. Rock.

As yet another aside, there are few things funnier than a French baker howling with mirth at the word “doughnut,” when I explained to her what we call her brioche back home. Cracked me up.

I don’t understand this idea that Ibra is kind of target man just because he’s tall. He is alright in the air, but he’s a player who likes the ball on the ground the overwhelming majority of the time. His height has obvious advantages, but he isn’t Drogba. He is much more of a second striker than Eto’o was, and will have to continue to score like he did last season to be what we need. Not having to create on his own should help, but as far as I’m concerned Ibra is a huge wild card. An amazing player no doubt, but I’m not so sure this makes Barcelona better.

The Caceres for Poulsen link is just overall horrible. Poulsen had a worse season than Caceres did, got more chances, and doesn’t have the legitimate excuse of being so young. To dump Caceres to bring in another unproven young defender is bad business, the kid showed plenty of promise and we shouldn’t throw away our future like that when you consider Puyol and Marquez aren’t going to be around forever.

Nolan, no one consider Ibra as new RVN as a target man. yet, is he taller than Eto’o? YES. Can he head the ball better? YES. Thank you.

AFAIK, the Keirrison deal is still on. He is still expected to join the club, something that still intrigues me, given as how Guardiola is said to not like him as a player. Is it that often that players are purchased over the wishes of the coach?

There are of course downsides to taking creatine and one of them is that it will make you retain water within your muscles. What does this means? It means that you need to drink more water if you want to have a prayer of compensating for that water being kept within your muscles rather than the other organs in your body.

For those who are saying that barca won’t get 7 million for hleb, i must remind you, that real madrid just sold a castilla defender that was nearing the end of his contract, not wanted by the tea and on the verge of being released for 3.5 million.
