Champions League Draw: It’s Celtic!
By: Isaiah | December 22nd, 2007There should be no doubt whatsoever that Barcelona got a break in the Champions League round of 16 draw. Celtic may be a good club, but they are no Arsenal, Liverpool, or Roma. They are probably better than Rangers this year, but not by much, so I think it’s safe to say we can expect two victories from the squad. An away draw is okay as long as we score a goal or two (preferably the latter, of course), but Celtic doesn’t tend to play the same way as Rangers does: anti-football. Sure they’ll pack the box and try to hit Barca on the counter, but they’re generally more spread out and willing to run with the big boys. They’ve played well in the CL in recent years, including some games against ManU last year and Milan this year, but I just don’t think they have the class to hang with an upper-tier team like Barca who have something to prove this time around.
I’m glad we didn’t get Liverpool because they’re boring, but I’ll admit I was rooting for a game against Arsenal or Roma simply because those would have been tremendously exciting games. For now I’ll have to content myself with rooting for Roma to destroy the Evil Empire…which we’re going to do this weekend! Yay!

dont follow the scottish league too much nor do I watch many Celtic Champions league matches, so its good to hear that they dont tend to play anti-football. I can understand teams stacking the box against us, because it is stupid not to, but Rangers was pathetic. Very happy with the draw.

Banks, even in your dreams 6-0 could never happen.
Jake, I’m generally impressed with Celtic’s willingness to try and be one of the big boys by playing with them. Nakamura is a class player and will be dangerous on free-kicks, Vennegoor of Hesselink is a good striker and will pose problems in the air, but I just don’t think the Celtic defense can handle Barca. Messi will be back by then and we’ll be lights out, I think.
I’m pleased with the draw, but I think we’re going to face the winner of the Milan-Arsenal match, which could prove tough. I’m hoping for Arsenal because that would be a beautiful set of games.
